UK Traveller Guide
Málaga Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Málaga is one of the easiest ways to explore the Costa del Sol and Andalucía beyond the city—think Nerja, Ronda, Mijas, Frigiliana and Granada (day trip). For travellers from the United Kingdom, the main advantages are flexibility and often better overall value for families or groups compared with multiple train/bus tickets. Málaga’s road network connects quickly to the A-7/AP-7 coastal routes and the A-45 inland. Keep in mind that city-centre driving can be busy, parking is limited in some neighbourhoods, and some central streets have access restrictions; many visitors prefer collecting at Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport for convenience, then returning at the airport or a city branch depending on their itinerary.

Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) – Car Rental Centre
Most popular pickup point for UK travellers. Follow signs for “Rent a Car/Car Hire” in the arrivals area; the rental desks and/or shuttle directions are clearly signposted. Allow extra time at peak hours for queues, inspection and deposit authorisation. Ideal if you want to head straight to the coast or inland without navigating central traffic first.
Málaga María Zambrano (VIALIA) Train Station Area
Pros: convenient if arriving by rail, generally easier road access than the old town, and good for one-way trips. Cons: availability can be lower than the airport in peak season, and parking/vehicle collection can be slower at busy times.
Málaga City Centre (Old Town/Soho Edge)
Pros: handy if you are staying centrally and only need a car for a few days. Cons: narrow streets, heavy traffic at times, paid parking and possible low-emission/access restrictions; picking up here can be more stressful than the airport.

Why Pick Up at Málaga Airport (AGP)

Airport pickup typically offers the widest choice of vehicle sizes and transmission types, longer opening hours, and stronger price competition—especially when booking in advance from the UK. It also saves a return trip into the city if your first stop is the coast or inland Andalucía, and it can be simpler for early/late flights.

Malaga Car Hire: UK Driver FAQs

Practical answers on licences, tolls, speed cameras, parking and age fees for British drivers on the Costa del Sol

Will my UK driving licence work in Malaga, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You need both. Since Brexit, UK licence holders must carry a valid 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their UK photocard licence when driving in Spain. Order one from the AA or RAC before you fly — it costs £5.50 and arrives within days. You must drive on the right. Drive without the IDP and a Guardia Civil checkpoint can fine you €200 on the spot. The licence and IDP must stay with you for the whole trip.
How strict are speed cameras around Malaga really?
Brutally strict. Spain uses fixed Gatso cameras, section-control (average speed over 5–10 km) and mobile units, especially along the A-7 coast road and AP-7 motorway. Limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways. Fines start at €100 and double once you exceed 20 km/h over. Your rental firm receives the notice, adds a €30–€50 admin fee and charges the card on file. Going 30 km/h over can trigger a €400+ fine and a court summons for residents.
Is the AP-7 motorway around Malaga free, or will I be billed afterwards?
It depends on the direction. The AP-7 between Malaga and Algeciras has been free since 2019, but the AP-7 west towards Marbella, Estepona and Gibraltar is still tolled. A Malaga-to-Estepona run costs roughly €5–€7. There are no booths — it's free-flow with overhead cameras, so your rental company receives the charge and bills your card 30–60 days later plus a €4–€8 handling fee. Cash is no use. The free A-7 parallel road is slower but dodges the toll.
Where can I actually park in central Malaga without getting a ticket or a clamp?
Stick to the blue-zone (Zona Azul) street bays and pay at the meter (coins) or via the SITYP app. Rates run €0.40–€1.50 per hour, parking is free 14:00–16:00 and after 20:00, and Sundays are free citywide. Yellow kerbs are loading only, white kerbs are residents only — clamp risk is real. Underground car parks near Calle Marqués de Larios charge €18–€25 a day; the Alameda Principal multi-storey is central and well signed. Avoid streets around the Picasso Museum — pedestrianised, €200 fine to enter.
I'm 21 — what's the real cost to rent a car in Malaga?
Most major firms (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) add a young-driver surcharge of €15–€25 a day on top of the rental for ages 21–24. Minimum rental age is usually 21, though Sixt will rent to 19-year-olds with an even steeper fee. Drivers over 70 may face an older-driver premium. Goldcar, Record Go and Centauro often bundle the surcharge into headline prices or waive it for over-25s, so compare carefully. Book online direct — counter staff at Malaga Airport are notorious for pushing full insurance at €15–€30 a day you may not need.
