A practical UK-focused guide to choosing the right pick-up point in Ohrid, comparing options, and avoiding common fees—so you can explore Lake Ohrid with confidence.

Updated For UK Drivers
Ohrid Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Ohrid is one of the easiest ways to explore Lake Ohrid, nearby monasteries and beaches, and day trips towards Struga or the national parks without relying on seasonal buses or taxis. For travellers from the United Kingdom, driving is straightforward (right-hand traffic and roads can be narrower outside town), and most rentals offer clear fuel policies and optional cover. The main choice is between airport pick-up for maximum convenience on arrival, or a town pick-up if you prefer to avoid airport surcharges and only need a car for part of your stay. Always check deposit amount, excess, tyre/windscreen cover, and whether cross-border travel to nearby countries is permitted.

Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) – Arrivals Car Hire Desks
Pick up directly after landing. Car hire counters are typically in or near the arrivals area; collect keys, check the rental agreement, then proceed to the allocated parking bays. Best for late arrivals and short breaks where you want to be on the road quickly. Downsides can include slightly higher prices, limited out-of-hours staffing, and shorter queues turning into delays during peak summer flights.
Ohrid Town Centre – Old Bazaar / Main Square Area
Central pick-up is practical if you are staying in or near the Old Town and want to collect the car later in your trip. Pros: easy walk-up access from hotels, often more flexible pickup timing in business hours, and you can inspect the vehicle in better light. Cons: narrow streets, limited parking while you do paperwork, and traffic restrictions or congestion around the Old Town in peak season.
Lakeside Hotels Zone – Kej Makedonija / Promenade
Convenient for travellers staying along the lakefront who want minimal transfer time. Pros: close to accommodation and restaurants, and good access to the main road heading towards Struga. Cons: summer traffic and reduced parking availability, plus some locations may have shorter opening hours than airport desks.

Ohrid's lakeside lanes and old-town cobbles favour a compact car. Tight bays near the Kaneo viewpoint and the bazaar are no trouble, and fuel stays cheap for short hops between cafes and beaches. Light controls and modest dimensions make slow evening drives along the promenade genuinely relaxing. A small hatchback is more than enough for two travellers with day bags.

The road climbing onto Galicica National Park is steep, twisting and occasionally unmended, with sharp drop-offs and patchy tarmac. An SUV gives the ground clearance, stable footing and hill authority you need for the pass between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. Higher seating also helps on the rocky tracks to the shepherd villages. Four-wheel drive adds welcome security if a summer storm sweeps in.

Medium

Comfortable Cross-Border Cruiser

British visitors covering Skopje, Tirana and the Mavrovo loop need room for luggage and a comfortable ride. A medium saloon or estate cruises the A1 motorway calmly, copes with regional border queues, and handles Ohrid's main roads without feeling bulky. Air-conditioning and a quiet cabin ease the four-hour return from the capital, and boot space swallows hiking kit and souvenirs alike.

Ohrid Car Rental FAQs

Essential road trip advice for driving around Lake Ohrid and into North Macedonia's mountains

Can I use my UK driving licence in North Macedonia, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is valid for up to one year in North Macedonia, so most British travellers do not need an IDP. However, an International Driving Permit is still recommended: some rental desks in Skopje and Ohrid ask for one as a backup, and it makes police checks on the Ohrid–Struga road far smoother. If you hold a paper licence only, you must carry an IDP. Minimum age is usually 21, with a 25-driver surcharge common under-25.
What is the speed limit on the Ohrid–Bitola motorway, and are there fixed speed cameras?
Outside built-up areas the limit is 80 km/h, rising to 100 km/h on the new A2 dual carriageway near Ohrid. In town it drops to 50 km/h, and 30 km/h near schools. Fixed cameras operate on the A2 around Podmolje and Debarca, plus mobile units on the steep Galicnik descent. Fines are issued on the spot in MKD denars; paying in euros usually means a worse rate, so keep small change ready.
Do I have to pay tolls when driving out of Ohrid, and is the M-tag electronic tag worth it?
The A2 motorway between Ohrid, Bitola and Skopje is entirely toll-free at present, so no vignette or barrier payment is needed. You will only pay the Kicevo toll if you continue north towards Gostivar. A M-tag electronic device therefore offers no real benefit for a one-week Ohrid itinerary and most rental companies do not even stock them.
Is it realistic to drive from Ohrid into Albania (Lin or Pogradec) in a hire car?
Most major rental firms (Sixt, Hertz, Avis, local operators) forbid cross-border trips into Albania without a written Green Card endorsement, and the fine for ignoring this can exceed 1,000 EUR plus full insurance voiding. If you book with a smaller Macedonian agency, request the Albania cross-border fee in writing (around 30–50 EUR per day). The border at Sveti Naum–Tushemisht is open, but the road is rough and unlit after dark.
Are winter tyres or snow chains compulsory in the Ohrid region between December and February?
Snow chains or winter tyres are not legally compulsory in North Macedonia, yet the road up to Galicnik and the mountain pass to Bitola are regularly closed after 20 cm of fresh snow. In January, temperatures around Lake Ohrid hover between -4°C and 5°C, with black ice forming on the cobbled lanes of the Old Town. Insist on a vehicle fitted with all-season or winter tyres, and ask the rental desk to demonstrate the chains before you leave the airport.
Where can I safely park a hire car in Ohrid Old Town without getting a fine or towed?
Free blue-zone parking is signed along Kej Makedonija and the area near the bus station; tickets cost 50 MKD per hour between 08:00 and 20:00, payable in coins or via the Parking Ohrid app. The Old Town itself is largely pedestrianised between 10:00 and 24:00 in summer, and the local wardens clamp rather than tow. Always photograph all four corners of the car on collection, as kerb scratches in the narrow Gorni Saraj streets are extremely common.
