Updated Travel Guide
Muscat Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Muscat is one of the easiest ways to get around, especially if you plan to visit beaches, wadis or mountain roads where taxis can become costly and public transport may be limited. For UK travellers, driving is generally straightforward: Oman drives on the right, roads in Muscat are modern and well signed, and most visitors adapt quickly. Expect roundabouts, variable lane discipline and speed cameras. Always carry your driving licence and passport/ID, check your rental agreement for cross-border restrictions, and consider a larger vehicle if you will head to Jebel Akhdar or remote areas. Airport pick-up tends to offer the widest choice and longer opening hours, while city locations can be calmer and sometimes cheaper for longer hires.

Muscat International Airport (MCT) Car Rental Centre
The main hub for car hire in Muscat. Most major brands operate here, typically in or near the arrivals area with cars collected from dedicated airport parking. Ideal for late arrivals, one-way plans, and quick access to Route 1 towards the city and coastal areas. Pros: widest vehicle choice and extended hours. Cons: can be busier, with stricter checks on deposits and fuel.
Al Khuwair (Commercial Area)
A convenient city pick-up zone near business districts and embassies, often with easier parking than central Muttrah. Pros: good for longer stays and weekday collection. Cons: traffic can build at peak commuting times; opening hours may be shorter than the airport.
Qurum (Near Shatti Al Qurum)
Popular for beachside hotels and dining, making it practical for travellers staying along the coast. Pros: close to many hotels and attractions; less hectic than the airport. Cons: limited fleet at smaller branches; parking and U-turns can be awkward on busy roads.

Oman's mountain roads to Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams legally require 4WD vehicles, with steep gradients and unsealed gravel tracks beyond the asphalt. An SUV handles loose surfaces with confidence, while raised ground clearance protects the underbody on rocky wadi crossings. Air-conditioned comfort also helps during transitions between altitude and lowland heat.

For trips into the Wahiba Sands or remote wadis around Sur, a pickup truck offers serious payload for camping kit, jerry cans and recovery gear. Its sturdy chassis and high clearance handle soft dunes and rocky tracks better than most SUVs. Ideal for British travellers planning multi-day desert expeditions during the cooler winter months.

Muscat's modern motorways, the scenic Muttrah Corniche and the smooth coastal route towards Bandar Khayran are perfectly suited to a medium saloon. Fuel-efficient and easy to park near the Royal Opera House or Old Souq, it offers solid air-conditioning for hot afternoons and enough boot space for a couple's week-long Omani break.

Muscat Car Hire & Driving: 5 Key Questions

Practical answers for UK drivers on licences, right-hand driving, speed cameras, wadi safety and fuel costs in Oman

Can I use my UK driving licence in Oman, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard driving licence is accepted for tourists in Oman without an International Driving Permit (IDP). In practice, however, the major rental desks at Muscat International Airport (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget, Thrifty) often ask to see an IDP anyway. A 1968-convention IDP costs just £5.50 from the AA and removes any risk of a refused handover. Carry the physical licence and the IDP together at all times—Royal Oman Police conduct frequent roadside checks, particularly on the Batinah coast and Nizwa roads. Most firms set the minimum age at 21, with a surcharge of 3-5 OMR per day for drivers under 25.
I've never driven on the right-hand side of the road—what's the biggest adjustment in Muscat?
The single biggest danger for British drivers in Muscat is the muscle-memory flip from left-side to right-side driving. Before you leave the airport, spend 20-30 minutes in the multi-storey car park finding the offset pedals, the indicator stalk (now on the right) and the wing-mirror blind spots. Muscat is full of large multi-lane roundabouts—give way to traffic already on the roundabout, which now comes from your right, and stay in the outer lane until you know your exit. Indicator and wiper stalks are reversed from UK cars, so expect a few accidental full-beam flashes on day one.
How strict are speed cameras in Oman, and how much are the fines?
Speed enforcement in Oman is strict, automated and unforgiving. Fixed GATSO-style cameras and unmarked police vehicles operate on every main route—the M-way between Muscat and Nizwa, the Batinah highway to Sohar, and the Sur coastal road. The default motorway limit is 120 km/h, dropping to 100 km/h on dual carriageways and 60-80 km/h in urban areas. Fines range from 10 OMR (£20) for marginal speeding to 300 OMR (£610) for serious excess, and are debited automatically from the rental company's card pre-authorisation—you cannot pay at the roadside. Check the Royal Oman Police app for any tickets before returning the car.
Do I really need a 4WD for the desert and mountains, and what about wadi crossings?
If you're planning Wahiba Sands, Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams or any wadi route, a proper 4WD is non-negotiable—and most rental firms refuse to insure 2WD vehicles for these areas. Wadis (dry riverbeds) can flash-flood within minutes of distant rain between November and March; never cross a flowing wadi and check the Omani Met Office before setting off. Off-road damage—sand in the air filter, underbody scrapes, sidewall punctures—is excluded from standard CDW policies, so always take the full coverage. The Jebel Akhdar summit road closes after heavy rain and is barred to non-4WD traffic year-round.
What do fuel and tolls cost in Oman—is there a Salik-style system?
There are no toll roads in Oman—no Salik, no Dartford-style crossings, no bridge fees—just fill up and drive. Petrol (Mogas 95) costs roughly 0.24 OMR per litre (about 48p), around a third of UK prices, and there are well-stocked stations every 50-80 km on the Muscat-Sohar, Muscat-Nizwa and Muscat-Sur corridors. Most rental desks run a full-to-full policy; photograph the dashboard mileage and the pump reading at handover and again at return to dispute any unfair refuelling charge. Diesel is also widely available for SUV and 4WD bookings.
