Updated guidance for UK licence holders
Linz Car Hire Guide for Travellers from the United Kingdom
Linz is a convenient base for exploring Upper Austria, the Danube Valley and the Salzkammergut, especially if you plan to visit smaller towns, lakes or rural attractions where public transport can be slower or infrequent. Hiring a car can save time and give you flexibility for day trips, but city-centre driving can be affected by traffic at peak times and parking costs. For UK travellers, driving is straightforward once you adjust to driving on the right; most hire cars are manual, while automatics are available but typically cost more and should be booked early. Expect a security deposit on a credit card, and check whether winter equipment (when required) is included in the price. On Austrian motorways you may need a vignette (toll sticker) depending on where you drive; many rental fleets include it, but you should confirm at pick-up. Fuel policies are commonly ‘full-to-full’, which is usually best value if you refuel near the return location.

Linz Airport (LNZ) Car Rental Centre
Best for quick getaways and late arrivals. Rental desks are typically in or near the terminal with cars a short walk away. Pros: longest opening hours, easiest pickup if you are flying into Linz, good choice for one-way trips. Cons: airport surcharges may apply and queues can be longer at busy flight times. Navigation tip: follow terminal signs for ‘Car Rental/Mietwagen’ after arrivals; allow extra time for paperwork and vehicle inspection.
Linz Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station) Area
A practical option if you arrive by rail from Vienna, Salzburg or Munich. Pros: convenient without needing an airport transfer, often good for short city stays before heading out. Cons: traffic can be heavy around peak commuting times and parking nearby may be limited; opening hours can be shorter than at the airport.
City Centre (Landstraße / Hauptplatz) Pick-up Points
Suitable if you are staying centrally and only need a car for a day trip or onward travel. Pros: walkable from many hotels and attractions, avoids an airport detour. Cons: limited vehicle choice, more constrained collection/return access, and you may need to factor in pedestrian areas and restricted access streets when navigating.

Linz's old town has tight medieval lanes and notoriously scarce parking, especially during festival weeks. A small hatchback slips easily through narrow streets, tucks into compact bays, and keeps fuel costs low for short hops between the riverside cafés, museums, and the Danube cycle path.

Day trips to Hallstatt, the Salzkammergut lakes and the Dachstein ice caves demand real grip on twisting alpine roads. An SUV handles snow in winter, climbs steep mountain passes with confidence, and offers a generous boot for hiking boots, ski gear, and bulky family luggage.

Summer is ideal for the Wachau Valley's vineyard terraces, the Danube cycle path and breezy lakeside lunches. A convertible lets you soak up sweeping views between Melk and Linz, then settles into comfortable cruising on smooth Austrian motorways when the roof goes back up at speed.

Why Pick Up at Linz Airport (LNZ)

Ideal if you want to start driving straight after landing, need extended opening hours, or want the widest choice of vehicles and add-ons (child seats, additional drivers, winter kit options). It is also often the simplest place to arrange one-way rentals or cross-border travel permissions (where allowed), as staff are used to flight-linked schedules.

Linz Car Hire & Driving FAQ

Vignettes, parking rules, winter tyres and what UK drivers must know before driving in Upper Austria

Do I need a motorway vignette when driving out of Linz, and how do I buy one?
Yes. The A1 (Westautobahn), A7 (Mühlkreis) and the new A26 Linzer Autobahn all require a valid digital vignette (Digitale Vignette) tied to your number plate. A 10-day pass costs €9.90, two months €29.00 and the annual sticker €103.18 (2025 prices). Buy online at asfinag.at, at any ÖMV, BP or Shell pump, or at tobacco shops (Trafik). Your UK rental car uses a vehicle-specific vignette registered to the plate — keep the printout or app confirmation in the glovebox; spot checks are common 5–10 km inside the border.
Can I drive in Austria with my UK photocard licence, or do I need an IDP?
Yes, your valid UK photocard licence is sufficient for short tourist stays in Austria — no International Driving Permit is currently required. Carry the photocard and, if your licence was issued before 2015, the paper counterpart as well. Most rental firms in Linz set a minimum age of 21; drivers under 25 pay a "young driver surcharge" of roughly €10–€25 per day, and large vehicles (9-seaters, premium SUVs) usually require you to be 25 or even 30.
Are winter tyres or snow chains compulsory around Linz, and when?
Winter tyres (M+S marking, minimum 3 mm tread) are mandatory in wintry road conditions between 1 November and 15 April, anywhere in Austria. In Linz city itself roads are usually cleared within hours, but the moment you head north into the Mühlviertel or south towards the Salzkammergut the rule is enforced: fines up to €5,000 plus an impound fee if you block traffic. Snow chains (Sommerreifen only allowed with chains) must be carried for alpine drives and fitted where you see the green chain-icon sign.
How does parking work in central Linz, and what are the fines?
Most of the inner city (Landstraße, Hauptplatz, Pfarrplatz, the Danube riverbank) is a Kurzparkzone — paid 09:00–19:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00–13:00 Saturday. Buy a Parkschein at the ticket machines (around €0.30–€2.40 per 30 min) or use the Handyparken, Parkster or EasyPark app. Free parking is almost impossible in the Altstadt — use the P+R at Hauptbahnhof, Urfahr or solarCity and hop on the tram (single €2.80). No ticket or expired ticket: €30–€70 fine; clamp or tow-away: €200+ plus daily storage charges.
What petrol does a hire car in Linz take, and is full-to-full enforced?
Austrian pumps are self-service and clearly labelled: Super 95 (RON 95, the equivalent of UK regular unleaded — fine for almost every car), Super Plus 98 (RON 98 premium) and Diesel. There is no longer any leaded petrol. Diesel nozzles are black/green, petrol is white — never confuse them, as misfuelling is a €300+ recovery charge. UK supermarket fuel cards and the Fuel & Go discount schemes are not accepted, so pay with the rental company's card, your own credit card, Visa/Maestro contactless or cash. Return the car with the same fuel level you collected it; otherwise expect a refuelling mark-up of €3–€4 per litre.
