Car Hire In Trabzon, Turkey: Competitive Prices With A Complete UK Traveller’s Guide

Pick up at Trabzon Airport or in the city and explore the Black Sea region on your schedule, with practical tips on insurance, deposits, fuel policies and avoiding hidden fees.

Updated Guide
Trabzon Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Trabzon is one of the easiest ways to explore the Black Sea coast at your own pace, especially if you plan day trips to Uzungöl, Sumela Monastery, coastal viewpoints and mountain roads where public transport can be infrequent. UK travellers should note that Turkish driving is on the right, speed limits and camera enforcement are common, and mountain routes can be steep with sudden weather changes. Booking ahead typically improves choice and price; always check what is included (mileage, tyres/glass cover, additional driver, young driver fees) and understand the fuel policy and deposit requirements before you arrive.

Trabzon Airport (TZX) – Arrivals Car Rental Area
The most convenient pickup for flights into Trabzon. Rental desks are typically located in or near the arrivals area, with vehicles collected from the airport car park. Pros: quickest start after landing, longer opening hours, wide vehicle choice, easy for late arrivals. Cons: can cost more than city locations, queues at peak times, stricter pre-authorisation deposits and documentation checks; confirm whether the car is on-airport or requires a short shuttle.
Trabzon City Centre (Meydān / Meydan Park Area)
Central pickup near the main square is ideal if you are staying in town first. Pros: often cheaper than airport, easier to inspect the vehicle in daylight if you collect later, good access to hotels and cafés while paperwork is processed. Cons: city traffic and tight parking, limited out-of-hours service, collecting with luggage can be less convenient than the airport.
Kaşüstü / Yomra (Coastal Corridor Hotels & Retail Area)
A practical option between the airport and central Trabzon, popular with travellers staying in resort-style accommodation. Pros: simpler road access, easier parking than the centre, sometimes strong local pricing. Cons: fewer walk-in options, may require a taxi from your hotel or limited public transport depending on location, reduced car class availability compared with the airport.

Highland routes from Trabzon to Sumela Monastery, Ayder Plateau and Uzungöl climb through steep, foggy passes that see frequent rain, mud and occasional snow. A compact SUV gives you the ground clearance and stable handling needed on tight hairpins and damp gravel. All-wheel drive keeps you confident when clouds roll in suddenly over the Pontic Alps. Strong heating and elevated visibility make these scenic drives far safer and more comfortable year-round.

The Black Sea coastal road between Trabzon and Rize sweeps past tea terraces, well-paved tarmac and seaside villages that get regular showers. A medium hatchback or saloon delivers a comfortable ride, decent boot space and reassuring wet grip without heavy fuel costs. It parks easily in town yet feels stable through long, curvy sections. Air conditioning and sound insulation make coastal day trips noticeably more pleasant for British visitors.

Trabzon's old town, bazaar lanes and seafront streets are narrow, busy and short on parking close to the main sights. A small city car slips through tight gaps, parks almost anywhere and keeps fuel costs down for short stays. It is ideal for quick visits to Hagia Sophia, Atatürk Pavilion and the harbour cafés. Light steering and a compact footprint make every errand around central Trabzon refreshingly stress-free.

Car Hire in Trabzon: UK Driver FAQ

Answers British travellers ask before driving out of Trabzon Airport — licences, HGS tolls, Sumela road conditions and winter rules.

My UK photocard licence — is that all I need, or do I really have to get an IDP first?
Legally, a UK photocard licence alone is enough to drive in Turkey for tourism. In practice, almost every rental desk at Trabzon Airport (TZX) will also ask for a 1968-style International Driving Permit; without it, agents routinely refuse to release the car. The IDP costs £5.50 from the Post Office and takes 15 minutes — sort it before you fly. Crucially, Turkey drives on the RIGHT, the opposite of the UK, so your first roundabouts and dual-carriageway merges will feel strange. After picking up the car, take a 30-minute loop on the coastal D010 to bed in — the locals are forgiving but heavy-handed with the horn.
Is the road up to Sumela Monastery safe in a normal saloon, or do I need a 4x4?
The 35 km sealed road from Maçka to Sumela Monastery is tarmac all the way and a regular hatchback handles it fine in dry weather — no 4x4 needed. The real risk is the Black Sea microclimate: thick fog and sudden downpours can drop visibility to under 20 metres, and rockfalls hit the cliff sections after heavy rain. From December to March, snow above 1,200 m usually closes the monastery approach. Check the park's official social media the night before, carry a paper map, and avoid the road in the hour after a storm.
How do Turkish motorway tolls work around Trabzon, and is the HGS tag worth the extra?
Turkey uses the HGS electronic tag, a sticker fixed to the windscreen that deducts from a prepaid balance as you pass gantries. Around Trabzon there is one toll plaza on the Black Sea Coastal Highway (D010) heading west, and another if you drive inland through the Bolu Mountains. The HGS tag from the rental company costs about 200–350 TRY plus whatever you top up, but skipping it is not an option — cash lanes are being phased out. Buy the tag at the desk; it saves a queue and a possible 500 TRY fine for non-payment.
I'm 23 — will rental firms in Trabzon actually hand me the keys, and what is the young-driver fee?
Most international firms (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) cut off at 21 with a minimum one-year licence, then add a young-driver surcharge of roughly £25–40 per day for under-25s in Trabzon. A few Turkish operators (Cizgi, Garenta, Avec) will rent from 21 with a smaller fee, around £10–15 per day. Drivers under 21 are refused outright. Book well ahead in July and August — the Turkish-diaspora school-holiday rush means Trabzon TZX often runs out of small cars by mid-morning. Bring two credit cards; many firms pre-authorise the deposit on a separate card.
Can I realistically drive to Ayder Plateau and Uzungöl in winter without snow chains?
Honestly, no. The Rize–Ayder road climbs to 1,350 m and routinely collects 30–50 cm of snow from late December to early March. Turkish police turn cars back at Çamlıhemşin if they have no chains or proper winter tyres, and the fine is 4,000 TRY. Snow chains rent for about 600 TRY in central Trabzon — buy them at a petrol station, not at the rental desk, and fit them in a flat car park; the camber on the mountain road is steep. If the chains feel too much, stick to the gritted coastal D010, which is open year-round.
