My UK photocard licence is enough for BVI, right? Do I actually need an International Driving Permit?

If you still hold a paper-only licence issued before 1998, or you have any medical endorsements, grab an IDP from the RAC or AA before you fly — it costs £5.50 and takes five minutes online, otherwise the counter staff can refuse the keys.

The BVI roads look tiny on Google Maps. Will a normal saloon cope, or do I really need a 4x4?
