UK Travellers
Segovia Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up & What To Expect
Segovia is compact and walkable, but a hire car is particularly convenient if you want to explore beyond the aqueduct and old town—think the Guadarrama mountains, nearby villages, wineries and day trips across Castilla y León. For UK travellers, the biggest advantage is flexibility: you can set your own schedule and reach places with limited public transport. The trade-offs are that historic-centre driving can be tight, parking is easier on the edges of town, and many visitors will collect a car in Madrid (especially at the airport) and drive to Segovia. Expect manual cars to be most common; automatics are limited and should be booked early. Check fuel policy ("full-to-full" is usually simplest), be clear on toll routes if you head towards Madrid, and review insurance/excess and deposit requirements before you arrive.
Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) – Car Rental Hubs (T1/T4)
The most common arrival point for UK travellers heading to Segovia. Major rental companies operate at Madrid–Barajas with large fleets and longer opening hours. From the airport, Segovia is typically around 1–1.5 hours’ drive depending on route and traffic. Pros: widest choice of vehicles (including automatics and larger cars), competitive pricing due to competition, and easy one-stop collection after your flight. Cons: deposits can be higher, peak-time queues are possible, and city-bound traffic can slow the first part of the journey. Navigation tip: follow in-airport signs for “Car Rental/Alquiler de coches”; many desks are in terminals with vehicles in nearby car parks, or a short shuttle depending on provider.
Segovia AVE (Guiomar) Station Area
A practical pick-up point if you arrive by high-speed rail from Madrid. Pros: convenient for rail travellers, avoids airport traffic, and can be easier than driving out of central Madrid. Cons: smaller fleet than the airport, limited opening hours, and fewer automatic options—booking ahead is important.
Segovia Historic Centre Edge (Around Plaza Artillería/Aqueduct Area)
Handy for collecting a car after a day or two on foot. Pros: close to major sights and hotels, good for starting a countryside loop without backtracking. Cons: narrow streets, restricted-access zones in parts of the centre, and parking can be limited—confirm where the handover occurs and where you can legally stop.

Segovia Car Hire FAQs

Practical driving tips for travellers hiring a car in Segovia, Spain

Can I drive in Segovia with just my UK photocard licence?
Yes. Your valid UK photocard licence is recognised in Spain for short tourist stays, so you do not need an International Driving Permit. Carry the paper counterpart or a DVLA share code just in case a Guardia Civil officer asks. Minimum rental age is usually 21, and drivers under 25 typically pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly €15-€25 per day, which is why checking the quote twice is worth it.
Are there tolls on the drive from Madrid to Segovia?
No. The AP-61 motorway between Madrid and Segovia has been toll-free since 2012, so you can use the 90 km route without paying a penny. Watch for variable speed limits and overhead gantries near the AP-6 and SG-20 junctions, where average-speed cameras are common. Stick to 120 km/h on the motorway and 90 km/h on standard roads unless signed otherwise.
Where can I park near the Aqueduct, and is it free?
Free parking is very limited inside the UNESCO old town. Your best bet is the underground car park beneath the Aqueduct (Calle del Gobernador Fernández Jiménez) at about €1.80-€2.20 per hour, or the surface lot at Paseo de la琳娜 for a similar price. Blue zone (Zona Azul) street parking is paid Monday to Saturday, 10:00-14:00 and 16:00-20:00, payable by the ORA app or meter. Do not park on the white-tiled streets near the Cathedral; they are pedestrianised and fines start at €90.
Do I need winter tyres or snow chains driving in winter?
Chains or winter-equivalent tyres are only legally mandatory on the N-6 and mountain passes such as the Puerto de Navacerrada or Cotos when the Guardia Civil posts a snow sign. From late November to March, carry a pair of chains that fit your tyres and know how to fit them. Segovia itself sits at 1,000 m and rarely gets gridlocked, but a sudden frost can black-ice the cobbled approach to the Alcázar.
What insurance should I accept when hiring a car in Spain?
Your rental will always include third-party liability, but this is capped and poor value. Add full collision damage waiver (CDW) plus theft protection, which removes the typical €1,000-€1,500 excess. For full peace of mind, take the Super Cover or Zero Excess upgrade at €10-€18 a day. Note that a UK credit-card “free rental insurance” is usually secondary and may exclude tyres, windscreen and underbody damage common on the stone tracks around the Sierra.
