Compare competitive prices and use this practical UK-focused guide to choose the right pick-up location, understand insurance, and avoid common fees while driving the island.

UK Traveller Essentials
Mykonos Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Mykonos is one of the easiest ways to reach quieter beaches, inland villages and viewpoints on your own schedule—especially if you’re staying outside Mykonos Town or travelling as a couple/family. The island is compact, but taxis can be limited and buses focus on popular routes and times. Expect narrow roads, strong winds and busy summer traffic; choose a small car for easier parking and tight lanes. For UK drivers, you’ll drive on the right in Greece and will typically need a full UK driving licence; many suppliers also require a credit card for the deposit. Consider insurance carefully (excess levels can be high), check the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually simplest), and photograph the vehicle at pick-up and return to avoid disputes.

Mykonos International Airport (JMK) – Arrivals Area
Most visitors collect near the terminal on arrival. Counters may be inside the arrivals hall or meet-and-greet just outside; vehicles are typically in a nearby car park. Advantages: quick pick-up after landing, widest choice in peak season, easier if you have luggage or an early ferry connection. Disadvantages: queues at busy times, slightly higher prices than town, stricter deposit/credit-card checks, and limited space for detailed handovers when it’s crowded.
Mykonos Town (Chora) – Near Old Port & Town Centre
Convenient if you’re staying in town and don’t want a car every day. Advantages: can be cheaper than airport, easier to compare a few local offices on foot, good for short hires. Disadvantages: traffic restrictions and very limited parking in peak months, narrow streets not suited to large cars, and you may need to walk from your accommodation to the pick-up point with bags.
Mykonos New Port (Tourlos) – Ferry/Cruise Area
Popular for travellers arriving by ferry from Athens or nearby islands. Advantages: collect straight after docking, useful for one-way plans across the island, avoids returning to town first. Disadvantages: limited fleet compared with the airport, prices can rise around ferry arrival peaks, and pick-up may involve a short transfer depending on the operator’s parking arrangements.

Navigating Mykonos Town's famously narrow lanes and hunting for parking near Little Venice becomes a breeze in a compact hatchback. Tight corners, scooters weaving past and crowded summer squares demand a small footprint. Easier to manoeuvre, cheaper to fuel and stress-free for first-time island drivers during peak season.

Reaching secluded coves such as Fokos, Mersini and the wild northern coastline often means tackling unpaved tracks and dusty lanes beyond Ano Mera. A small SUV offers the extra ground clearance and boot space for beach kit, while still coping comfortably with the island's busier central roads.

Fast Start From Mykonos Airport (JMK)

Airport pick-up is ideal if you want to get on the road straight after landing. You’ll usually find longer opening hours, a broader choice of vehicles (including automatics and larger cars), and simpler logistics for luggage. In peak season, booking ahead can help secure better rates and reduce the risk of limited availability.

Mykonos Driving & Car Hire FAQs

Honest, practical answers for UK visitors hiring a car or quad on the island

Do UK drivers need an International Driving Permit for Mykonos?
Yes — post-Brexit, UK travellers need both their photocard licence AND a 1968-style IDP (paper booklet, £5.50 from the Post Office). The IDP must accompany your UK licence at all times. Hire companies can refuse to release the vehicle without it, and roadside police checks can mean a €200 fine. Apply at least 5 working days ahead if ordering by post.
Is a quad bike really better than a car on Mykonos?
For most visitors, yes. Roads between villages like Ano Mera and Kalafati are narrow, twisting and often single-track, and quad bikes are the island's default transport. A 125–300cc quad costs €35–60/day versus €60–120 for a small car, and parking in Chora is far easier. Downsides: quads are banned on main arterials in peak months, helmets are compulsory, and they are unsafe in strong Meltemi winds (July–August).
How bad is parking in Mykonos Town, really?
Bad, and expensive from June to September. Free roadside spaces near the windmills are gone by 10am; guarded lots charge €5–10 in the morning and €15–20 by evening in August. Use the signed municipal car parks at the Old Port or near the Delos ferry terminal, or hunt for white-painted bays on the ring road. Never park on yellow lines or in disabled bays — fines start at €80 and tow-away fees reach €150.
What are the speed limits and the biggest road-rule traps?
Standard Greek limits apply: 50km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h on open roads. Drive on the right, overtake on the left, give way to vehicles already on a roundabout. Fixed cameras operate on the Airport–Chora stretch. The biggest trap is the drink-drive limit of 0.5g/l — about one small beer for a 70kg adult, stricter than the old UK rule, and summer weekend checkpoints are common.
Can I take the hire car on a ferry to Santorini or Naxos?
Yes, but plan ahead. Most Mykonos operators (Hertz, Avis, and locals such as Mykonos Drive) allow ferry drop-offs for a €50–150 one-way fee and require you to show ferry tickets at collection. Blue Star and Seajets carry vehicles, but spaces sell out 48 hours ahead in July–August. Check the small print — some budget suppliers prohibit leaving the island entirely.
What are the age limits and young-driver surcharges?
Minimum age is typically 21 for small cars and 23–25 for larger or automatic vehicles; most suppliers cap drivers at 70–75. Under-25s pay a young-driver surcharge of €7–15 per day. UK drivers over 70 should carry a recent medical certificate — some agencies request it even though Greek law does not. A second named driver costs €3–8/day, always declare them to keep the insurance valid.
