Car Hire in Niš, Serbia: Competitive Prices and a Practical UK Traveller’s Guide

Pick up at Niš Airport or in the city centre, compare providers, and hit the road with straightforward advice on insurance, deposits, fuel policies and common fees.

UK Traveller Focus
Niš Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Niš is a convenient way to explore beyond the city—such as Niška Banja, Sićevo Gorge, and routes towards the Bulgarian and North Macedonian borders—without relying on limited regional public transport. For UK residents, the main things to plan are: bringing the correct driving documents, choosing sensible insurance cover, understanding deposits and fuel policies, and checking cross-border rules if you intend to leave Serbia. Pick-up is most straightforward at Niš Constantine the Great Airport, while city-centre locations can be better if you want flexibility and do not need a car immediately. Expect manual gearboxes to be common, and always inspect and photograph the vehicle at collection and return.

Niš Constantine the Great Airport (INI) – Arrivals Area
Most convenient pick-up point for flights into Niš. Pros: fast handover after landing, easier for luggage, direct access to main roads. Cons: may have fewer vehicle choices than larger airports, and prices can rise around peak travel dates; after-hours pick-up can incur a surcharge depending on the provider.
Niš City Centre (Trg Kralja Milana / Main Square Area)
Central location suited to travellers staying in town first. Pros: easy to reach on foot or by taxi, practical if you only need a car for day trips. Cons: limited parking and busier traffic at peak times; collection may be slower during office hours.
Niš Fortress & Riverside Zone (Tvrđava / Quayside Area)
Handy for hotels and attractions near the fortress. Pros: convenient for sightseeing itineraries and quick departure towards eastern routes. Cons: parking constraints and event-day congestion can make pick-up and return less predictable.

Narrow medieval lanes around Niš Fortress, the bustling pedestrian centre and tight kerbside parking make a compact hatchback the sensible choice. It slips into small bays, sips fuel, and air-conditioning copes with hot Pannonian summers. Ideal for short hops to the Skull Tower, Čegar and the city markets.

Mountain roads around Suva Planina, Stara Planina and the dramatic Devil's Town can be steep, twisty and occasionally rough. A mid-size SUV with automatic transmission handles hairpins with ease, copes with potholed secondary roads, and offers the ground clearance needed for gravel forest tracks and remote mountain viewpoints.

Travelling further afield to Belgrade, the Danube or the spa towns of Vrnjačka and Sokobanja with family or friends calls for extra seats and boot space. A people-carrier swallows suitcases, child seats and picnic gear, keeps everyone comfortable on long motorway stretches, and remains economical on fuel.

Niš Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers on licences, motorway tolls, winter rules and cross-border trips from southern Serbia

Can I use my UK driving licence in Serbia, or will I need an IDP?
Your UK photocard licence is valid for tourist stays up to 180 days, and Serbia does not legally require an International Driving Permit. In practice, however, most Niš rental desks (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, plus local firms such as Autoremont) will refuse to hand over the keys without a 1968 IDP, and roadside police routinely ask for one. Carry both, plus your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name. The minimum rental age is 21; drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of €10–15 per day, and over-70s should check individual policies.
What's the trickiest thing about switching from left-hand to right-hand driving?
Serbia drives on the right in right-hand-drive cars, so the first hours feel like the reverse of the UK. Give roundabouts extra caution: traffic already inside the circle has priority, not those entering — the opposite of British practice. Dipped headlights are compulsory 24 hours a day, year-round, even in bright sunshine. The A1 motorway runs 240 km north from Niš to Belgrade; the A4 runs east towards the Bulgarian border at Gradina. The Niš–Sofia route over Stara Planina is scenic but switchback-heavy, so watch for slow lorries and the occasional herd of cows.
How do Serbian motorway tolls work — and what's the fine for forgetting the e-tag?
Motorways in Serbia are free at the point of use, but you must buy an electronic vignette (e-tag) before joining the A1 or A4. Pick one up at any border post, petrol station or post office, or buy online via the EPP portal. A seven-day tag costs about €15 and a 30-day around €35 — much cheaper than paying per section. Cash and cards are accepted. Driving without a valid tag triggers a fine of roughly €150–300. There is no vignette needed for the regional roads around Niš itself, only the two motorways.
Do I need winter tyres, and can I cross the Stara Planina pass in January?
Winter tyres (or all-season tyres marked M+S) are compulsory from 1 November to 1 April, and you can be fined around €60 on the spot if stopped without them. Carry snow chains in the boot if you're heading over Stara Planina to Bulgaria, or up to Kopaonik — temperatures in January regularly drop below –10 °C, and the Dimitrovgrad–Pirot stretch can close entirely during heavy snow. In Niš itself the city grinds to a halt at the first real snowfall, so check the AMSM website or local news before driving out.
Can I take a hire car from Niš into Bulgaria or North Macedonia?
Yes — most major rental firms allow you to take a car from Niš into Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia or Romania, but only with written permission at pickup and a cross-border fee of €30–50 per day (or a flat €100–150 per rental). A Green Card insurance extension is included. Tell the desk in advance: undocumented crossings void your insurance entirely. The Bulgarian border at Gradina is under two hours from Niš, making day trips to Sofia straightforward. Some cheaper local firms refuse cross-border outright, so book with a multinational if this matters.
Where do I park in Niš, and what happens if I ignore a fine?
Paid street parking in central Niš uses a zone system marked with blue lines — buy a ticket from machines (coins only) or send an SMS to the number printed on the sign. Rates are roughly 60 dinars (€0.50) per hour in the red zone, free after 21:00 and on Sundays. Foreign drivers must pay police fines on the spot or before leaving the country; unpaid ones are passed to the rental company and charged to your card plus an admin fee. Speed cameras are common on the A1 — stick to 130 km/h.
