Takamatsu Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Takamatsu is a convenient way to reach Kagawa’s coastal towns, viewpoints and rural attractions that are slower to access by public transport. It is particularly useful for flexible day trips across Shikoku and for travellers carrying bags or travelling in small groups. Expect left-hand traffic (as in the UK) but note Japanese road signs, narrow residential streets and frequent paid parking in central Takamatsu. For most UK licence holders, an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention is typically required in Japan alongside your UK photocard licence and passport—check your eligibility before travel. Budget for expressway tolls (often paid via ETC), fuel costs, and potential one-way fees if you return in a different city.

Takamatsu Airport (TAK) Car Rental Area
Best for straightforward arrival-to-car transitions. After landing, follow signs for car hire; some providers are on-site while others use quick shuttle transfers to nearby depots. Pros: widest choice of cars, convenient for early starts and onward driving. Cons: may be slightly pricier at peak times; you will be driving immediately after a flight.
Takamatsu Station Area (JR Takamatsu)
Ideal if you arrive by rail and want to collect a car after settling in. Pros: walkable from hotels, easy to pair with a train/ferry arrival. Cons: city traffic and paid parking can be awkward; some branches have shorter hours and fewer vehicle categories.
Kotoden Kawaramachi Area (Central Shopping District)
Convenient for travellers staying in central Takamatsu and collecting the car later in the trip. Pros: central location near shops and accommodation. Cons: tight streets and one-way systems; collecting during busy periods can be slower, and parking nearby is usually paid.

Takamatsu's older shopping streets and the Ritsurin Garden car park can be tight for longer vehicles. A compact runabout slips into kerbside bays with no fuss, returns excellent fuel economy along the flat coastal roads to Yashima, and feels at home in stop-start traffic. Travellers used to narrow British city lanes will appreciate the light steering.

Beyond the coastal plain, Shikoku's interior rises quickly into twisting roads towards the Iya Valley, Kotohira and the famous vine bridges. A compact SUV offers a higher driving position, surer grip on damp mountain hairpins and space for hiking kit. The raised clearance also copes with the odd unpaved section near rural onsen villages.

A full Shikoku loop with three or four passengers and their suitcases quickly overwhelms an ordinary saloon. A people-carrier keeps everyone comfortable on the longer motorway stretches to Matsuyama, handles the ferry queues over to Shodoshima with room to spare, and the sliding doors are a real blessing in busy supermarket car parks.

Takamatsu Car Hire & Self-Drive FAQs

Practical answers for UK drivers planning to explore Shikoku, the Seto Inland Sea and Kagawa by hire car

Can I use my UK driving licence in Takamatsu, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, plus your UK photocard licence and passport. Get the IDP from a UK Post Office for £5.50 before you fly, as it cannot be obtained in Japan. The IDP is valid for 12 months. Without it, no rental desk in Takamatsu (Toyota Rent a Car, Times, Nippon, Orix at JR Takamatsu Station or the airport) will release a vehicle, and driving on a UK licence alone is a criminal offence.
Japan drives on the left like the UK, so will it really feel familiar?
The left-hand driving is the easy bit, but expect surprises. Indicator and wiper stalks are reversed on most Japanese cars, urban roads in Takamatsu are narrow with no kerbs, and cyclists frequently ride on pavements and pedestrian crossings. Give way at unmarked junctions to the vehicle on your left, and never turn left on a red light, it is forbidden. Speed limits are low: 40-50 km/h in the city, 60 km/h on rural roads, 80 km/h on the Takamatsu Expressway.
How do expressway tolls work, and is the ETC card worth it for the Seto Ohashi Bridge?
Tolls are steep, around ¥5,000 (£26) just to cross the Great Seto Bridge to Okayama one way. Ask your rental company for an ETC card at pick-up (about ¥330 per day), which gives automatic deduction at unmanned gates and unlocks the Shikoku Expressway Pass: ¥4,500 for two days of unlimited tolls across Shikoku. Without ETC you must use the green 'general' lane and pay cash in yen, no foreign cards accepted at toll booths.
What does fuel cost and are petrol stations easy to find on the Shikoku coast?
Regular unleaded (レギュラー, red pump) is around ¥170 per litre (£0.90). Most Takamatsu stations are self-service (セルフ); look for ENEOS, Idemitsu or Cosmo near Route 11 and the expressway interchanges. Return the car with a full tank or face a ¥2,000-3,000 refuelling fee plus inflated per-litre charges. Rural stretches towards Cape Sata or the Iya Valley have very few stations open after 19:00 and almost none on Sundays, so refuel before leaving the city.
Where can I actually park in central Takamatsu, and what will it cost?
Street parking is essentially banned in the city centre and traffic wardens are ruthless; a yellow ticket means a ¥15,000 (£80) fine and points. Use coin car parks (コインパーキング) such as Times or Repark, costing ¥200-400 per hour daytime, often capped at ¥800-1,200 overnight. Ritsurin Garden, Sunport and Takamatsu Symbol Tower all have underground car parks at around ¥300 per hour. Many hotels charge an extra ¥1,500 per night for parking, confirm before booking.
Do I need extra insurance, or is the basic CDW enough for a week in Kagawa?
The basic Compulsory Insurance is included but leaves you with an excess of up to ¥100,000 (£530) for damage and ¥50,000 NOC (Non-Operation Charge) if the car is off-road for repairs. Pay the extra ¥1,100-1,650 per day for the 'Anshin' or 'Safety' package which waives both. UK credit card hire-car cover is rarely accepted by Japanese rental firms, so do not rely on it. Photograph every panel and the wheel rims at pick-up, scratches are inspected meticulously on return.
