Car Hire In Pointe-à-Pitre: Practical Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Pointe-à-Pitre is one of the easiest ways to explore Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre at your own pace, from beaches and rainforest viewpoints to local markets. Public transport can be limited outside main routes, and taxis quickly become costly for day trips. For UK travellers, key things to note are driving on the right, possible automatic-gear availability constraints (book early if needed), and the importance of checking excess, deposit requirements, and fuel policy before you arrive. Most visitors collect at Pointe-à-Pitre Le Raizet Airport for speed and choice, while downtown locations can suit those staying in the city first.

Pointe-à-Pitre Le Raizet Airport (PTP) – Car Rental Area
Best for arrivals from the UK (often via Paris) who want the widest choice and quickest start. Rental desks are located at/near the terminal; follow signs for ‘Location de voitures’. Advantages: longer opening hours, more vehicle availability (including family cars and SUVs), easier out-of-hours support. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, queues at peak arrival times, and it can be busier to inspect the car carefully.
Pointe-à-Pitre City Centre (Near Marinas & Hotels)
Convenient if you spend a night or two in town before exploring the island. Pros: you avoid immediate airport traffic, and collection can be calmer with easier vehicle inspection. Cons: fewer cars to choose from, shorter opening hours, and you may need a taxi or transfer from the airport first.
Jarry Business District (Baie-Mahault Area)
A practical pick-up point between Pointe-à-Pitre and many accommodations, especially for business travellers or those staying nearby. Pros: good road access, often easier parking and pick-up logistics than the centre. Cons: not walkable from most tourist areas, and availability can be limited compared with the airport.

Guadeloupe Car Hire FAQs

Common questions from UK drivers before hiring in Pointe-à-Pitre

Can I hire a car in Guadeloupe with a UK driving licence?
Yes. Your UK photocard licence is valid in Guadeloupe (a French overseas territory) for stays of up to one year — no International Driving Permit (IDP) required. However, most rental firms want you to have held the licence for at least 12 months and to be 21 or older. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a “young driver” surcharge of €20–€30 (around £18–£27) per day. Bring your passport, a credit card in the main driver's name, and a printed DVLA share code if you still use a paper counterpart.
I've only ever driven on the left. Will I cope on Guadeloupe's roads?
You will, but allow two or three days to recalibrate. Vehicles are right-hand drive and you drive on the right; roundabouts circulate clockwise — the reverse of the UK. Start with a small automatic or compact manual, avoid rush hour in central Pointe-à-Pitre, and leave the Basse-Terre mountain roads until you feel confident. A high-vis vest must be kept in the boot, and a warning triangle is also compulsory; most hire cars include both.
Is it risky to hire a car during hurricane season (June–November)?
Mostly fine, with sensible precautions. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking in August and September. Most days are perfectly driveable, but tropical downpours can flood low-lying roads within minutes and trigger landslides in the mountains. Check the Météo-France bulletin each morning, never drive through standing water, and avoid night driving in heavy rain. If a red alert is issued, return the car early — a flooded engine routinely costs €3,000+ to replace.
How much should I budget for tolls, fuel and insurance extras?
There are no toll roads on the island. Petrol (SP95-E10) costs about €1.75–1.85 per litre and diesel (gazole) €1.65–1.75, both noticeably dearer than mainland France because of import costs. Basic rental insurance covers collision and theft, but the standard excess is €800–1,500. Take a full excess waiver to bring it to zero, typically €12–€18 per day. Expect a €200–€300 credit-card pre-authorisation at pickup, refunded within about a fortnight of a clean return.
What are the speed limits, drink-drive rules and are there speed cameras?
Limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on the expressway (RN1). Fixed and mobile speed cameras operate around Les Abymes, Gosier and the main north–south route. The legal alcohol limit is 0.5 g/L — lower than the UK's 0.8 g/L — so skip the Ti'Punch if you're driving. Fines are deducted from your pre-authorisation, and rental firms typically add a €30–€50 handling fee on top.
Can I drive up to La Soufrière volcano, and is the road difficult?
You can — it's a popular day trip from Pointe-à-Pitre — but don't underestimate it. The D11 climbs roughly 32 km from Basse-Terre town to the car park at around 1,100 m, with sustained hairpins, narrow sections and sheer drops. Drive only in daylight, in dry weather, in a small but punchy car (1.2–1.4 petrol is ample). Allow 45 minutes each way, watch for cyclists and the occasional fallen rock, and never attempt it in the rain.
