UK Traveller Essentials
Car Hire In Milos: Locations, Pros & Cons, And What UK Drivers Should Know
Milos is an island best enjoyed with your own wheels: public transport is limited and timetables can be seasonal, while many coves and viewpoints are easiest to reach by car. For UK travellers, driving is straightforward (Greece drives on the right), but roads can be narrow, hilly and windy—especially outside the port area. Booking early is wise in July–September when availability tightens. Expect a security deposit on most hires and check what your cover includes: Collision Damage Waiver often comes with an excess, and extra protection may reduce that excess but won’t cover everything (for example, damage to tyres, glass, underbody or keys may be limited). Read the fuel policy—‘full to full’ is usually simplest—and photograph the car at pick‑up and return to avoid disputes. If you’re staying in Adamas (the port) or plan day trips across the island (Sarakiniko, Pollonia, Plaka, Firiplaka), a small car is usually sufficient, while higher‑clearance vehicles can be helpful on rougher tracks where permitted by your rental agreement.

Milos Airport (MLO) – Arrival Area/Car Park Collection
The main air gateway to Milos. Pick‑up here suits short breaks and late arrivals, letting you drive directly to Adamas (port) or your hotel. Advantages: quickest start after landing, easy luggage handling, and clear meeting points. Disadvantages: limited on‑site inventory compared with cities, possible higher peak‑season pricing, and restricted opening hours depending on flight schedules—confirm after‑hours procedures if needed.
Adamas (Adamantas) – Port & Seafront Area
Best for ferry arrivals and for travellers staying near the harbour. Advantages: walkable from many accommodations, easy to combine with ferry schedules, and often multiple providers nearby for quick comparisons. Disadvantages: traffic and parking can be busy in high season, and some offices keep shorter opening hours outside peak periods.
Plaka – Hilltop Town Area
Handy if you’re based in the island’s traditional capital and prefer to avoid the port crowds. Advantages: convenient for exploring central Milos and nearby villages, and calmer surroundings. Disadvantages: steeper streets and tighter parking; not ideal if you have lots of luggage or need immediate access after ferry arrival.

Some of Milos' best-kept secrets, such as Tsigrado, Gerakas and the cliffside tracks near Kalogeros, sit down rough, rutted lanes where a regular hatchback would simply bottom out. An SUV with higher ground clearance handles loose gravel and steep gradients confidently. Four-wheel-drive also offers peace of mind on dusty summer tracks.

Hiring a Car in Milos: Essential FAQs

Straight answers on licences, dirt tracks, petrol stops and insurance for British drivers exploring this Cycladic island.

Can I drive in Milos with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard is legally accepted in Greece for visits up to six months, so technically no IDP is required post-Brexit. In practice, many local hire desks in Adamas still ask for a 1949 IDP (£5.50 from the Post Office) and a few have turned away customers without one in peak August. Bring the photocard, the paper counterpart if you still have it, your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name — deposits run €300–€800 pre-authorisation. Minimum age is usually 21, with a young driver surcharge of €5–€8 per day for under-25s and a one-year licence-held minimum.
Are Milos roads safe? What about the dirt tracks to Sarakiniko and Kleftiko?
The main loop linking Adamas, Plaka, Pollonia and Provatas is tarmacked and manageable in a small hatchback, but it's narrow, winding and shared with quads, scooters and tour buses. The moment you turn off for beaches like Sarakiniko, Tsigrado, Firiplaka or the Kleftiko viewpoint at Kipos, expect rough single-track dirt roads with potholes, loose gravel and steep drops. Most hire contracts forbid unsealed roads, voiding the CDW the moment you puncture a tyre or scrape the underside. For the wilder southern beaches book a 4x4 or quad bike from the outset, or take a boat tour instead.
Where can I refuel on Milos, and will I get stranded on empty?
Petrol is sold in only two areas: a cluster of stations in Adamas (the port town) and one near Triovasalos by Plaka. All open roughly 07:30–20:00 and most shut on Sunday afternoons. There is absolutely nothing in the south or east of the island, so always set off with at least half a tank for Paliochori, Provatas or the Kleftiko trailhead. Expect €1.95–€2.15 per litre of unleaded in summer — about 30% more than mainland Greece. Hire firms require the car back at the same fuel level shown at pick-up; missing petrol is recharged at roughly double pump price plus a refuelling fee.
Is parking a nightmare in Milos, and do I have to pay?
Good news: public parking across Milos is entirely free — there are no meters, paid car parks or resident-only zones anywhere on the island. The catch is space. Plaka village is closed to cars, so you must park on the approach road and walk up. Adamas waterfront fills by 10:00, while Sarakiniko's dirt car park overflows by 11:00 in July and August; arrive before 09:30 or after 17:00. Never block a driveway, fire hydrant or bus turning circle — local police do issue €80+ fines, and on an island of 5,000 residents they will spot your hire car's sticker within minutes.
Is the basic insurance enough, or will I get stung for damage at drop-off?
The standard CDW included in the daily rate typically leaves an excess of €600–€1,500 and explicitly excludes tyres, wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and any damage on unsealed roads — which rules out most beach access on Milos. Add roughly €8–€12 per day for the desk's full "zero excess" cover, or buy a standalone excess policy from a UK provider like iCarhireinsurance or Questor (£3–£5 a day) before flying. Critically, photograph every panel, both bumpers, all four wheels and the underbody at pick-up, then email the timestamped pictures to yourself. Dust-coated cars hide existing scratches that conveniently reappear on your invoice.
Should I pre-book online or just turn up at Adamas port? What about the airport?
Pre-book online, full stop. Walking up in July or August almost guarantees every desk is sold out, with the few remaining cars priced at €55–€80 per day versus €28–€40 booked ahead. Most firms have kiosks 100 metres from Adamas port and will meet your ferry from Piraeus, Pollonia or Sifnos — just email your vessel name and arrival time 24 hours in advance. The tiny Milos airport (MLO) handles only a handful of Olympic flights from Athens and has just one rental desk, so collecting in Adamas is usually more practical. Allow 20 minutes for paperwork and the all-important damage walk-around.
