Compare competitive prices, choose the right pick-up point, and use this practical UK-focused guide to avoid hidden fees, pick suitable insurance, and drive Pico confidently.

UK-Friendly Advice
Pico Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Pico is one of the easiest ways to explore the island’s vineyards, lava coastline and trailheads on your own timetable. Public transport is limited and taxis can add up quickly, so a small hire car often offers the best value—especially if you plan to visit multiple villages in a day. Expect short but winding drives, narrow lanes, and occasional poor visibility around Mount Pico; choose a vehicle size you feel confident manoeuvring. Book ahead in peak summer, check the fuel policy, and confirm what is covered by insurance and excess to avoid surprises at the desk.

Pico Airport (PIX) – Arrival Terminal Pick-Up
Pico’s main air gateway, typically the simplest pick-up for UK travellers connecting via Lisbon/Porto and onward flights. Rental desks are usually in or near the small terminal; vehicles are collected from a nearby car park. Pros: fastest start to your trip, best for late arrivals and early departures. Cons: limited fleet on busy dates and fewer after-hours options; pre-booking is strongly advised.
Madalena (Town Centre/Port Area)
Popular for travellers arriving by ferry from Faial and those staying near cafés, wineries and seafront accommodation. Pros: easy to combine with ferry timetables and central lodging; quick access to island roads. Cons: fewer cars than the airport at peak times and parking can be tighter near the waterfront.
São Roque do Pico (Town Centre)
A convenient base on the north coast with good access to swimming spots and viewpoints. Pros: useful if your accommodation is in the north/east and you do not need an airport pick-up; often calmer pick-up experience. Cons: reduced opening hours and limited vehicle choice compared with airport-based supply.

Pico's towns such as Madalena and São Roque have narrow, winding streets and tight parking. A compact car slips through old stone lanes with ease, costs little in fuel on short village hops, and parks where larger vehicles cannot. Ideal for two travellers ticking off wineries, cafés and coastal viewpoints.

Reaching the Mount Pico trailhead, the lava caves at Gruta das Torres, and remote viewpoints means steep gravel tracks. An SUV offers the ground clearance and confident grip needed on volcanic surfaces, plus space for hiking boots and warm layers. A sensible choice when weather closes in and mountain mist rolls across the slopes.

Pico's south and west coastal roads unfurl past black lava fields, vineyards and the Atlantic horizon — best enjoyed with the roof down. A convertible turns a simple drive from Madalena to Lajes into a slow, sun-soaked experience. Perfect in the mild Azorean summer when rain is rare and the sea breeze keeps things comfortable.

Pico Island Car Hire & Driving FAQ

UK traveller essentials on licences, Mount Pico roads, tolls, fuel and rental rules in the Azores

Can I drive in Pico with just my UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is valid for tourist stays of up to 185 days in Portugal — no International Driving Permit required. Rental firms on Pico (Hertz, Ilha Verde, Autatlântida, Bravacars) all require the licence to have been held for at least 12 months, and you'll need to present your passport plus a credit card in the main driver's name. Drivers under 25 should expect a young-driver surcharge of €5–€15 per day, with similar rules across the Azores. Always check the collision-damage waiver excess, which on Pico often runs higher than the mainland because of the volcanic gravel roads.
I've never driven on the right before — what catches British drivers out on Pico?
Three things: (1) you'll drift towards the verge on right-hand bends because the steering wheel is on the left — keep your eyes well to the centre line; (2) overtaking on the right feels counter-intuitive, so only commit when you have a long, clear sightline; (3) at junctions you give way to traffic from your LEFT, which is the opposite of UK practice. On Pico's narrow regional roads (ER 1-1ª, ER 2-1ª), locals drive faster than you'd expect and basalt walls leave no margin for error. Spend your first day on short hops between Madalena and São Roque before tackling the mountain.
Is the road to Mount Pico trailhead safe in a normal hire car?
Yes — the sealed road from Madalena to the Mount Pico car park at Cabeço do Tejo is fine in a small hatchback or saloon. It is, however, very steep, often single-track, and lined with rough basalt walls that will scrape wing mirrors if you cut corners. In dry, clear weather a standard car is fine. Above 1,200 m, fog can drop in within five minutes — switch on headlights, drop below 30 km/h, and never overtake. Strong cross-winds are also common near the upper car park. If you intend to leave the asphalt and explore the lava-field tracks around São Roque or Lajes, a 4x4 with higher clearance is strongly recommended, because standard tyres shred quickly on the a'a lava.
Are there motorway tolls on Pico, and will I need a Via Verde tag?
No — Pico has no toll motorways, bridges, tunnels or congestion charges. The only electronic toll roads in Portugal are on the mainland: the A22 in the Algarve, the Vasco da Gama and 25 de Abril bridges in Lisbon, and the A28 near Porto. You will not need a Via Verde device at any point on the island, and rental companies on Pico rarely include one. Your only driving-related expenses will be fuel and street parking. In Madalena expect to pay €0.50–€1.00 per hour at on-street meters, or use the EasyPark or MOP app for digital payment. Free, unrestricted parking is easy to find outside town centres and at most trailheads.
What's the minimum age to hire a car on Pico, and how much is the young-driver fee?
Most rental companies on Pico set the minimum hire age at 21, with the licence held for at least 12 months; some premium categories require 25. Drivers under 25 — and sometimes under 30 for larger engines — pay a young-driver surcharge of €5–€15 per day, usually capped at €60–€75 per rental. Drivers over 70 are normally accepted without a medical certificate, though a few firms will ask for one. Children under 12 must sit in a booster or child seat, which rental companies supply for €3–€5 per day if not pre-booked. Fleet sizes on Pico are small, so for July or August book at least 2–3 months ahead.
Are there 24-hour petrol stations on Pico, or will I run out of fuel after dinner?
Pico has only around six petrol stations, concentrated in Madalena, São Roque do Pico, Lajes do Pico and São Mateus. Crucially, none operate around the clock — most close between 20:00 and 22:00, and Sunday hours are reduced. If you're returning a hire car to Madalena after an evening flight or ferry, refuel the previous afternoon or pay the rental company's refuelling premium (typically 2× the pump price). Both petrol (gasolina 95) and diesel (gasóleo) are stocked, but LPG autogás is almost impossible to find. Electric charging points are limited to a handful of municipal locations and a few hotels — renting an EV on Pico is not yet practical.
