UK Travellers
Pontevedra Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Pontevedra is an excellent base for exploring the Rías Baixas: coastal drives, vineyards, and day trips to Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and the Atlantic beaches are far easier with a car than relying on timetables. Hiring a car also helps if you are staying outside the historic centre, travelling with luggage, or planning multiple stops in one day. Do note that Pontevedra’s old town has narrow streets, limited access and paid parking, so a smaller car can be the most practical choice. UK visitors should also allow for manual transmissions being more common and should check whether their rental includes cross‑border cover only if you plan to leave Spain (most trips around Galicia will not require it).
Vigo Airport (VGO) Car Rental Area
The closest major airport to Pontevedra. Airport pick‑up typically offers longer opening hours, broader vehicle choice and easier out‑of‑hours returns. Driving time to Pontevedra is roughly 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. Advantage: convenient after landing, ideal for onward travel. Disadvantage: can be slightly pricier than city branches at peak times, and queues can form during busy arrival banks.
Pontevedra City Centre (Historic Core Edge)
Good for travellers already staying in Pontevedra and collecting a car only for day trips. Advantage: easy to reach on foot from central accommodation and useful if you do not need a vehicle every day. Disadvantage: restricted traffic zones and tight streets nearby can make first-time pick‑up/returns more stressful; parking is often limited and paid.
Pontevedra Railway/Bus Station Area
Practical if arriving by train or coach from other Spanish cities. Advantage: straightforward onward route to main roads and often easier loading/unloading with luggage. Disadvantage: limited branch hours compared with airports and fewer same‑day vehicle options during busy weekends.

Pick Up at Vigo (VGO) or Santiago (SCQ) for Maximum Choice

Airport locations usually have the widest fleet, longer opening hours and simpler returns, which is ideal for UK arrivals on tight schedules. Deals can be strong when booked in advance, and you can start your Galicia road trip immediately without arranging transfers first.

Pontevedra Driving & Car Hire FAQs

Licences, parking, tolls, weather and road rules for UK self-drive visitors to Galicia

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Spain with my UK photocard licence?
Since Brexit, your UK photocard licence is valid on its own for up to 6 months as a tourist in Spain - no IDP is legally required. That said, several rental firms (notably Goldcar, Centauro and some local Galician operators) still insist on a 1968 IDP before they hand over the keys, so it's worth ordering one online from the AA for £5.50 - it usually arrives in 2-3 working days. You must also be at least 21 (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) or 19 (Goldcar, OK Mobility) and have held the licence for a minimum of 12 months. Carry the photocard, not the old paper counterpart.
Can I drive into Pontevedra's old town, and where should I park the car?
The casco vello is largely pedestrianised - ANPR cameras at every entry gate only let residents, taxis and delivery vans through between 08:00 and 22:00. Foreign plates entering by mistake pick up a €90 fine posted to your rental address. Park instead in one of three underground car parks: Praza da Ferrería, A Parda or Campolongo - €1.50-€2.10 per hour, €12-€18 for 24 hours. The zona azul (blue zone) street parking on the ring road is cheaper at €0.65/hour but fills by 10am on Saturdays in summer. Choose a hotel with private parking - most central ones include it.
How much is the AP-9 motorway toll near Pontevedra, and is it worth buying a Via-T tag?
The AP-9 is Galicia's main toll motorway, running the length of the coast from Ferrol to the Portuguese border. The Vigo-Pontevedra stretch is about €1.85, and the full Santiago-Vigo run is around €7. All toll booths accept cash, contactless cards and the Via-T electronic tag. If you plan to drive more than three or four toll sections in a week, ask your rental firm to add a Via-T - it's typically €1.50/day and lets you sail through the dedicated lanes. The free N-550 alternative adds 30-40 minutes and crosses dozens of roundabouts - fine in July, frustrating in February rain.
I'm 23 and from the UK - how much extra will I pay as a young driver in Spain?
Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge in Spain - typically €15-€25 per day, capped at €150-€200 per rental. Hertz, Avis and Europcar sit at the top of that range; Goldcar and Record Go fold the fee into a higher base rate, so always compare the final total, not the headline price. Drivers under 21 are refused by most major firms, though Centauro and some local Galician operators will rent from 19. The surcharge is pre-authorised on your credit card at the desk, so make sure you have at least €300 of headroom on top of the rental cost itself.
Is driving in Galicia in winter safe, and what about the rain and fog?
Galicia is one of the wettest regions in Spain - 1,500-2,000mm of rain a year, mostly between October and April. The haar (cold sea fog) rolls in without warning, especially along the Costa da Morte. Spanish law requires dipped headlights whenever the wipers are on, and fines start at €200 for ignoring it. Snow is rare on the coast but routine in the Serra do Suído, Manzaneda and Ancares mountains from December to March - check the DGT's live traffic map (dgt.es) before driving inland, and fit winter tyres if you're heading above 800m in those months. The Rías Baixas coastal road stays open year-round.
