UK-Friendly Advice
Taormina Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Taormina is a brilliant base for exploring eastern Sicily, but the historic centre is compact, hilly and often affected by restricted traffic (ZTL) and limited parking. Hiring a car is most convenient if you plan day trips to Mount Etna, Alcantara Gorge, Syracuse/Ortigia, Noto or beaches further afield. Many visitors collect a car at Catania–Fontanarossa Airport (the nearest major airport) for wider choice and sharper pricing, then use it mainly for excursions rather than driving inside central Taormina. For UK travellers, note that Italy drives on the right; most cars are manual, and automatics can cost more and sell out quickly. Always check the fuel policy (commonly full-to-full), the security deposit amount, and whether your cover includes glass/tyres/undercarriage. If you are staying in or near the ZTL, confirm with your accommodation where you may legally drive and park, and consider choosing a smaller car for tighter roads and easier parking.
Catania–Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) Car Rental Area
Best overall choice for most Taormina trips: widest selection of suppliers and vehicle types, typically longer opening hours and stronger availability for automatics. Pros: competitive rates, easy onward drive via the A18 towards Taormina. Cons: busier desks in peak season, possible queues, and city driving around Catania can feel hectic; allow time for the rental process and vehicle check.
Taormina Centre / Corso Umberto Area (Limited Vehicle Access)
Convenient on paper, but practical limitations apply. Pros: walkable if you are already staying centrally and only need a car for a day or two. Cons: ZTL restrictions, narrow streets, and scarce parking can make collection/return stressful; confirm exact pick-up point access and where you can legally stop.
Taormina-Giardini Station / Giardini Naxos (Coastal Area)
Often easier than the historic centre, with better road access. Pros: closer to main roads, typically simpler for pick-up/return and parking; good base if you’re staying by the sea. Cons: may have fewer suppliers and shorter opening hours than the airport; you may need a taxi/bus to reach the desk depending on your accommodation.

Taormina's medieval centre is restricted by ZTL zones with hairpin bends and tiny alleyways. A compact car slips through Corso Umberto's pedestrian perimeter, parks in scarce bays and shrugs off tight Sicilian village lanes. Ideal for couples on a short break who want zero stress at the wheel.

Mount Etna's approach roads climb sharply with switchbacks above 1,800 metres and occasional gravel tracks to craters. An SUV with a higher ride height, grippy tyres and a stronger engine handles altitude changes confidently. British families will appreciate the boot space for hiking kit and winter snow gear.

Taormina Car Hire: Practical FAQs

Answers for UK drivers on ZTL fines, Mount Etna snow chains, parking and Sicilian motorway tolls

Can I use my UK photocard driving licence in Italy, or is an International Driving Permit compulsory?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is valid for tourist rentals in Italy without an IDP since Brexit. However, several major rental firms (notably Hertz, Avis and Sixt) will still refuse to hand over the keys at Catania Airport unless you produce a 1968-format IDP alongside it, which costs just £5.50 from the AA or RAC before you fly. The original paper counterpart is no longer required. Carry your passport and a credit card in the lead driver's name and you are ready to drive off the A18 motorway towards Taormina within 30 minutes of landing.
Will I be fined for driving into Taormina's historic centre?
Almost certainly, yes. The entire Corso Umberto pedestrian zone and most approach lanes are covered by ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) cameras that photograph number plates 24/7. Unauthorised entries trigger an €87–€105 fine, plus administrative fees, posted weeks later to the rental company. Only vehicles pre-registered by a hotel, residence or permit-holder may enter. Leave your car at Porta Catania, Lumbi or the cable-car car park on the outskirts, then walk the 10–15 minutes downhill. Saving yourself 20 minutes of driving is rarely worth a four-figure bill.
Where can I actually park in Taormina without getting clamped or fined?
Honest answer: nowhere is free, and most central bays are residents-only (yellow lines). Use the three official car parks: Porta Catania (€2.50/hour), Lumbi (€18/day, cheaper overnight) and the Funivia car park (€20/day) near the cable car to Mazzarò beach. Blue-stripe street bays cost €1–€1.50/hour via meter or the EasyPark app. In July and August arrive before 09:00 or after 19:00, as lots fill by 10:30 and traffic on the SP10 from Catania grinds to a standstill.
Can I drive up Mount Etna in winter, and are snow chains actually enforced?
Yes, but only with the right equipment. From 1 November to 15 April, Sicilian law requires snow chains, winter M+S tyres or a 4×4 on the SS120 and the SP92 to Rifugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana, with police spot-checks at Fornazzo. Chains cost €35–€50 a set, available from garages in Nicolosi; rental firms virtually never supply them. Above 2,000 m the road closes entirely when snow exceeds 30 cm, usually between December and early March. Check communetaormina.it and the official Parco dell'Etna site the morning of your trip.
I am 23 and want to hire a Fiat 500 at Catania Airport – how much extra will age cost me?
Plan on a young-driver surcharge of €18–€25 per day, capped at roughly €150–€200 per rental, added at the desk on top of the basic rate. Drivers under 21 are flatly refused by most international firms; Maggiore and Locauto occasionally start from 19 with a higher fee and a 1-year licence minimum. There is no upper-age cap at the major chains, but over-70s may face an extra insurance check and must present a recent medical letter in Italian or English. Book online in advance to lock in the best rate.
