UK Traveller Essentials
Samos Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Renting a car in Samos is one of the easiest ways to explore the island beyond the main resorts—reaching quieter beaches, hillside villages, and viewpoints that are awkward by bus or taxi. Roads can be narrow and winding, so a compact car is often best; consider an automatic early if you prefer it, as availability can be limited. Expect manual transmissions to be most common. From the United Kingdom, your photocard driving licence is typically sufficient for Greece for short visits, but always check your provider’s requirements. To keep costs predictable, confirm the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually best), understand excess and deposits, and decide whether you want to reduce excess with additional cover. Take timestamped photos at pick-up and return, and ask how out-of-hours returns work if your flight is early.

Samos International Airport (SMI) – Aristarchos of Samos
The main arrival point for many UK travellers. Car rental counters are typically in or near the terminal, with vehicles collected from an adjacent car park. Advantages: immediate access after landing, strong availability in summer, and straightforward return before departure. Disadvantages: potential airport surcharges, queues on peak arrival days, and limited choice if you book late.
Pythagorio (Pythagoreio) Harbour & Resort Area
Popular for visitors staying by the waterfront and close to the airport. Pros: easy walk from many hotels, quick access to coastal roads and beach areas, and often flexible handovers by appointment. Cons: limited parking in busy periods, fewer vehicle categories than the airport, and shorter opening hours—confirm late returns in advance.
Vathy (Samos Town) – Port & Centre
Best if you’re based in the island’s administrative centre or arriving by ferry. Pros: convenient for ferry connections, good access to shops and services, and suitable if you don’t need a car every day. Cons: town traffic and one-way streets can be fiddly, parking can be scarce in summer, and pick-up may require a short walk to the office/vehicle.

Samos Car Hire: Essential FAQs for UK Drivers

Post-Brexit paperwork, mountain road warnings, and the truth about insurance excesses on the Greek island

Can I drive in Samos with just my UK photocard licence?
Post-Brexit, your UK photocard alone is not enough. You must carry both the licence and a 1968-format International Driving Permit (IDP), which costs £5.50 from the AA or RAC and is issued in minutes. Rental desks at Samos Airport (SMI) will refuse to release the car without it, and roadside police checks are routine between June and September. Drive on the right, opposite to the UK, and keep both documents on your person; failure to produce the IDP on request can trigger an on-the-spot fine of €200 or vehicle impoundment.
Are the mountain roads in Samos safe for first-time visitors?
The 50-km link from Pythagorion to Karlovasi cuts across the island's central Mount Ampelos massif on a well-paved but relentlessly twisting route. Allow 1.5 hours for what looks like an hour on the map: hairpins, gradients up to 12% and unprotected drops are constant. Drive in daylight only, stay below 60 km/h in lower gears, and watch for free-roaming goats, donkeys and the occasional tortoise. Avoid the route after heavy rain, as drainage is poor and the asphalt turns slippery within minutes. Fuel up before setting off; the only mountain petrol station is in Marathokampos.
Can I take the hire car on the ferry to Turkey (Kusadasi)?
No, every major rental firm in Samos explicitly forbids taking the car across the Aegean, even for a day trip. The moment the vehicle is driven onto a ferry, CDW, theft cover and roadside assistance lapse, leaving you liable for the full value of the car in the event of damage. Samos–Kusadasi ferries (operated by Sky Marine, 1 hour, €15-25 foot passenger) do not even carry cars on most crossings. Drop the car in Pythagorion's long-stay car park (€5/day) and continue on foot; the Turkish side has its own rental desks if needed.
I'm 23, how much extra will I pay as a young driver?
Most suppliers in Samos, including the chains at the airport and local firms such as Thanos and Goldcar, apply a young driver surcharge of €8-15 per day for renters aged 21-24, payable locally on top of the pre-booked rate. Under-21s are usually refused outright, regardless of licence held. The fee can nearly double the cost of a week-long small-car rental, so book directly with a local agency rather than a broker if you want to negotiate; some will waive the surcharge in low season (November to March) or cap it at three days. Senior drivers (70+) face no extra fee but may be asked for a recent medical letter.
Is the basic insurance enough, or should I buy the full coverage?
The mandatory third-party cover is the bare minimum, but the standard Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) carries an excess of €800-1,500, easily exceeded by a single kerbed alloy in the narrow lanes of Kokkari or Vathy. The Super CDW or zero-excess upgrade adds €10-18 per day and brings glass, tyres, underside and roof under the same umbrella, which Greek basic policies exclude. Note that most UK credit-card insurance policies exclude Greek islands or require a separate activation call; read the small print before declining the upgrade. Theft cover is cheap (€3-5/day) and worth taking, as break-ins in beach car parks are not unheard of in July and August.
