Car Hire In Mount Isa, Australia: Competitive Prices, Clear Pickup Options

Compare great-value car hire from Mount Isa Airport or town, with a practical UK-friendly guide to insurance, fuel policies, fees and driving tips for the outback.

UK Traveller Essentials
Mount Isa Car Hire Rental Guide
Hiring a car in Mount Isa is one of the easiest ways to get around North West Queensland, especially if you’re visiting mines, outback viewpoints or nearby national parks. Public transport is limited and taxis can be scarce at peak times, so a rental car gives you flexibility with early starts, day trips and luggage. For travellers from the United Kingdom, note that Australia drives on the left (like the UK), but distances are long and services can be far apart—plan fuel stops and carry water. Availability can be tighter during local events or busy work periods, so booking ahead usually secures better prices and vehicle choice.

Mount Isa Airport (ISA) – Terminal Car Hire
Best for quick arrivals and departures. Car hire desks are typically located within the terminal area; collect your keys, then follow signs to the airport car park for vehicle pickup. After-hours collections may be possible by prior arrangement (fees can apply). Pros: maximum convenience, simple navigation, good for late flights. Cons: airport surcharges may apply, queues can occur when flights land, limited vehicle choice if you walk up.
Mount Isa CBD / Camooweal Street Area
Convenient if you’re staying in central Mount Isa or arriving by coach. Pros: can be cheaper than airport pickup, easier to access local shops for supplies before heading out. Cons: shorter opening hours, you may need a taxi/transfer from the airport, and weekend availability can be limited.
Barkly Highway (Town Fringe) Depots
Useful if you’re heading straight out of town towards regional roads. Pros: easier vehicle pickup/return with simpler parking and road access, often suitable for larger vehicles. Cons: less walkable from hotels, may require a lift or taxi, and fewer nearby amenities if you need last-minute items.

Hiring a Car in Mount Isa

Outback road, fuel, weather and rental advice for UK self-drivers heading to Mount Isa

Is my UK driving licence valid in Mount Isa, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your full UK photocard driving licence is valid for the entire length of your visit — no International Driving Permit is required because the document is printed in English. You must carry the original card (not a photocopy) at all times and present it, together with your passport, when you collect the car. The rental company will also want a credit card in the main driver's name and may ask to see a return or onward flight ticket. Holders of the old paper-only licence issued before 1998 should still bring an IDP in case the counter agent is uncertain — it costs about £5.50 from the AA or RAC and is postage-friendly.
How far is it between fuel stations, and could I actually run out of petrol?
Around Mount Isa, the gap between bowsers is genuinely huge. On the Barkly Highway west to the NT border, the Landsborough Highway east to Cloncurry, and the Capricorn Highway south to Longreach, you can drive 250–350 km between fuel stops. Always start every leg with a full tank, refuel whenever you see a station rather than waiting for the gauge to drop, and carry a 20 L jerry can of unleaded as a backup. Diesel is available almost everywhere; premium 95/98 unleaded is patchier, and unmanned roadhouses often close after 6 pm.
When are kangaroos most likely to jump in front of the car, and what should I do?
The danger window is the two hours after sunset and the hour before sunrise, when kangaroos, cattle and emus come onto the bitumen to feed. Outside Mount Isa the default limit is 100–110 km/h, but you must slow to 60–80 km/h where you see the yellow kangaroo-zone signs. If an animal jumps out, brake hard in a straight line and never swerve — on outback roads with a 1–2 m soft shoulder, swerving causes roll-overs far more often than the impact itself would. Bull-bar and radiator damage is rarely covered by basic insurance.
Will roads out of Mount Isa be closed during the wet season (November to March)?
Yes, several key routes close for days at a time. The Diamantina Developmental Road south to Bedourie and Birdsville, the Burke Development Road to Normanton, and side tracks such as the Donohue and Mayne Roads can all be shut by floodwater, sometimes for a week. Always check the QLDTraffic website or app, the RACQ road-conditions report and the Bureau of Meteorology forecast before each departure, and build at least one spare day into your itinerary. Most rental contracts deem driving into a flood zone a breach of policy, which voids your damage cover.
Does my rental cover unsealed outback roads, or will I have to pay extra?
Most major suppliers at Mount Isa Airport — Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Sixt — only cover sealed roads on the standard rate. The Gregory Highway north to Burketown, the Savannah Way, and most access tracks to mines, gorges and station stays are unsealed. To drive them you must buy the Outback or Unsealed-Roads excess reduction, which adds A$15–25 per day but reduces the damage excess from A$6,000+ to zero. Without it, a single stone chip, bull-bar dent or tyre blow-out is entirely your bill, and towing from a remote track can run into four figures.
I'm 23 — will I be hit with a young-driver surcharge, and how much?
Yes — almost every supplier at Mount Isa Airport (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Sixt) adds a young-driver fee of A$20–35 per day for drivers aged 21–24, charged on top of the base rate at the counter. Drivers under 21 are generally refused outright. The fee is not always included in online prepaid quotes, so always read the extras or fees tab before you book. Some suppliers also cap the maximum rental age at 75. If two of you are over 25, adding them as a second driver is usually free and removes the surcharge for the younger one.
