Naxos Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And How To Choose
Hiring a car in Naxos is one of the easiest ways to see more than Naxos Town and the main beaches. Public buses are useful on popular routes, but services can be seasonal and less frequent for inland villages and remote coves. With a car, you can set your own pace for spots such as Halki, Filoti, Apeiranthos, Mount Zas trailheads and west-coast beaches. Expect narrow lanes, tight parking in peak summer, and short but steep or winding sections inland. UK drivers should remember Greece drives on the right, and most hire cars are manual unless you specifically book automatic.

Naxos Airport (JNX) Arrivals
Most convenient pickup for flights from Athens. Desks are typically in or near the small arrivals area, with vehicles parked just outside. Ideal if you want to start exploring immediately, but choice can be limited at peak times, so booking ahead is recommended.
Naxos Town (Chora) Port Area
Pros: handy if you arrive by ferry; walkable access from many hotels; often flexible for same-day ferry schedules. Cons: traffic and parking can be busy around sailing times; collection may require a short walk to the vehicle depending on the supplier.
Naxos Town Centre (Old Town/Castro Fringe)
Pros: convenient for central accommodation; easy to compare multiple local agencies on foot. Cons: narrow streets and restricted access zones can make pickup/return less straightforward; you may need to meet staff at a nearby car park.

Naxos enjoys long, sun-drenched summers with temperatures often above 30°C, making a convertible ideal for breezy coastal drives. Open-top motoring suits the relaxed Cycladic pace and offers stunning sea views along routes to Agios Prokopios and Plaka Beach. UK travellers particularly enjoy convertibles for the Mediterranean experience.

Naxos's interior features steep mountain roads leading to traditional villages like Apeiranthos and the summit of Mount Zas, the Cyclades' highest peak. An SUV provides the higher ground clearance needed for rougher gravel tracks and winding climbs. Its strong stability also handles the island's occasional rough patches with real confidence.

Narrow Streets, Easy Parking

Naxos Town, also called Chora, features the narrow, winding lanes typical of Cycladic settlements, where parking can prove tricky during peak summer season. A small car slips easily through tight village streets in Halki and Filoti. It also keeps fuel costs pleasantly low for budget-minded British travellers on extended island stays.

Pick Up At Naxos Airport (JNX) For A Fast Start

Best for travellers flying in and wanting immediate mobility. Airport pickup minimises transfers, can suit late arrivals, and makes it simple to head straight to your accommodation or the west-coast beaches. Availability is limited on the island in high season, so booking early helps secure the car size and transmission you want.

Naxos Car Hire FAQs: UK Traveller Guide

Practical answers on licences, mountain roads, parking and petrol for self-driving around Naxos island

Can I drive in Naxos with just my UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You legally need both. Since Brexit, the Greek authorities require UK licence holders to carry a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit alongside the photocard. The 1968 version is not accepted. Buy the paper IDP from a Post Office before flying (£5.50) and keep both documents on you — hire desks can refuse the keys without the IDP, and police checks on rural roads are not unheard of in summer.
What is the minimum age to hire a car on Naxos, and how much is the young driver surcharge?
Most agencies (Hertz, Sixt, local firms such as Naxos Rent A Car and AutoTour) set the minimum at 21 for small cars and 23–25 for larger SUVs, with a maximum age often capped at 70–75. Drivers under 25 typically pay a young driver fee of €6–10 per day, capped at roughly €60 per rental. A UK licence held for less than 12 months can be rejected, even if you are over 25.
Are the roads in Naxos safe for first-time island drivers, and where do I need to be cautious?
The asphalt is fine along the main north-coast road from Chora to Aliki and the east-coast run to Apollonas, but the inland routes to Apeiranthos, Filoti and Koronos are steep, single-track and occasionally unpaved, with hairpins and no barriers. Drive on the right, expect wandering goats, dust from passing coaches in July, and slow-moving tractors in the harvest months. Avoid driving after dark on unlit mountain stretches.
Where can I park cheaply in Naxos Town (Chora), and which streets should I avoid?
Free parking is available at the large open lots behind the port near the bus terminal and on the road up to the Kastro — spaces fill by 10:00 in July and August, so arrive early or after 21:00. The alleys inside the old town and around Plateia Protodikeiou are resident-only or very narrow; do not squeeze a hire car through. There is no central paid parking zone, but a few private lots near the harbour charge €5–8 per day.
How many petrol stations are there on Naxos, and do I have to return the car with a full tank?
There are only around six stations on the whole island, mostly clustered around Chora, with others near Filoti and on the south coast at Tripodes. None is 24-hour, and most close by 21:00 (some earlier on Sundays). Most hire contracts are 'full-to-full' and charge €15–25 plus a refuelling service fee if you return it short, so top up at the Chora station near the port on your way back. Diesel is roughly €1.75 per litre, unleaded €1.85 (June 2025).
