Car Hire in Port Vila, Vanuatu: Explore Efate for Less

Compare competitive prices and use this practical UK-focused guide to choose the right pickup point, avoid hidden fees, and drive confidently around Port Vila and beyond.

Updated for UK Travellers
Port Vila Car Hire Guide (UK Travellers)
Hiring a car in Port Vila is one of the easiest ways to explore Efate beyond the main resort strips—think lagoon viewpoints, beaches, villages and waterfalls—on your own timetable. Roads are a mix of sealed and rougher surfaces, so choose a vehicle that matches your route (a small hatchback for town and main roads; higher clearance if you plan to venture off the sealed sections). For travellers from the United Kingdom, driving is generally straightforward as Vanuatu drives on the right-hand side of the road; allow a little time to adjust at junctions and roundabouts. Expect a security deposit on a credit card, limited out-of-hours staffing, and stricter rules around where you may take the vehicle (some companies restrict certain coastal tracks).

Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) – Arrivals Area
Most convenient pickup after landing. Rental desks are typically in or near the arrivals area; vehicles are usually collected in the airport car park or via a short meet-and-greet. Pros: fastest start to your trip, easiest for late arrivals when pre-arranged, good for families with luggage. Cons: fewer walk-up options at peak times, airport surcharges may apply, limited choice if you have not pre-booked.
Port Vila CBD (Central Business District) – Near the Main Harbourfront
A practical choice if you are staying centrally and want to compare options after you arrive. Pros: easy to reach from many hotels, straightforward handover for shorter rentals, useful if you do not want a car for your whole stay. Cons: limited parking and busier traffic, shorter opening hours, you may need a taxi to collect the car if you are outside the centre.
Mele / Airport Road Hotel Zone
Good for travellers staying along the coastal resort area between town and the airport. Pros: convenient to collect near accommodation, often easier parking and calmer roads, handy for day trips around Efate. Cons: fewer offices than the CBD, availability can be limited in high season, you may pay more for delivery/collection services.

Efate's 130-kilometre ring road mixes smooth tarmac with potholed stretches, gravel detours and the odd flooded creek after tropical showers. An SUV's raised clearance, sturdy suspension and confident grip handle it all comfortably, letting British holidaymakers reach blue holes, beaches and villages without flinching at every bump.

Port Vila's compact centre features narrow lanes, busy market traffic and tight kerbside parking near Mama's Market and the seafront. A small hatchback nips through it all, sips fuel at Vanuatu's steep pump prices and slots easily into any gap — ideal for short hops between cafés, dive shops and harbour viewpoints.

Beyond the sealed sections lie rutted tracks to hidden waterfalls, cascade pools and the wild east coast. A pickup truck's four-wheel drive, high clearance and open tray shrug off mud during the November–April wet season, while easily carrying snorkels, eskies and camping kit for proper off-grid escapes around Efate.

Practical questions every UK traveller asks before driving around Efate, Vanuatu

Can I use my UK driving licence in Vanuatu, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is technically valid in Vanuatu for tourist stays of up to 30 days, and no International Driving Permit is legally required. In practice, however, almost every rental desk at Bauerfield Airport (VLI) will refuse to hand over the keys without an IDP alongside your UK licence. Order a 1968-convention IDP from the AA or RAC before you fly (cost roughly £5.50, valid one year). Carry both documents on every journey, as police spot checks on the Efate ring road are common, and a missing translation can mean an on-the-spot fine paid in Vatu.
Port Vila drives on the right — what should British drivers watch out for?
Vanuatu drives on the right-hand side of the road, the exact opposite of the UK, and this catches out almost every British visitor. The most common mistakes are drifting across the centre line, misjudging the kerb on left turns, and freezing at roundabouts — always give way to traffic already on the circle, which flows clockwise. For your first day, book an automatic rather than a manual: gear changes with the wrong hand are surprisingly hard work. Spend an hour driving around central Port Vila and the road to Erakor Lagoon before tackling the coast.
Do I need a 4x4 to explore Efate, or will a normal car cope?
A standard saloon is fine within Port Vila itself, where most roads are sealed but heavily potholed, but it is a poor choice for anywhere else on the island. Only about half of the 75 km Efate ring road is tarmacked; the rest is sharp coral-rubble track that becomes slippery mud after the afternoon downpour, and a low car will scrape its sump within 20 km of town. A Suzuki Jimny or similar 4x4 is strongly recommended for Blue Lagoon, Eton Beach and the inland waterfalls, and costs roughly VT 8,000–12,000 (£65–£100) per day.
What are the speed limits in Vanuatu and how strictly are they enforced?
The default limits are 50 km/h in built-up Port Vila and 80 km/h on the open road, but signage is sparse, so assume 50 km/h unless you see a higher number posted. Police mobile speed traps are most often set up on the Lini Highway approach to the airport and on the Teouma straight, and fines are paid in cash (Vatu) on the spot to the officer. Speeding is rarely the biggest risk; the more common cause of accidents at dusk is hitting a free-roaming pig, dog or chicken, especially on the unlit sections outside town.
How much is the insurance excess, and is the zero-excess waiver worth buying?
Standard rental cover in Port Vila carries an excess of VT 50,000–100,000 (around £330–£660) for damage and theft, and on any unsealed road that excess is almost guaranteed to be triggered by a single stone chip or mirror strike. Paying the daily zero-excess waiver at VT 3,000–5,000 (£25–£40) is excellent value, and far cheaper than a single replacement wing mirror on a Jimny. Read the small print carefully: most waivers exclude tyres, windscreen and underbody damage, so slow right down on coral tracks and avoid driving through fords.
