Tokyo Car Rental Guide For Travellers From The United Kingdom
Renting a car in Tokyo can be excellent value if you are planning day trips or touring regions such as Hakone, Fuji Five Lakes, Nikko or the Izu Peninsula. Within central Tokyo, public transport is often faster and parking can be costly, so a car is usually most convenient when you will be leaving the city, travelling with luggage, or prioritising flexibility. UK travellers should note that Japan drives on the left, but you will typically need an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1949 Geneva Convention alongside your UK licence. Expect expressway tolls (often easiest with an ETC card), tight urban streets, and strict rules on drink-driving and parking.

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) – Car Rental Counters
Best for convenience and quick access to central Tokyo and Yokohama. Major brands operate airport counters with nearby vehicle pick-up. Pros: excellent availability, long opening hours, straightforward for late arrivals. Cons: higher day rates than some city branches, traffic can be heavy at peak times, and city driving/parking may feel intense on your first day.
Tokyo Station / Marunouchi Area
Pros: easy to reach by rail from anywhere in Tokyo; practical for collecting a car just before leaving the city via expressways. Cons: premium pricing is common; parking and one-way systems can be tricky; pick-up queues may be longer at busy times.
Shinjuku
Pros: convenient for westbound trips (e.g., Mount Fuji/Hakone); excellent public transport connections for collecting without dragging luggage across the city. Cons: very busy roads, limited kerb space, and paid parking can be expensive and restrictive.

Tokyo's narrow lanes and bustling streets demand a nimble vehicle. A small hatchback slots effortlessly into tight parking spaces common in residential neighbourhoods. Its fuel efficiency proves invaluable given Tokyo's higher fuel prices. The compact dimensions make navigating multi-level parking structures straightforward. Japanese drivers appreciate the visibility these vehicles offer in heavy traffic.

Japan's scenic routes around Mount Fuji and the Japanese Alps reward those with higher ground clearance. An SUV confidently handles rural roads that winter snowfall may affect. Passengers enjoy commanding views impossible from saloons. The robust build copes admirably with occasional rough surfaces on temple approaches. Why Choose Airport Pick-Up In Tokyo

Picking up at Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT) is convenient for immediate onward travel, larger vehicle availability, and longer operating hours. It can also reduce the hassle of carrying luggage on trains before collecting your car. Do budget for expressway tolls and consider delaying pick-up until you are ready to leave central Tokyo if your first days are city-based.

Tokyo Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers for British travellers on IDP rules, expressway tolls, parking and Japanese road habits

Do I need a Japanese translation of my UK driving licence, or does my IDP cover it?
Yes — and most British travellers get caught out here. Japan does NOT accept your UK photocard licence alone. You must carry BOTH a valid 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (IDP), issued by the AA or RAC before leaving the UK, AND an official Japanese translation of your licence. This translation is provided by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) at Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports for ¥3,000-¥4,000, or pre-arranged via the Japanese Embassy in London. Without it, rental desks will refuse to release the vehicle and traffic police can issue an on-the-spot fine of up to ¥50,000.
How much will Tokyo's expressways actually cost me, and is an ETC card worth it?
Tokyo's Shuto Expressway is eye-wateringly expensive. A cross-city run from Haneda to Shinjuku runs ¥2,000-¥3,000, and a full loop of the Central Loop (the Yamanote of motorways) is about ¥2,300. Hire an ETC card from your rental firm for ¥300-¥500 per day — it gives you a small discount and lets you sail through the toll gates. Without ETC you'll queue at cash booths and may need exact change. Honest advice: for sightseeing within the Yamanote line, the train is faster and cheaper; save the car for day trips to Hakone, Kamakura, Karuizawa or Mt Fuji.
I'm used to driving on the left in the UK — what Japanese road habits will catch me out?
Good news — Japan drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars, exactly as in the UK, so the basics feel familiar. Two real gotchas, though: you CANNOT turn right on red anywhere in Japan, even from a designated lane, and many residential streets in older wards (Asakusa, Yanaka, Setagaya) are barely three metres wide. A Yaris, Note or Sienta will fit; a Land Rover Discovery will not. Watch also for cyclists hugging the kerb on your nearside and pedestrians stepping out from tiny side alleys. Junctions are signed in Japanese only outside the tourist belt — download an offline nav app before you set off.
I'm 23 — can I hire a car, and what is the young driver surcharge in Japan?
Yes, but it bites hard. Toyota Rent a Car, Times, Nippon, Budget and Hertz all set the minimum age at 21, and drivers under 25 pay a 'young driver surcharge' of ¥1,100-¥2,200 per day. Premium classes (luxury saloons, large SUVs, some eight-seaters) require age 25+. Drivers over 65-70 may be charged a senior surcharge of around ¥550 per day at certain operators. Your UK licence must have been held for at least one year, sometimes two. Reserve well in advance during cherry-blossom and Golden Week (late April/early May) — Tokyo branches cap the number of young-driver rentals each day.
Where can I realistically park a hire car in central Tokyo, and how much will it cost?
Brutally. Central Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world to park a car: Ginza, Shinjuku and Shibuya run ¥400-¥800 per hour, and a 12-hour stay easily tops ¥5,000. Hotels charge ¥4,000-¥8,000 per night. Look for the red 'P' signs marking coin-operated multi-storey towers, but they fill by 10am. Illegal parking is ruthlessly enforced: fines start at ¥18,000, plus ¥30,000+ if your car is towed, and repeat offenders can be clamped. The honest answer is to leave the car at the hotel and use the Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway for sightseeing.
I'm driving to Mt Fuji or Hakone in February — do I need snow chains in Japan?
For central Tokyo itself, almost never — snow falls only a handful of days a year and gritters are rare, so the city simply grinds to a halt. However, if you are driving out to Nikko, Hakone, the Izu Peninsula, Karuizawa or Mt Fuji between January and February, winter tyres or snow chains are essential. Many mountain toll roads (Hakone Turnpike, Izu Skyline, sections of the Chuo Expressway) close entirely when heavy snow is forecast, and the Fuji Subaru Line is shut from early May. Hire chains from your rental firm for ¥800-¥1,500 per day and practise fitting them in the depot car park.
