Compare great-value options from airport or downtown locations, and use straightforward advice on insurance, fuel rules and local driving to explore Tunis and beyond with confidence.

Updated Guide
Tunis Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Tunis can be a cost-effective way to explore beyond the capital—think coastal towns, ancient sites and countryside routes—on your own timetable. It is particularly handy if you plan day trips where public transport is limited or you are travelling as a couple or family with luggage. The main trade-offs are city traffic, tighter parking in central Tunis, and the need to understand insurance excess, fuel rules and possible add-ons at the counter. If you are mostly staying in central Tunis, taxis and ride-hailing may be simpler; but for multi-stop itineraries, a hire car often delivers better value and flexibility.

Tunis–Carthage International Airport (TUN) – Arrivals Car Hire Desks
Most major suppliers operate from the arrivals area. After landing, follow signs for 'Car Rental/Location de voitures', compare desk terms, then collect the vehicle from the designated airport parking area. Airport pickup suits late arrivals and early departures, with longer opening hours and quicker access to main routes out of Tunis.
Avenue Habib Bourguiba / City Centre Offices
Pros: convenient if you are staying centrally and want to start the hire after a day or two; potentially easier to compare nearby branches on foot. Cons: heavier traffic, limited kerbside parking, and slower pick-up during peak hours—plan extra time for paperwork and finding your way out of the centre.
Tunis Medina (Old Town) Edge Pickups
Pros: handy for travellers based near the Medina who want short onward trips; good access to ring roads once you are out of the narrow streets. Cons: the Medina itself has restricted access and tight lanes, so branches are usually on the perimeter; parking and loading luggage can be awkward.

Tunis Car Rental FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on licences, road rules, fuel, insurance and right-hand-drive driving in Tunisia

Can I drive in Tunisia with just my UK photocard licence?
Short answer: yes, but bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. Your UK photocard licence is valid in Tunisia for tourist stays up to three months, but virtually every rental desk — Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget and local firms such as Rent Car or Tunisian Rent — will ask to see a 1968-convention IDP before handing over the keys. Carry your passport, licence and IDP together. Minimum rental age is 21, and drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly TND 15–30 per day. There is no formal upper age cap, but over-70s are sometimes asked for a medical letter from their GP.
Will I struggle driving on the right-hand side?
Yes, a little. Tunisia drives on the right with left-hand-drive cars — the mirror image of the UK. Take extra care at roundabouts, which follow French rules: traffic already on the roundabout has priority, so give way as you enter. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras and mobile radar units are common on the A1 Tunis–Sousse motorway and around Tunis-Carthage airport; on-the-spot fines range from TND 100 to TND 500. The first 200 km out of the airport is the highest-risk window for UK drivers — ease into it.
What are the roads really like beyond Tunis?
Mixed, to be honest. The A1 motorway south to Sousse and Sfax, and the A3 towards Bizerte, are smooth, well-lit and free of tolls. Beyond them expect patched-up rural roads, wandering livestock and the occasional unmarked police checkpoint, where officers will simply ask for your licence, IDP and passport. South of Kairouan towards Tozeur and the Sahara, services thin out sharply: fill up whenever you see a station, carry drinking water, and download offline maps. Avoid driving after dark on secondary roads — street lighting is poor and pedestrians routinely walk on the carriageway. Daytime driving is the rule of thumb.
Is petrol easy to find, and do I return the car full?
Petrol (essence sans plomb 95) and diesel (gazole) are sold at stations run by Agil, Total and Shell in cities and along motorways. Fuel is subsidised, around TND 2.15 per litre for petrol — roughly £0.55. Stations close by 20:00 outside major towns, so refuel by early evening. Most rental contracts are full-to-full: return the car with the same fuel level or face a refuelling fee of TND 50 plus the missing-fuel cost, charged at a premium rate. There are practically no electric charging points, so do not book an EV. Diesel is the safer choice for longer Sahara trips.
What does the rental insurance actually cover?
Basic CDW (collision damage waiver) is included, but the excess is steep — typically TND 1,500 to TND 4,000, roughly £380 to £1,000. A single kerb scrape in the medina can wipe that out. Theft protection is usually a separate add-on. Either pay the desk's super-cover upgrade (around TND 20–40/day) or rely on a UK credit-card travel policy — but read the small print, as many cards exclude North Africa. Third-party liability is unlimited by Tunisian law. Always photograph the car on pickup, including the roof, wheels and any existing scratches, to dispute unfair damage claims at drop-off.
