Sharjah Car Hire Guide: Locations, Pros & Cons, And Local Tips
Hiring a car in Sharjah is one of the most convenient ways to explore the emirate’s museums, waterfronts and desert edges, and to reach neighbouring Dubai or Ajman on your own timetable. Roads are generally modern and well signposted, parking is widely available, and air conditioning is essential year-round. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember that the UAE drives on the right; allow a short adjustment period, especially at roundabouts and multi-lane junctions. Prices can be very competitive compared with relying on ride-hailing for multiple daily stops, but value depends on choosing the right fuel policy, understanding deposits and excess, and picking a collection point that matches your itinerary.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) – Car Rental Centre
Best for immediate onward travel on arrival. Follow signs for ‘Car Rental’ in the arrivals area; most major brands and local operators have desks on-site or nearby. Expect quicker access to highways towards Sharjah city, Ajman and Dubai, but allow extra time at peak arrival waves for paperwork and vehicle collection.
Al Majaz (Khalid Lagoon / Al Majaz Waterfront)
Pros: Central for hotels, family attractions and the corniche; easy to start local driving without airport traffic; useful if you arrive by taxi/coach and want a later pick-up. Cons: Parking and congestion can be heavier in evenings and weekends; some branches may have shorter opening hours than the airport.
Al Khan (Near Sharjah Aquarium / Al Khan Beach)
Pros: Convenient for beach stays and quick access to Al Taawun and the Dubai border area; often calmer than the busiest city-centre streets. Cons: Limited branch density compared with central districts; you may need a taxi to reach the office if you are not staying nearby.

A roomy SUV is ideal for heading east towards Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and the Hajar mountain wadi drives, where road surfaces can be rougher. Higher ride height clears loose gravel on desert access tracks, while climate control and a sizeable boot handle family luggage, picnic gear and beach kit with ease.

Sharjah's old souqs, the Blue Souk and central shopping districts reward a compact hatchback for squeezing through tighter lanes and securing parking near heritage sites. Air conditioned, light on fuel and easy to manoeuvre in Dubai-bound traffic, it's a sensible choice for short urban days and shopping runs.

Why Choose Sharjah Airport (SHJ) Pick-Up

Airport pick-up is ideal if you want to start driving straight after landing, especially for late arrivals or early departures. You typically get wider vehicle choice, longer opening hours, and simpler one-stop logistics (counter, keys, and quick access to main roads). It can cost a little more than some city branches, and queues can occur at busy arrival times—booking in advance and having your UK driving licence, passport, and payment card ready helps.

Platform Analysis

"Sharjah Airport terminal is the dominant 24/7 pick-up point, hosting 9 major brands (Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, Dollar, Thrifty, Sayara, Maximum, Autolease). Airport kiosks are chosen for flight-arrival convenience and 24-hour availability."

Booking Patterns

"SUVs/4x4 (Land Cruiser, Prado, Hilux) dominate Sharjah bookings, driven by East-Coast and Mleiha desert trips. Long-term monthly leases and 7-seater family SUVs are rising, while hybrid/EV demand is growing in 2025–26."

Customer Pain Points

"Around 40% of Sharjah renters report confusion over CDW versus SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) excess, and Salik/toll plus traffic-fine surcharges are the most common post-rental billing complaints."

Sharjah Car Hire: UK Driver FAQs

Licences, tolls, summer driving and cross-border trips to Oman explained

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for my UK licence in Sharjah?
Yes, every time. UK photocard licence holders must carry a 1968 IDP (the standard booklet, not the 1949 version) alongside their UK licence to rent and drive in Sharjah. Order it from the AA (£5.50) or RAC before flying — turnaround is around 1-2 weeks, or same-day at AA travel shops. The IDP is a translation only and is non-negotiable at every rental desk; a UK licence alone will see you turned away at the counter. For short tourist trips the IDP is enough, but anyone taking UAE residency must exchange their UK licence for a local one at the RTA or Sharjah driving licence centre.
I'm used to driving on the left in the UK — how quickly will I adapt in Sharjah?
Traffic in Sharjah drives on the right and most rental cars are left-hand drive, so the adjustment is significant. Take extra care at roundabouts (give way to traffic already on the roundabout, not the left), when overtaking, and at motorway slip roads — UK drivers frequently drift across lanes in the first 48 hours. Avoid night driving until you are settled, keep your speed down in the first day, and use the sat-nav lane guidance religiously. Many rental firms offer automatic-only cars as standard, which removes the gear-change complication but not the lane-positioning one.
Will I be hit with Salik tolls in Sharjah?
Sharjah itself has no toll gates, but every time you cross into Dubai you pass through a Salik gate (AED 4 per crossing, roughly £0.85). Most rental cars come with a Salik tag fitted; the rental company will bill your card AED 4 plus an admin fee of AED 2-3 per gate, usually within 48 hours. A return Dubai day trip via Sheikh Zayed Road can trigger 4 crossings — that's AED 16-20. Plan your route, use the Al Qudra or Hatta road alternatives, or accept it as part of Dubai's traffic-management cost.
Can I really drive in the UAE summer heat without issues?
June to September regularly hits 42-45°C in Sharjah, and cabin temperatures in parked cars can exceed 60°C. Always pre-cool the cabin before driving, keep at least a quarter tank of fuel (petrol stations are frequent, but air-con is fuel-hungry), and carry extra drinking water. The bigger driving danger is the Shamal — sand and dust storms between November and March — when visibility can drop below 100 metres: pull off the road, switch off the engine, and wait it out. Heat also raises tyre-blowout risk, so check pressures weekly and inspect tyres before any long motorway run.
I'm 23 — can I rent a car, and will there be an extra charge?
Most major rental firms in Sharjah (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Europcar) rent to drivers aged 21 and over, with a young driver surcharge of AED 15-30 per day (about £3-£6.50) for under-25s. Luxury, sports and large 4x4 categories usually require 25+. Some local firms advertise cheaper rates for under-21s but check the insurance excess carefully — it can exceed AED 5,000, and they may not include collision damage waiver. Book directly with an international brand for clearer T&Cs and 24-hour roadside support across the UAE, including breakdowns in the desert.
Can I take a rental car from Sharjah into Oman?
Cross-border to Oman is permitted but you must arrange GCC insurance in advance (around AED 150-300 for 7 days) and notify the rental company — driving into Musandam without it voids your cover completely. Most firms freely allow drives to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the other northern emirates with no extra fee or paperwork. The Musandam oases of Khasab and Dibba are popular day trips from Sharjah, but plan fuel stops — petrol stations thin out after the UAE border crossing. Never attempt Saudi Arabia on a standard UAE rental.
