Sarajevo Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Hiring a car in Sarajevo is a practical way to reach mountain scenery, historic towns, and rural areas where public transport can be limited or slow. For UK travellers, the main benefits are flexibility for day trips (such as to Mostar, Konjic, or the Olympic mountains) and easier luggage handling compared with buses or shared transfers. The trade-offs are city driving pressures (tight streets, limited parking, and peak-hour congestion) and the need to pay close attention to insurance excess, fuel policies, and cross-border restrictions if you plan to visit nearby countries. Pick-up is simplest at Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) for immediate onward travel, while city locations can suit travellers staying centrally who want to avoid airport surcharges or do not need a car every day.

Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) – Arrivals Car Rental Desks
The most popular pick-up point for UK arrivals. Rental desks are typically located in or near the arrivals area with vehicles collected from the airport car park. Pros: convenient after landing, longer opening hours, wider fleet choice, easy return before departure. Cons: can be slightly pricier, queues at busy times, and peak-season availability may be tighter without pre-booking.
Baščaršija / Old Town (Stari Grad) Area Offices
Central for sightseeing and hotels, but access can involve narrow streets and limited loading space. Pros: ideal if you only want a car for day trips after settling in; walkable pick-up. Cons: parking constraints and possible delivery/collection surcharges; driving out can be slow during busy periods.
Marijin Dvor (Business District) Pick-up Points
A convenient, modern area with broader roads and better parking options than the Old Town. Pros: easier vehicle handover, good tram links, generally simpler navigation when leaving the city. Cons: still subject to traffic at peak times and parking costs can add up near shopping centres and offices.

Sarajevo's old town features narrow cobbled streets and tight parking around Baščaršija and the Latin Bridge. A small hatchback slips through with ease, sips fuel on short city loops, and keeps kerbside stress to a minimum. It's also the most affordable way to explore the historic centre.

The Dinaric Alps wrap Sarajevo with steep climbs, hairpin bends, and snow-dusted slopes from December through March. An SUV with higher clearance, all-wheel drive, and surefooted grip handles ski runs to Jahorina or Bjelašnica, plus rough mountain lanes leading to the highland village of Lukomir, with real confidence.

Comfort for Mostar & Beyond

Day trips to Mostar, Konjic, or Travnik cover long stretches of motorway and winding rural roads. A medium saloon balances ample boot space for souvenirs and luggage, solid fuel efficiency on the M17, plus steady comfort across Bosnia's varied terrain. It's the all-rounder for couples or small families exploring further afield.

Fast Getaway From Sarajevo Airport (SJJ)

Airport pick-up suits UK travellers landing late, travelling with luggage, or heading straight out of the city. You’ll usually find more vehicle choice, clearer return procedures, and longer opening hours than smaller city branches. It can cost a little more, but the convenience and time saved can outweigh the difference—especially if you plan to drive onward immediately.

Sarajevo Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers on driving rules, road tolls, winter tyres and cross-border trips in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Can I drive in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your full UK photocard licence is accepted on its own for stays up to three months — no IDP is legally required, though some Sarajevo rental desks still ask to see one, so carry it to be safe. You must be at least 21 with one year of licence held; drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly €7–€10 per day. An official translation is not needed because the licence uses the Latin alphabet.
How does the Sarajevo bypass toll work, and do I need to buy a TAG device?
The Kakanj–Sarajevo–Ljubuški motorway is paid at a few booths in cash (KM or euros) or by card. A TAG electronic transponder is not mandatory and there is no vignette system, so casual day-trippers do not need to pre-buy one. Most urban roads, including the centar ring road, are toll-free; only the A1 motorway south towards Mostar and the coast charges.
What is the real state of the roads around Sarajevo in winter, and are winter tyres compulsory?
From mid-November to mid-April winter equipment is legally required: tyres must carry the M+S symbol with at least 3 mm tread, and you must carry snow chains in the boot when a snowplough sign is shown. The Mt Bjelašnica and Mt Jahorina passes frequently close overnight and the asphalt is potholed and unsurfaced on minor roads, so a small or mid-size SUV is far more comfortable than a low saloon. Expect ice on the descent into Sarajevo before 09:00 even in March.
Can I take a hire car from Sarajevo across the border into Croatia, Montenegro or Serbia, and what does it cost?
Most Sarajevo rental firms (Sixt, Europcar, local agencies) allow cross-border trips to Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia, but you must declare it at the desk and buy the green card extension, typically €8–€15 per day. Vehicles are usually not permitted into Kosovo or North Macedonia without written permission. Green border crossings at Bijača (Croatia) and Vardište (Serbia) are quick; allow 30–60 minutes at peak weekends.
Where do I park in central Sarajevo, and how much will it cost per hour?
The old Baščaršija is largely pedestrianised, so park in the Sarajevo City Center (SCC) underground at around 1.5 KM (£0.70) per hour or the BBI Centar garage at 2 KM. Street parking in the centre is zoned and paid via SMS or the BH Parking app between 07:00 and 21:00, Monday to Saturday, at 1 KM/hour. Free white zones exist only on the outskirts, e.g. around Ilidža, and a small mistake in the old town often means a 40 KM clamping fee.
