Compare airport and city-centre pickup options, understand insurance and fees, and hit the road around Brittany with confidence—tailored for travellers from the United Kingdom.

UK-to-Rennes Essentials
Rennes Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Rennes is a practical way to explore Brittany beyond the city—ideal for day trips to Saint-Malo, Dinan, Mont-Saint-Michel (nearby), and the Emerald Coast. Rennes itself has good public transport, but a car adds flexibility for rural villages, coastal routes, and accommodation outside the centre. For UK travellers, plan for right-hand-drive differences (you will drive on the right in France), keep an eye on low-emission rules in larger French cities, and check your rental’s cross-border permissions if you intend to visit nearby regions. In Rennes, airport pickup typically offers the widest choice and longer opening hours; city-centre branches can be easier if you’re arriving by train and only need a car for part of your stay.

Rennes–Saint-Jacques Airport (RNS) Car Rental Area
Most convenient for flights into Rennes. Rental desks are located in/near the terminal and vehicles are collected from the airport car parks. Pros: broad vehicle choice, later opening hours, straightforward onward driving via N136 ring road. Cons: airport surcharges can apply, queues at peak flight times, and you may pay for a full day if you collect late.
Rennes City Centre (République / Old Town Area)
Good if you’re staying centrally and want to avoid airport fees. Pros: easy to pick up after settling in, walkable access from hotels, often lighter traffic outside peak hours. Cons: limited parking for handover, narrower streets, and restricted access zones can make navigation slower than expected.
Rennes Train Station Area (Gare de Rennes)
Popular for arrivals by TGV from Paris or connections from the UK via Eurostar + onward rail. Pros: ideal for collecting right after the train, good for one-way rentals, plenty of nearby services (fuel, cafés). Cons: busy traffic at rush hour, parking structures may have height limits, and some branches close earlier than the airport.

The Côte de Granit Rose and Saint-Malo shoreline are made for open-top driving from June to September. Drop the roof on quiet coastal back roads and feel the Atlantic breeze. Just stash the hood up if a Breton shower rolls in. Easy to park at the small beach coves along the way.

A medium hatchback handles Rennes' medieval one-way streets and slips into car parks near the Parlement de Bretagne with ease. It remains economical on longer runs to Mont-Saint-Michel, Dinan and the Carnac stones. The boot is generous for picnic hampers and a couple of suitcases. A natural fit for couples touring Brittany's heritage towns.

Brittany's lanes can be narrow, bumpy and damp well into spring, so an SUV gives the raised view and grip you want on drives through the Forêt de Brocéliande or the cliffs near Cancale. The taller boot swallows pushchairs, beach gear and cases for four. A natural pick for UK families used to estate cars.

Rennes Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers on licences, tolls, low-emission zones, parking and age rules when you rent a car in Brittany

After Brexit, can I still drive in France with just my UK photocard licence?
No, not on its own. Since 1 January 2021, UK licence holders must carry a valid 1968-convention International Driving Permit alongside the photocard. Order it from the AA or RAC (£5.50 each) before you fly; standard processing takes up to 5 working days, so apply at least a fortnight ahead. The 1949 IDP is no longer recognised. Rennes–Saint-Jacques airport hire desks routinely refuse cars to anyone without a current IDP, and an on-the-spot police check costs €90 minimum – enough to ruin a holiday.
Will I be fined €135 for driving into Rennes without a Crit'Air sticker?
Possibly, yes. Rennes runs a permanent ZFE-m (low-emission zone) covering the whole city inside the ring road (rocade), and Crit'Air vignettes have been compulsory there since 2025. Order yours online at certificat-air.gouv.fr (€3.72 + postage) at least three weeks before you fly. Most post-2011 diesels get a green Crit'Air 2 sticker; pre-2006 petrols and Euro 4 diesels are banned outright. Rental firms in Brittany don't always supply one, so ask when you collect – a roadside fine is €90 to €135.
How do I pay motorway tolls from Rennes to Saint-Malo or Nantes?
Cash booths are almost gone. Every barrier on the A11, A81 and A84 now has a 't' lane for télépéage badges and a 'CB' lane that accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay. The Rennes–Saint-Malo run via the N137 is toll-free, but Rennes–Nantes on the A11 costs roughly €15 one-way, and Rennes–Paris is around €35. Hire a télépéage tag from Sixt, Europcar or Virtuo for €2-3 a day – it doubles as a barrier-skipper on Brittany's motorways and as a free-flow pass on the Paris Périphérique.
Can I just drive my hire car straight into Rennes old town?
Not without trouble. The medieval centre is largely pedestrianised and patrolled by ANPR cameras – enter a bus or taxi lane and you'll be sent a €90 fine by post a fortnight later. Better plan: leave the car in one of the five park-and-ride sites on the metro (Henri Fréville, Cesson-ViaSilva, La Poterie, Le Blosne and Saint-Jacques), all €4.20 a day with a free return ticket for two. On-street 'zone rouge' parking in the outer centre is pay-and-display Mon–Sat 9am–7pm, about €2/hour.
I'm 22 – will I actually be able to hire a car in Rennes?
Yes, but it'll cost you. All the major firms (Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Enterprise) rent to drivers aged 21+ but slap a 'jeune conducteur' surcharge of €25-35 per day on top of the base rate, with a cap of €350 per rental. Drivers under 25 are also excluded from larger vehicle groups – expect to be limited to a Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 or similar small car. Hertz is the strictest, with a 21-and-over floor; some local French suppliers accept over-19s but at much higher premiums.
