Sitka Car Hire Guide: Airport And Downtown Pick-Up
Hiring a car in Sitka can be a practical choice if you want flexibility for shopping runs, visiting trailheads and viewpoints, or reaching accommodation outside the most walkable area. Sitka is compact, but taxis can be limited and ride-hailing may be inconsistent; a rental car helps you move on your own timetable. Do note that Sitka is on Baranof Island and is not connected by road to the rest of Alaska, so driving is mainly for local journeys rather than long-distance road trips. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember you will be driving on the right, most signage and speeds are in miles, and automatics are common.
Avis
Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport (SIT) – On-Site/Adjacent Car Rental Counters
The easiest pick-up point after landing. Head to the terminal arrivals area and follow signs for car rental; vehicles are typically collected from a nearby parking area. Advantages: quickest start to your trip, better for late arrivals, and easier luggage handling. Disadvantages: airport-location surcharges may apply, and selection can be limited in peak periods—reserve early, especially for SUVs in winter and shoulder seasons.
Harbourfront & Lincoln Street Area (Central Sitka)
Convenient if you are arriving by cruise or staying centrally and only need a car for part of your visit. Pros: you can walk to pick-up from many hotels, avoid some airport fees, and it is simple to return the car before a flight or excursion. Cons: shorter opening hours are common, limited fleet sizes, and availability can be tight when cruise ships are in port—plan collection/return times carefully.
Accommodation Pick-Up Near Sitka National Historical Park / Halibut Point Road Corridor
Useful for travellers staying slightly outside the main centre who want to minimise backtracking. Pros: closer to some lodges and quieter areas, potentially faster access to local roads and trailheads. Cons: fewer walk-in options, you may still need a taxi to reach the office, and returns can be less flexible outside standard hours—confirm out-of-hours procedures in advance.

Sitka experiences over 200 rainy days each year, with moss-slicked tarmac and frequent drizzle. A mid-size SUV offers all-wheel drive traction, elevated visibility on winding coastal routes, and ample boot space for waterproof gear and shopping. Higher ground clearance helps navigate occasional potholes and wet gravel.

Beyond Sitka's town limits, Tongass National Forest offers gravel tracks leading to trailheads, hot springs, and remote fishing spots. A pickup truck carries kayaks, rods, and camping kit in the bed, while four-wheel drive tackles muddy ruts and steep forest inclines. Roofline remains low for ferry boarding.

Sitka's compact downtown features narrow streets and limited parking near the harbour and cathedral. A small hatchback slips into tight bays, returns excellent fuel economy on short hops between attractions like the National Historical Park and raptor centre, and feels reassuringly agile in misty conditions.

Airport Pick-Up
Downtown Pick-Up

Fastest Start: Collect At Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport (SIT)

Ideal for flight arrivals, heavier luggage, and time-sensitive plans. Airport pick-up usually offers the smoothest handover process and better alignment with arrival times, though it can include airport surcharges—compare the total price, not just the headline daily rate.

Sitka Car Hire: Common Questions Answered

Practical advice for British travellers on rain, wildlife and the realities of driving on Baranof Island, Alaska

Do I really need a hire car in Sitka, or can I walk everywhere?
Sitka's compact town centre is walkable, but most headline sights (Mt Edgecumbe, Herring Cove, Halibut Point) sit 10–25 minutes' drive away. There is no public bus, no Uber, and only a handful of taxis. If you're here for two nights and sticking to the harbourfront and the National Historical Park, you can manage without a car. For three nights or longer, a hire car is by far the most flexible option. Expect £75–£110 per day in peak season. There are only three rental desks at Sitka Airport, so book at least six weeks ahead in summer.
Will I actually see bears on the road in Sitka?
Yes — brown bears are a genuine hazard on Sitka's roads, especially between May and September. They frequent Herring Cove, Sawmill Creek Road, the Mt Edgecumbe track, and any salmon-bearing stream. Drive slowly at dawn and dusk, scan the verges before rounding bends, and never stop to feed or photograph them from the car. If a bear is on the road, stop, switch off the engine, and wait — do not sound the horn. Bear spray is available from outdoor shops downtown, and the rental desk can advise on routes to avoid during the sockeye run.
Do I need an International Driving Permit as a British visitor?
Technically no — Alaska accepts your UK photocard licence for stays under 90 days. In practice, though, most major rental firms (Hertz, Avis, Budget) will refuse to hand over the keys without an IDP, citing corporate policy. Get one before you fly: it costs £5.50 from the AA, takes ten minutes online, and is valid for 12 months. You'll also need a credit card in your own name. The minimum hire age is 21, and drivers under 25 will be hit with a 'young renter' surcharge of roughly £25–£35 per day.
Why is petrol so expensive, and what's the fuel policy?
All fuel on Baranof Island is barged in, so expect to pay 50–80p more per litre than on the US mainland — currently around £1.45–£1.55 per litre. There is just one main petrol station in town, next to the airport, and it closes at 21:00. Most rental firms operate a full-to-full policy: collect the car full, return it full. There is no refund for leftover fuel, and refuelling charges can run to £3.50 per litre plus a service fee. Fill up at the airport station on your way back, not at the half-empty pumps further out.
How bad is the rain, and what should I watch out for on the road?
Sitka gets around 2,000 mm of rain a year — that's roughly five times the UK average — with October the wettest month. The roads are well-drained tarmac but turn slick within minutes of a downpour. Use dipped headlights whenever the wipers are on, double your stopping distance, and watch for hydroplaning on the sweeping curves of Sawmill Creek Road. Winter tyres are not legally required; all-season tyres are fitted as standard. Snow is rare at sea level, but the higher sections of Halibut Point Road can ice up between November and March.
Can I drive off-road or pop over to Juneau for the day?
No — and this catches out a lot of first-time visitors. Sitka sits on Baranof Island, and there is no road connection to mainland Alaska or any other town. The only ways out are by air (a one-hour flight to Juneau or Anchorage) or the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, which runs a few times a week. Off-road driving is forbidden on most tracks and strictly enforced at Salmon Lake and Redoubt Lake. Stick to the marked road network, watch for logging trucks on the industrial side, and don't be tempted by the 'shortcuts' on the forest service maps.
