Compare great-value options for airport or downtown pick-up, with straightforward advice on insurance, fuel policies, deposits, and driving in Northern Ontario for travellers from the United Kingdom.

Updated Guidance for Northern Ontario
Sudbury Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Sudbury is one of the easiest ways to explore Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario at your own pace, especially if you’re arriving by air, travelling with luggage, or planning day trips to lakes, trails and surrounding towns. Public transport is limited for many visitor itineraries, and distances between attractions can be significant, making a car particularly convenient. UK travellers can usually drive on a full UK photocard licence; ensure your name matches your booking, and bring a credit card for the security deposit. In winter (typically November to March), allow extra time, expect snow-covered roads, and consider an SUV for ground clearance—winter tyres are common on fleets but not guaranteed, so confirm at booking. Watch for common cost add-ons such as young driver surcharges (if applicable), one-way fees, extra driver charges, and higher excesses unless you take additional cover.
Avis

Enterprise
Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB) Car Rental Area
Best for: quick pick-up straight after landing and easy returns. Navigation: follow terminal signs for "Car Rental"/"Ground Transportation"—counters are typically located inside the terminal with vehicles a short walk away. Pros: convenient hours, good availability for late arrivals, simple return procedure. Cons: prices can be higher than off-airport locations and queues can build around peak flight times.
Sudbury City Centre (Downtown Core)
Pros: often better value than airport counters and useful if you’re staying centrally. Cons: shorter opening hours and you may need a taxi/ride-share to collect the car if arriving with heavy luggage or outside business hours.
New Sudbury (Lasalle Boulevard / Retail Corridor)
Pros: convenient for visitors staying in hotel and shopping areas, with easier parking and quicker pick-up than the airport at busy times. Cons: less ideal without a lift to the branch; stock can be limited for speciality vehicles during peak weekends.

Long summer days open up Sudbury's countless lakes, gravel forestry roads and remote campgrounds around Killarney Provincial Park and Manitoulin Island. A pickup truck copes with rough tracks comfortably, carries canoes, kayaks and fishing gear in the load bed, and offers raised visibility for long bush drives.

Why Choose Airport Pick-up at Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB)

Airport pick-up suits UK travellers arriving on tight schedules or with luggage: you can collect the car immediately after landing, benefit from reliable availability around flight times, and return the vehicle quickly at the end of your trip. It’s also a strong option in winter when you may prefer minimal transfers. The trade-off is that airport pricing can be higher, and add-ons (such as upgrades and extra cover) may be promoted at the counter—review your inclusions and fuel policy in advance to avoid surprises.

Sudbury Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Essential advice on licences, winter roads, moose and fuel for self-driving in Northern Ontario

Can I use my UK driving licence in Sudbury, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your full UK photocard licence is valid for visits of up to 6 months and an IDP is not legally required. However, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and Budget at Sudbury Airport (YSB) routinely ask for an IDP as a translation backup, and you can be turned away at the desk without one. Take both documents and a credit card in the main driver's name; the card must be presented physically, not via Apple Pay.
Will I really need winter tyres between November and April?
Honestly, yes. Sudbury sits in Northern Ontario where daytime temperatures regularly sit below -10°C from December to March, and black ice forms on the unploughed back roads to Killarney Provincial Park. Winter tyres are not legally mandatory in Ontario as they are in neighbouring Quebec, but rental companies charge roughly CAD 8-12 per day for a winter set, and the grip difference is dramatic. Skipping them is a false economy on a week-long trip.
How dangerous are moose on the roads around Sudbury?
Genuinely the biggest single risk. Highway 17 and the route north to Manitoulin Island see over 600 moose-vehicle collisions a year in Ontario, and the Sudbury region is a hotspot. Collisions peak at dawn and dusk, especially in May-June and October. Use high beams on rural stretches, scan the verges constantly, and if you spot one moose, expect a second to follow. A strike will write off a saloon car, so check the rental includes animal collision cover.
Why do the speed limits feel so high, and how strictly are they enforced?
Limits are posted in km/h, not mph, which catches out many UK drivers. Highway 17 runs at 90 km/h (about 56 mph) and urban Sudbury sits at 50 km/h. Ontario Provincial Police run unmarked cars and use aerial speed enforcement; fines start at CAD 85 for 10 km/h over and rise sharply above 30 km/h. A single speeding ticket on a 7-day rental can easily exceed the daily hire rate.
I'm 23 — will I be charged a young driver surcharge?
Almost certainly. Most major firms require the main driver to be at least 21 and add a 'young renter fee' of CAD 20-30 per day for under-25s. Some, including National and Sixt, will not rent to under-21s at all, even with a UK licence. The fee applies per day of the rental, so a week can add CAD 200 to your bill. Booking through a UK broker such as Auto Europe sometimes reduces or waives the surcharge.
Are there fuel stations between Sudbury and the more remote parks?
Spacing matters far more than price. Petrol is around CAD 1.40-1.55 per litre, broadly comparable to £1.05-£1.20 per litre in the UK, but between Sudbury and Chapleau or White River you can drive 80-100 km between services, and many pumps close by 21:00 outside town. Fill up before leaving the city, keep at least a quarter tank whenever you pass a station, and pay at the pump with a contactless card before you drive off.
