UK-Friendly Essentials
Paros Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Paros is one of the easiest ways to reach quieter beaches (such as Kolymbithres or Faragas), hilltop villages (Lefkes) and sunset spots without relying on bus timetables. Distances are short, but routes can be narrow and parking fills quickly in July–August. For UK travellers, the biggest practical differences are driving on the right, occasional aggressive overtakes by scooters, and ensuring your insurance is suitable for island roads. Book early in peak season for automatics, larger cars and the best rates. Always check the fuel policy, deposit requirements, and what is excluded (tyres, glass and underbody are common exclusions).

Paros National Airport (PAS) – Arrivals Area
Main airport for Paros. Rental desks are typically in or near the small terminal; vehicle handover is usually in the adjacent car park. Advantages: fast collection after landing, broader fleet choice, easier late/early pickup in summer. Disadvantages: can be busier at peak arrival times, and queues may form when several flights land close together.
Parikia Port (Ferry Harbour) Area
Popular for travellers arriving from Athens (Piraeus) or other Cyclades by ferry. Advantages: you can collect close to the port and avoid airport transfers; convenient if staying in Parikia. Disadvantages: heavy traffic around ferry arrivals, tight manoeuvring, and limited parking—allow extra time for return and fuel top-up.
Parikia Town Centre
Suitable if you want to settle in first and collect later. Advantages: walkable from many hotels and bus stops; easy to sort paperwork during business hours. Disadvantages: narrow streets, one-way systems, and parking constraints—consider arranging a clear meeting point for handover.

Paros enjoys hot, reliably sunny summers, making a convertible ideal for the island's scenic coastal roads. Cruising top-down between Naoussa, Kolymbithres and Golden Beach feels unforgettable, and a small convertible slips easily into tight harbours. Mild evenings also mean you can keep the roof down at sunset.

Cobbled lanes in Parikia and Naoussa are famously narrow, and parking in the old villages can be tight in summer. A small hatchback slips through low archways, squeezes into compact bays and keeps petrol costs low. For British visitors used to nippy city cars, this feels reassuringly familiar and stress-free.

Paros's interior rolls into hills, and several lovely coves such as Farangas are reached by partly unpaved tracks. A compact SUV gives the extra clearance and grip to tackle them without scraping the underside. Higher seating also helps on blind bends, and the boot swallows beach kit for a family day out.

Why Pick Up At Paros Airport (PAS)

Best for flight arrivals and early starts: quick access to the main roads, longer opening hours in peak season, and a wider choice of vehicles and child seats. Ideal if you want to drive straight to Naoussa, Parikia or your accommodation without organising a taxi.

Paros Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers to the most common questions British drivers ask before hiring a car in Paros

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Paros with a UK licence?
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, UK photocard licences are no longer automatically recognised in Greece. You must carry a 1968 IDP alongside your UK licence, obtainable from the RAC or AA before you fly. Most Paros rental desks will refuse to hand over the keys without it, and Greek police can fine you around €200 on the spot if stopped. Your UK licence alone is technically valid for short stays, but only with the IDP companion document — don't chance it.
Will I struggle driving on the right-hand side as a British driver?
The first day is the hardest, so book an automatic. Stick to the right-hand lane, and remember that roundabout traffic now comes from your left, not your right — give way accordingly. Outside Parikia and Naoussa traffic is genuinely light. The real challenge is in the villages: Lefkes, Kostos, and Marpissa have lanes barely two metres wide where a passing scooter will fold in your wing mirror — fold it in yourself first and breathe in.
Where are the petrol stations and what fuel should I use?
Paros has around a dozen stations clustered in Parikia, Naoussa, Aliki, and along the main Parikia–Naoussa road. They typically close for a siesta between 14:00 and 17:30, and most are shut on Sundays. Use unleaded 95 (αμόλυβδη 95) or diesel — both are clearly labelled. Top up the evening before you return the car; missing a 09:00 drop-off slot with an empty tank can trigger a refuelling surcharge of €60–80, plus an admin fee.
Is parking in Naoussa and Parikia really that bad in summer?
Worse than you think. In July and August the harbour roads are bumper-to-bumper from 10:00 onwards. There's free roadside parking about 1–2 km inland, but allow a 15-minute walk back. Paid lots near the port charge €4–7 per day in cash. Never leave valuables in view — opportunistic break-ins rise noticeably in peak season. In narrow village lanes, locals expect you to reverse into the nearest gap rather than attempt a three-point turn.
I'm 23 — will I face a young driver surcharge on Paros?
Almost certainly. Most international brands on Paros apply a 'young driver' fee of €7–12 per day for ages 21–24, and a few cap the upper age for larger crossovers at 25. Under 21 is generally refused outright, though a handful of local outfits accept 19+ with a higher insurance excess of €1,500–2,000. If you're 23–24, book early — fleet availability for under-25s is limited in August and the surcharge can double last-minute.
Should I take the full insurance offered at the rental desk?
On Paros, yes — or buy an annual UK excess-reimbursement policy first (typically £30–50) and decline the counter CDW. The island's roads scatter gravel on corners, goat herds wander near Lefkes, and roadside concrete posts will graze your alloys in Naoussa. Third-party cover is mandatory and included, but standard excess is €800–1,500. Counter CDW adds €12–18 per day; with a UK policy, your only risk is the glass, tyre and undercarriage gap, which is genuinely rare.
