Nikko Car Hire Guide: Where to Collect, What to Expect, and What to Watch For
Hiring a car in Nikko is a smart choice if you want to visit sights spread across the mountains and lakes—such as Lake Chūzenji, Kegon Falls and the Okunikko area—without relying on limited bus timetables. It can also be good value for couples or families splitting costs, especially if you plan multiple stops in one day. The main trade-offs are narrow roads, seasonal conditions (snow/ice in winter), and limited parking around popular attractions at peak times. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember Japan drives on the left (familiar), but you will typically need an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) alongside your UK photocard licence, and a credit card is often required for the deposit. Consider adding cover for tyres, glass and underbody if you plan mountain routes, and budget for tolls plus an ETC card (electronic toll system) if offered.
Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) – Gateway Airport for Nikko
Most international travellers reach Nikko via Tokyo. If you want maximum flexibility from the start, collect at HND (on-airport or shuttle-to-branch), then drive north via expressways. Pros: longest opening hours, larger fleet, easier one-way hires. Cons: higher toll costs, city driving around Tokyo, and airport surcharges may apply. For many visitors, a simpler option is to take the train to Nikko and collect locally to avoid Tokyo traffic and parking.
Tōbu-Nikkō Station Area (Tobu Railway)
Popular for visitors arriving on Tobu lines from Tokyo (Asakusa). Pros: very convenient collection after train arrival, avoids Tokyo driving, easy to start exploring the Nikko National Park area. Cons: smaller vehicle availability at busy periods; some branches may have reduced evening hours; car parks can be limited near the station during weekends.
JR Nikkō Station Area (JR Nikko Line)
Ideal if you are arriving with a JR itinerary and want a straightforward handover. Pros: walkable pickup, simple route out towards the World Heritage shrines and then up to Irohazaka. Cons: fewer branches than Tokyo-area hubs; English support may vary by provider; returns can be busy on Sundays and holidays.

Nikko's autumn colours draw visitors from across the world, and a medium-sized car offers the right balance of comfort and agility for scenic drives along the Iroha Plateau and Lake Chuzenji shoreline. It slips easily into central Nikko's tighter car parks and keeps running costs sensible for leisurely multi-stop days out.

Why Choose Airport Pickup (HND/NRT) for a Nikko Road Trip?

Airport pickup can be best if you want a bigger selection of cars, longer hours, and straightforward one-way rentals. It suits multi-destination itineraries beyond Nikko (e.g., onward to Fukushima or Nagano), but expect higher overall costs due to tolls, fuel, and possible airport surcharges—plus the extra effort of driving out of Tokyo.

Hiring a Car in Nikko: Your Questions Answered

Practical advice on driving licences, tolls, winter roads and parking for a self-drive trip around Nikko

Can I drive in Nikko with my UK driving licence, or do I need an IDP?
A valid UK photocard licence is accepted in Japan for stays under one year, so most British visitors can pick up a hire car in Nikko without an International Driving Permit. You must carry the original licence and, ideally, an official Japanese translation (available from the JAF for around ¥3,000) as police roadside checks do occur on the Irohazaka Winding Road. The minimum age at major agencies is 21, and drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge of about ¥1,500 per day.
Is the Irohazaka Winding Road safe for first-time visitors, and do I need snow chains in winter?
Irohazaka is a steep, twisting mountain pass with single-lane tunnels and a 30–40 km/h limit; the lower road is the recommended descent and the upper road the ascent. Between late November and mid-April, vehicles are legally required to fit tyre chains or winter tyres, and rental cars from outlets such as Times or Toyota do not always come equipped, so book snow chains (about ¥800–1,200 per day) in advance. Fog is common in October and after rain, so allow double the usual time between Chuzenji Lake and central Nikko.
What are the tolls like on the way from Tokyo to Nikko, and is an ETC card worth it?
The Nikko Utsunomiya Expressway from central Tokyo to Nikko IC costs roughly ¥3,500 in cash tolls for a standard car, and the Irohazaka slip road is around ¥530 one-way. ETC cards offer no real discount on this route, and a short 1–2 day rental is not worth the ¥324 issuing fee. Pay cash at the manned booth (have small notes ready) or use the ETC card on the dedicated lane. There are no congestion charges in or around Nikko itself.
Where can I park near Toshogu Shrine, and how much will it cost?
There is no free parking close to the Toshogu complex; the most convenient options are the official No. 1 and No. 2 car parks, both charging ¥500–600 for the day with a maximum stay of around 4–6 hours. Outside the main temple area you will find coin-operated lots at ¥200 per 30 minutes. Spaces fill up quickly during the autumn foliage (late October to mid-November) and Golden Week, so arrive before 09:00 or use the Park & Ride bus from Nikko Station.
Are Japanese petrol stations easy to use, and do I need to return the car with a full tank?
Petrol stations around Nikko are mostly self-service with staff guidance, and most hire cars run on regular unleaded (レギュラー,レギュ) at about ¥175–185 per litre in 2024. Full-to-full is standard at every major agency: pick up full, return full, and keep the final receipt as proof. There are 24-hour stations along Route 119 and near Utsunomiya, but rural ones in the Oku-Nikko area close around 19:00, so refuel in the town before heading up to Lake Chuzenji or Yumoto Onsen.
