UK Traveller Essentials
Road Town Car Hire Guide (British Virgin Islands)
Hiring a car in Road Town (Tortola) is one of the easiest ways to explore beaches, viewpoints and ferry ports on your own timetable, especially if you’re staying outside the immediate town centre. Roads are generally short but can be steep, narrow and busy at peak times, so a compact car or small SUV is often the most practical choice. For UK residents, note that driving is on the left, which feels familiar, but junction layouts, road edges and occasional limited lighting can still take some getting used to. Availability can tighten during busy travel weeks, and many suppliers prefer reservations in advance for automatics and larger vehicles.

Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS), Beef Island
The main airport for Tortola and the closest gateway to Road Town. Car hire is typically arranged with providers meeting you at the terminal or via nearby offices, then a short drive over the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge into Road Town. Pros: quickest start to your trip, good for late arrivals and early departures, easier to load luggage straight away. Cons: choice can be limited compared with larger destinations, queues can form when several flights arrive together, and airport-adjacent pick-up may include higher delivery/meet-and-greet fees.
Road Town Ferry Terminal Area (Wickhams Cay)
A convenient option if you’re arriving by ferry (e.g., via St Thomas) or staying near the waterfront. Pros: walkable from many central hotels and marinas, easy handover if you’re island-hopping. Cons: parking can be tight, traffic and one-way streets can slow pick-up and returns at busy times.
Central Road Town (Main Street & Government Area)
Suitable for travellers already based in town who want to hire for a day or two. Pros: easy access to shops for supplies and to compare nearby offices, often flexible for short hires. Cons: limited kerbside parking and congestion can make collections slower, and after-hours returns may be restricted.

The British Virgin Islands enjoy warm, sun-soaked weather year-round, and the coastal roads between Cane Garden Bay, Brewer's Bay and Long Bay are made for open-air motoring. A convertible lets you soak up the trade winds and turquoise sea views as you cruise. With light traffic and short hops between beaches, it is the most enjoyable way to explore Tortola's shoreline at a relaxed pace.

Tortola's interior is genuinely steep and twisting, with sudden gradients and the occasional rough stretch on routes towards Sky World or Sage Mountain. An SUV offers the ground clearance and pulling power needed to tackle these hills in comfort, plus excellent visibility on blind bends. Generous boot space easily swallows beach gear, snorkel kits and shopping from Road Town's harbour-front stores.

Road Town's historic core features narrow lanes, tight bends and limited parking near the ferry terminal and Main Street shops. A small hatchback slips effortlessly into compact bays and copes well with the stop-start traffic around Wickhams Cay. Fuel economy is a welcome bonus given the high petrol prices across the BVI, making it a sensible, budget-friendly choice for short urban stays.

Hiring a Car in the British Virgin Islands

Practical answers for UK drivers planning a self-drive holiday around Tortola and the BVI

My UK photocard licence is enough for BVI, right? Do I actually need an International Driving Permit?
Yes — your full UK photocard licence is accepted for stays up to three months, and you drive on the left, which feels like home. No IDP is legally required, but every major rental firm on Tortola (Hertz, Budget, D&D, Local) will still want to see a passport and a credit card in the driver's name. If you still hold a paper-only licence issued before 1998, or you have any medical endorsements, grab an IDP from the RAC or AA before you fly — it costs £5.50 and takes five minutes online, otherwise the counter staff can refuse the keys.
The BVI roads look tiny on Google Maps. Will a normal saloon cope, or do I really need a 4x4?
On Tortola the main routes around Road Town, East End and West End are sealed but steep, narrow and full of blind bends — a small SUV or Suzuki Jimny-style jeep is the local default and what most firms stock. A low-slung saloon will scrape on the Sage Mountain hill road and the unsurfaced tracks down to beaches like Smuggler's Cove or Long Bay, costing you a tyre or a sump. Book the smallest 4x4 you can; daily rates run US$55–90 versus US$45 for an economy saloon.
I'm 23 — will I actually be allowed to hire, and what is the 'young driver' fee likely to hit me with?
Most BVI rental firms set the minimum age at 21, with a US$10–25 per-day surcharge for under-25s on top of the base rate. A few budget operators (Local, D&D) won't rent to anyone under 25 at all, so book direct rather than through a UK broker that may fudge the policy. Hertz and Budget at Beef Island airport are more flexible. For a week-long hire in July or December, budget an extra £150–200 on top of the headline price — and take a higher-excess policy to protect that young-driver deposit.
The basic CDW looks cheap on the website. What's the damage excess, and is the full coverage worth it?
Standard Collision Damage Waiver in BVI usually carries a US$750–1,500 excess, and the third-party liability cap is often only US$25,000 — peanuts if you hit a local car or a wall on a blind bend. Take the Super CDW (drops excess to US$0–200) at US$15–25 a day, or pay the excess with a UK credit card that includes rental cover. Most Amex Platinum/Centurion and gold Visa/Mastercards do, but read the small print for Caribbean exclusions — BVI is usually fine, though the cover rarely extends to the rough beach tracks.
Petrol in the Caribbean must be cheap, right? Where do I actually fill up near Road Town?
Wrong — petrol in BVI is imported and among the priciest in the Eastern Caribbean, currently US$5.20–5.60 a US gallon (roughly £1.10 a litre). There are no 24-hour stations: Rubis in Road Town and the Sol pumps at Lower Estate and East End open roughly 06:00–20:00, and a few shut on Sundays. Most firms run a full-to-full policy, so top up at the Rubis at Wickham's Cay no more than ten minutes before you drop the keys at Beef Island — the airport itself has no petrol station.
