Compare airport and downtown car hire in Luxor with a practical UK-focused guide to insurance, fuel policies and fees—so you can book confidently and drive on your own schedule.

UK Traveller Essentials
Luxor Car Hire Guide for Travellers from the United Kingdom
Hiring a car in Luxor is a convenient way to explore at your own pace—useful for early starts at the West Bank (Valley of the Kings) or for day trips where taxis add up. Expect right-hand traffic (unlike the UK), variable lane discipline and occasional police checkpoints; keep your passport/ID and rental documents handy. Automatics can be limited, so booking ahead helps. Check what your price includes (CDW, theft protection, mileage), understand the deposit policy, and confirm the fuel rule (full-to-full is usually the simplest). Take time to photograph the car at pickup and return, and ask about tolls, additional driver fees and cross-governorate travel rules if you plan longer drives.

Luxor International Airport (LXR) – Arrivals Car Hire Desks
Most renters collect here for the quickest start. Follow signs from arrivals to the car hire desks or meet-and-greet point stated on your voucher. Pros: best flight-aligned convenience, typically broader vehicle choice and easier late arrivals. Cons: possible airport surcharges and busier handovers—inspect the vehicle carefully and confirm where returns are accepted.
Luxor City Centre (Corniche/Nile Front Area)
Convenient for hotels along the Nile and travellers who want to settle in before driving. Pros: easier to inspect the car in daylight and avoid airport add-ons. Cons: limited parking and heavier local traffic at peak times; confirm exact meeting point and opening hours.
Luxor Railway Station Area
Practical if you arrive by train from Cairo/Aswan and want to collect nearby. Pros: central access and good for multi-modal itineraries. Cons: congestion around the station and short-stay stopping rules; allow extra time for pickup and ensure the branch has your booked car class available.

A small saloon copes well with narrow lanes near Luxor Temple and slips into tight parking at Karnak. Air conditioning is fitted as standard, vital under the Upper Egyptian sun. Light steering and modest running costs suit short hops between riverside sites. Low fuel use keeps daily costs sensible for temple-hopping in town.

An SUV handles dusty west-bank tracks with confidence, where tarmac occasionally gives way to gravel. Powerful air conditioning copes with 40°C afternoons, while raised clearance clears rough access roads. Higher seating offers better desert views. The boot easily swallows cool boxes, water and sun shades for long days out.

A people-carrier keeps groups comfortable on longer drives to Dendera, Abydos and Edfu. Three rows of seats give everyone space, and the large boot swallows suitcases, day bags and souvenirs. Climate control reaches every row, important for passengers unused to desert heat. Refined engines cope well with motorway cruising south along the Nile.

Luxor Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers to common questions about hiring and driving a car in Luxor, Egypt

Can I drive in Luxor with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is accepted for tourist rentals in Luxor and across Egypt, provided it has been held for at least one year and you are 25 or over. An International Driving Permit (1968 convention) is strongly recommended as a backup, since some police checkpoints along the Luxor–Aswan road or at the airport still ask to see one. The paper counterpart is no longer issued in the UK, so the IDP serves that role. You will also need your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name for the EGP 3,000–5,000 pre-authorisation hold.
How bad is the road from Luxor airport into town, and is it safe to drive at night?
The 7 km Corniche road from Luxor International into the city centre is fully tarmacked, lit and generally safe to drive in daylight. After dark, avoid driving outside the city limits and the desert side roads leading to the Valley of the Kings or Dendera, where potholes, unmarked speed humps and stray donkey carts are common and street lighting is poor. Police checkpoints on the east bank are routine; keep your passport, licence and rental paperwork on the front seat. Drive on the right, treat every junction as a potential stand-off, and expect journey times to be roughly 30–40% longer than Google suggests.
What fuel do rental cars in Luxor use, and will the car come with a full tank?
Almost every rental car in Luxor runs on petrol (mogaz, 92 or 95 octane), as diesel is reserved for commercial vehicles. Bookings operate on a full-to-full policy, so inspect the gauge at collection and photograph it. Petrol stations are plentiful on the Corniche, but the nearest 24-hour pump to the airport is the Total on Airport Road, about 4 km out. Fill up 2 km before you return the car; the station closest to Luxor airport is often closed after 22:00, and a refuelling service charge of EGP 250–400 plus the missing fuel will be deducted if you hand it back empty.
Is the Luxor–Hurghada or Luxor–Aswan desert road safe to self-drive?
The east-bank Luxor–Aswan road (3.5–4 hours, 210 km) is a sealed, well-patrolled highway and is the only one we would recommend for self-drive visitors. The longer Luxor–Hurghada route crosses open desert and is only suitable for confident drivers in a 4x4 with at least two spare tyres, as there is no fuel or phone signal for the last 120 km. Checkpoints are frequent; carry water, your passport and at least EGP 1,000 in cash. Avoid driving after sunset on any desert road, and never overtake the convoys of tour buses that run between the two banks.
Will I be stung by hidden extras when I collect the car at Luxor airport?
Yes, the most common complaints from British visitors are the cross-border insurance waiver fee (EGP 800–1,200 if you plan to drive to Hurghada or Sharm), a young-driver surcharge of EGP 250 per day for under-25s, and a so-called ‘administrative fee’ of EGP 500 for traffic fines processed after you leave. Decline CDW upgrades from desk staff pushing the full tank pre-purchase; it is always 15–20% cheaper at the pump. Take dated, geo-tagged photos of every panel and the tyres on collection, and pay the deposit on a credit card so you can dispute any unfair deductions.
