Punta del Este Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Punta del Este is one of the easiest ways to explore the Maldonado coast at your own pace—especially if you plan to visit nearby beach towns (such as La Barra and José Ignacio), vineyards, or make day trips beyond the resort area. Roads are generally straightforward, but in peak summer you can expect heavier traffic and limited parking near the peninsula. For UK travellers, the biggest practical advantages are flexibility and time saved versus taxis; the main trade-offs are parking management, fuel planning, and ensuring your insurance/excess is clearly understood before you drive away.

Punta del Este Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on UK licences, motorway tolls, roundabout priorities, parking and cross-border drives for your Uruguay self-drive holiday

Can I drive in Punta del Este with my UK photocard licence?
Your UK photocard licence is valid in Uruguay for up to six months as a tourist, so an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not strictly required. We still recommend buying one (around £5.50 from the AA) because rental desks, police checkpoints and insurance clerks may ask for it, and it removes language friction if you cross into Argentina. Note that Uruguay drives on the right, which is the opposite of the UK, and around 70% of hire cars here are manual — book an automatic well in advance if you want one, especially for the January–February peak. Most companies require drivers to be at least 21, and often 25 for premium models.
How much will the tolls cost from Montevideo Airport to Punta del Este?
Budget roughly 400–500 UYU (£8–£10) for the 120 km drive from Montevideo Carrasco Airport to Punta del Este along Ruta 9 (Interbalnearia), which passes three or four toll plazas. Most booths accept Uruguayan pesos in cash and credit cards, while locals use a 'tag' prepaid windscreen device. Have small notes ready — queues can stretch 30 minutes on Friday afternoons in January. Off-peak the journey takes 90 minutes, but during the first weekend of February, when wealthy Argentines flood in, allow up to three hours and try to leave before 07:00.
I'm 23 — will I be hit with a young-driver surcharge in Punta del Este?
Yes. Most major rental firms — Hertz, Localiza, Sixt and Budget — set a minimum age of 21 to 25, and any driver under 25 pays a 'young driver' surcharge of US$10–15 (£8–£12) per day, charged per under-25 driver on the contract. Some smaller local agencies rent to 19-year-olds for a higher fee, while a few premium brands insist on 25+ with no surcharge. There is no formal upper age limit, although drivers over 70 may be asked for a recent medical certificate. Book early — automatics in the small-car category sell out fast in January and February, and one-way drop-off fees to Montevideo can add another US$80.
Who actually has priority at roundabouts in Uruguay?
Give way to traffic coming from your right. This is the opposite of the UK rule (where left-lane traffic has priority), and it is the single biggest mistake British visitors make when driving in Uruguay. Punta del Este has several large rotondas along Avenida Italia, Avenida Roosevelt and the peninsula entrance, where confusing priorities regularly cause minor shunts in the December-to-March high season. Approach slowly, use your indicators clearly to show your exit, and never assume an entering vehicle will stop for you. When in doubt, yield — local drivers are rarely patient with hesitant tourists, and rental excess can easily top US$800.
Is parking free in Punta del Este, or will I have to pay?
From April to November street parking on the peninsula is mostly free, easy and unregulated, and you can usually find a spot within two blocks of the beach. From mid-December to early March, however, attendants in bright yellow vests charge 100–200 UYU (£2–£4) per hour along the rambla (coastal avenue), Calle Gorlero and the port area. Always park facing the direction of traffic — 'contramano' (the wrong way) triggers a 2,000 UYU fine that the rental company will pass on, plus an admin fee. Hotel, restaurant and casino car parks are a safer bet in high season, and most accept credit cards.
Can I take the hire car across the border to Argentina or Brazil?
Yes, but only with the rental company's written permission, usually arranged 48 hours in advance and almost always costing a cross-border surcharge of US$25–35 per day. The vehicle's local third-party cover does not extend abroad, so the security deposit and excess will be higher. Carry your passport, original UK licence and IDP at every police check. Punta del Este to Colonia del Sacramento is 4 hours, then another 1.5 hours by ferry to Buenos Aires — most firms forbid crossing into certain northern Argentine provinces for security reasons, so always confirm the exact route before signing.
