Riyadh Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Riyadh is one of the most practical ways to get around. Distances are large, attractions and business areas are spread out, and a private vehicle offers air-conditioned comfort in hot weather. UK travellers should plan for right-hand traffic, busy multi-lane roads, and stricter speed enforcement (including camera systems). Most rentals require a credit card for the deposit; check your insurance/excess, fuel policy (full-to-full is usually simplest), and any extra charges such as additional drivers, young driver fees, and cross-border restrictions. For airport arrivals, picking up at RUH is typically the quickest start; for longer stays or city-based itineraries, downtown branches may deliver better value.

King Khalid International Airport (RUH) – Terminals 1–5
Riyadh’s main airport and the most popular place to collect a hire car. Follow signs for ‘Car Rental’/‘Rent A Car’ in the arrivals areas; counters are usually located within or adjacent to terminal halls, with vehicles parked in nearby airport car parks. Pros: strong availability, convenient after landing, clear wayfinding. Cons: peak-time queues and slightly higher rates are common.
Olaya (Al Olaya District)
Popular for business hotels, offices and shopping areas. Pros: central for meetings and city stays, good taxi access if you collect later. Cons: heavy traffic at rush hour and limited parking in some streets/complexes.
Al Malaz
Convenient for residential areas and parks, often with easier street layouts than the busiest commercial zones. Pros: potentially smoother pick-up/return and less intense traffic than the main CBD at certain times. Cons: fewer premium vehicle options compared with airport locations; branch hours may be shorter.

Riyadh Car Hire FAQs: What UK Drivers Need to Know

Straight answers to common questions about driving in Riyadh, from Saher speed cameras to summer sandstorms and refuelling rules.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Riyadh with my UK photocard licence?
Yes. A 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is legally required and rental desks will not release a car without one. Carry your UK photocard licence, IDP, passport and a credit card in the main driver's name. Police checks are common at junctions, so keep the original documents to hand, not just photocopies.
How does the Saher system work, and how much are typical speeding fines?
Saher is Saudi Arabia's nationwide network of automatic number-plate cameras covering junctions, speed cameras and lane-discipline sensors. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h in built-up areas and up to 140 km/h on King Fahd Road. Fines start at SAR 300 for minor speeding and exceed SAR 2,000 for 50 km/h over the limit, charged to the rental company and passed on after your trip.
Is the basic insurance enough, or should I take the full-coverage upgrade?
The included Collision Damage Waiver leaves a typical excess of SAR 1,500–3,000 payable by you for any scratch, kerbed alloy or chipped windscreen, both common on Riyadh's high-speed ring roads. Upgrading to a Full Damage Waiver costs SAR 60–100 per day and reduces the excess to zero. Given the cost of a single replacement alloy or windscreen, the upgrade almost always pays for itself.
Is it safe to drive in Riyadh's summer heat, and what about sandstorms?
Daytime temperatures regularly top 45 °C from May to September, so a working air-conditioning system is non-negotiable and should be tested at pickup. The shamal, a north-westerly sandstorm, can drop visibility to a few metres within minutes; pull over, switch off the engine and wait it out rather than push on. Check tyre pressures weekly, as heat raises them above the cold-reading figure on the door-sticker.
What petrol should I use, and what is the refuelling policy?
Riyadh stations stock Petrol 91 and 95 RON; most rental cars run on 95, and the fuel-cap sticker confirms which. Diesel is available but far less common, so double-check the engine before filling. The standard policy is full-to-full: return the car with the same level shown on the handover form. Returning it short triggers a refuelling charge of 2–3 times the pump price plus a service fee.
