UK Traveller Essentials
Rionegro Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Rionegro is a practical base for exploring eastern Antioquia: it sits close to José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) and offers quick road access to Medellín, Guatapé, El Retiro and regional business parks. Hiring a car can save time versus relying on taxis and app rides, especially if you plan day trips or travel with luggage. Expect mountainous driving, frequent rain showers and occasional congestion at peak commuting hours. Bring a credit card for the security deposit, check whether your quote includes full cover or only basic liability, and confirm the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually the clearest). For UK travellers, remember you will drive on the right; allow time to adjust when leaving the car park and when joining faster roads.

José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) — Rionegro
The main airport serving Medellín and Rionegro. Car hire counters are typically within or adjacent to the terminal area with vehicles collected from nearby car parks. Best for immediate onward travel to Medellín, Guatapé or the coffee-region routes via major roads. Advantages: widest choice of companies and opening hours, easier late arrivals, and straightforward drop-off before flights. Disadvantages: prices can be slightly higher than town locations, queues at busy times, and you may pay airport-related surcharges depending on the supplier.
Rionegro Town Centre
Convenient if you are staying locally or collecting after a few days without a car. Advantages: potentially calmer pickup experience, may suit shorter rentals, and can be closer to hotels in the centre. Disadvantages: smaller fleet selection, shorter opening hours, and you may need a taxi to reach the branch with luggage.
San Antonio de Pereira (Rionegro District)
A popular dining and accommodation area within Rionegro. Advantages: handy for travellers staying nearby and can be easier than airport collection if you prefer to settle in first. Disadvantages: limited supplier presence, fewer vehicle categories (especially automatics/SUVs), and weekend traffic/parking can be tight.

Rionegro sits on the eastern Andean slopes, with twisting mountain passes leading to Guatapé, El Peñol and the coffee region. A robust SUV provides reassuring grip on steep gradients, handles uneven tarmac and offers elevated visibility when overtaking lorries. Higher ground clearance copes with occasional gravel sections and potholes common on rural Colombian roads. The elevated seating position also makes those dramatic Andean panoramas far more enjoyable during longer journeys.

Medellín's bustling streets, the narrow lanes of Rionegro's old quarter and the lively town centres of nearby Marulanda and El Carmen de Viboral demand a compact car. A small hatchback slips into tight parking spaces, sips fuel during stop-start traffic and keeps running costs low for British travellers on a budget. Light steering and a tight turning circle make navigating one-way streets and bustling market areas refreshingly stress-free.

Travelling with family or friends across the Eje Cafetero, to Jardín or along the rivers of Antioquia, a van offers generous legroom and ample boot space for suitcases, hiking gear and souvenirs. Sliding doors ease entry on uneven roadside stops, while a higher roofline makes long motorway stretches between Rionegro and Manizales considerably more comfortable. Perfect for groups seeking a relaxed, sociable journey through Colombia's verdant countryside.

Arrive and Drive: Collect at MDE for Maximum Flexibility

Airport pickup at José María Córdova (MDE) is ideal if you are landing with luggage, arriving late, or heading straight to Medellín/Guatapé. You’ll usually find the broadest selection of vehicles (including SUVs for hilly routes) and clearer processes for inspections and after-hours support. Do check for airport surcharges, confirm what insurance is included in the headline price, and allow extra time at peak periods for queues and paperwork.

Rionegro Car Hire: UK Driver FAQs

Practical answers for British travellers hiring a car at José María Córdova Airport and driving around Antioquia

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Colombia, or is my UK photocard licence enough?
Your UK photocarp licence is technically valid in Colombia for up to 90 days as a tourist, but in practice every major rental firm at José María Córdova International Airport (MDE, in Rionegro) will ask to see a 1968-format IDP alongside it. The permit costs about £5.50 from the AA and is usually issued within 24 hours. Without it, you will be turned away at the desk — and a taxi back into Medellín to sort it out is not cheap.
I am used to the left — what should I expect switching to right-hand-drive cars on the right of the road?
The biggest hazard is the first hour, not the first day. Book an automatic if you can, and practise overtaking in a quiet car park before leaving the airport. Keep left on dual carriageways, remember that Colombian roundabouts circulate clockwise, and do not sit in the outside lane unless you are turning right. Common mistakes: indicating too early at roundabouts, drifting across the centre line, and missing right-turn filter arrows on the Rionegro–Medellín highway.
How much are tolls on the Rionegro–Medellín highway, and can I pay by card?
Expect two peajes each way on the 35 km airport-to-city run, totalling roughly 25,000–30,000 COP (£5–6). Most booths accept cash COP and Visa/Mastercard, but smaller lanes are cash-only and queues build up at peak times. An electronic tag (FlyPass) can be hired from Avis, Localiza and Budget for about 25,000 COP per day, which speeds things up considerably but is not essential for short stays.
How challenging are the mountain roads from Rionegro to the Coffee Region (Eje Cafetero)?
The road to Salento, Filandia and the rest of the Eje Cafetero is one of Colombia's most scenic drives, climbing to around 2,400 m with tight switchbacks, unmarked speed bumps on village approaches, and frequent landslides in the April–May and October–November wet seasons. Allow at least five hours for the 200 km to Salento. Avoid driving after dark — heavy fog rolls in and lorries often hog both lanes on the single-carriageway sections.
Which petrol does my hire car take, and what happens if I do not refill it before returning?
Most rentals run on Corriente (91-octane regular) or Extra (95-octane premium); diesel is rare in economy cars, so check the key tag. Rionegro and the road to Medellín are well served by Terpel, Primax and Biomax stations. The full-to-full policy is standard: return the tank full or pay a 20–30 per cent refuelling premium plus a fixed service fee. Photograph the dashboard gauge at both pickup and drop-off as proof.
I am 23 — will I be charged a young driver fee at Rionegro airport?
Yes. Almost every operator (Hertz, Avis, Localiza, Budget) adds a young-driver surcharge of US$10–15 (about £8–12) per day for anyone under 25, on top of the base rental rate. The minimum hire age is typically 21, and drivers under 23 are sometimes refused on larger SUVs. If you are travelling with someone aged 25 or older, add them as a second driver — the second-driver fee is usually cheaper than the young-driver surcharge.
