Saint John Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Saint John is a compact, coastal city in New Brunswick where a hire car can make your trip far easier—especially if you want to explore the Bay of Fundy coastline, nearby beaches, and regional towns without relying on limited public transport. Most visitors choose either airport pick-up for maximum convenience after landing, or downtown pick-up if they are staying centrally and prefer to avoid airport surcharges. For UK drivers, the transition is straightforward: Canada drives on the right, and vehicles are typically automatic—manual cars can be limited, so book early if you strongly prefer one.

Saint John Airport (YSJ) Car Rental Centre
The primary airport serving Saint John and the easiest place to start a road trip. Pros: best opening hours and flight-aligned service, straightforward pick-up/drop-off, and a wide choice of vehicle categories. Cons: airport facility fees and taxes may increase the total price, queues can form at peak arrival times, and inventory can tighten during summer and holiday periods.
Uptown Saint John (City Centre) Branches
Popular for travellers staying near the waterfront, Market Square, or central hotels. Pros: often lower add-on fees than the airport, easier to reach on foot from central accommodation, and convenient for short hires. Cons: shorter opening hours, fewer vehicle options (especially SUVs), and limited after-hours drop-off depending on the operator.
Saint John Transit & Commercial Corridor Locations
Some rental offices sit along main roads and retail areas on the way in/out of the centre. Pros: easier vehicle collection if you are already driving in from elsewhere, and sometimes better availability than the very centre. Cons: less walkable from tourist hotspots, may require a taxi/ride-share to reach, and can be less convenient for one-way returns.

Saint John's Maritime winters bring heavy snow, freezing temperatures and icy lanes that catch out unprepared vehicles. An all-wheel-drive SUV with healthy ground clearance copes confidently with steep city hills, slushy downtown streets and the run out to Irving Nature Park. Heated cabins and winter tyres make coastal touring considerably safer and more comfortable.

Summer brings crisp, mild weather to the Bay of Fundy, where dramatic coastal scenery unfolds around every bend. A convertible lets you soak up the sea air as you cruise the Fundy Trail Parkway or chase the highest tides at Hopewell Rocks. The open-top experience turns a coastal drive into a memorable Maritimes highlight.

Saint John's Uptown core is famously steep, with narrow cobbled lanes and limited on-street parking that challenge larger vehicles. A compact hatchback slips easily into small bays near the City Market and the Reversing Falls viewpoint while keeping fuel costs low. It is ideal for short hops to nearby highlights such as Irving Nature Park.

Why Choose Saint John Airport (YSJ) Pick-Up

Ideal after a flight—pick up your car shortly after landing and start driving immediately. Airport counters typically offer longer opening hours, clearer wayfinding, and a broader selection of vehicles (including family-sized SUVs). It is also the simplest option if you have luggage or are arriving late, though airport fees can make it slightly pricier overall.

Saint John Car Hire FAQs

Essential UK traveller advice on licences, winter driving, insurance, parking and wildlife in Saint John, New Brunswick

Can I use my UK driving licence to hire a car in Saint John, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your valid UK photocard driving licence lets you drive in New Brunswick for up to six months as a tourist, and no International Driving Permit is legally required. However, the main rental firms at Saint John Airport (YSJ) — Enterprise, Hertz, Avis and Budget — strongly recommend carrying a 1968 Geneva IDP because it speeds up the desk check and removes any ambiguity with newer UK licences. You must be at least 21, and drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of CAD $15–25 per day on top of the base rate.
Is winter driving around Saint John really that bad, and are winter tyres compulsory?
Don't underestimate it. From late November to April, temperatures regularly drop below −15 °C and the Bay of Fundy coast gets hit by heavy, wet snow squalls. Winter tyres are not yet mandatory across New Brunswick, but Enterprise and Budget fit them as standard between October and Easter at no extra cost — book early because supply at YSJ is limited. The Trans-Canada Highway is well gritted, but rural routes to the Fundy Trail and Irving Nature Park turn to black ice after dusk. Pack an ice scraper, shovel, blanket and a torch.
I've heard about moose collisions in New Brunswick — how worried should I be?
Genuinely worried, especially after dark. New Brunswick records 600–700 moose-vehicle collisions a year, the highest rate in Atlantic Canada, and most happen on rural Routes 1, 7 and 111 between Saint John and Fredericton during the autumn rut (September–October). Slow to 60 km/h on unsigned rural roads, keep main beams on and never swerve — brake hard in a straight line instead. The Loss Damage Waiver costs about CAD $20 per day extra but is well worth it: a single bull moose can write off a car and hit the CAD $50,000 mark.
Is the mandatory New Brunswick insurance enough, or should I buy extra cover?
The provincial minimum third-party liability of CAD $200,000 is included in every rental, but it is far too low by UK standards — a multi-car shunt on the highway can easily exceed it. Always upgrade to the full Collision Damage Waiver plus a CAD $2 million liability top-up; the bundle typically costs CAD $30–45 per day. Note that most UK credit cards exclude gravel, single-vehicle and animal-strike damage, so do not rely on your Monzo or Barclaycard policy. Photograph the car thoroughly at pickup and keep the timestamped report.
Are there any toll roads around Saint John, and how do I pay for parking in the city centre?
Almost none — New Brunswick has no tolls in the Saint John area at all. The only nearby toll is the CAD $50 Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island, four hours away. In Uptown Saint John, on-street parking costs CAD $1.50 per hour with a two-hour limit, paid at coin or card meters (Mon–Sat 9 am–6 pm). The Market Square car park is free on Sundays, and the Brunswick Square overflow is free after 6 pm. Avoid the pull-in bays near the Reversing Falls — they are tow-away zones, and signage is in English and French only.
