UK Traveller Essentials
Vail/Eagle Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And How To Save
Hiring a car in the Vail/Eagle area is one of the easiest ways to reach ski resorts, trailheads and neighbouring towns on your own schedule. Public transport and resort shuttles can work for limited routes, but a rental car is often more convenient for families, luggage, late arrivals and exploring beyond Vail. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the main practical differences are driving on the right, potential winter road conditions, and understanding US-style insurance and taxes/fees. Prices and availability can change sharply in peak ski periods, so booking early and comparing fuel and insurance options usually delivers the best value.

Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) – On-Airport Car Rental Centre
The primary airport for Vail/Eagle. Most major brands operate on-site or via very short walks/shuttles, making it the quickest pick-up after landing. Advantages: maximum convenience for late flights, strong vehicle choice in season, easy returns before departure. Disadvantages: typically higher total cost due to airport concessions and taxes, and queues can build at peak arrival times.
Vail Village / Lionshead (Vail)
Closest ‘in-town’ option for resort-based stays. Advantages: can avoid airport surcharges, convenient if you only need a car for a few days mid-trip, easy access to the I-70 corridor. Disadvantages: limited fleet compared with the airport, shorter opening hours, parking in Vail can be costly and spaces may be restricted in high season.
Eagle Town (near I-70, Eagle County)
A practical alternative if you’re staying outside central Vail or want lower base rates. Advantages: often better value than resort areas, easier parking and pick-up logistics, good for longer rentals. Disadvantages: less convenient without a lift from your accommodation, and fewer upgrade choices during busy ski weeks.

Vail Pass climbs above 10,000 feet and sees heavy snow from November to April. An AWD SUV with winter or all-season tyres is strongly recommended, and Colorado law requires 4WD, AWD or chains on the I-70 mountain corridor. Higher ground clearance handles packed snow on resort access roads. Heated seats and mirrors are useful at sub-zero temperatures.

From June to September, Vail enjoys warm days, blue skies and very little rain, ideal for a convertible drive along the Million Dollar Highway, Trail Ridge Road or over Independence Pass. Dropping the roof makes the most of Colorado's big mountain views. Lightweight handling suits twisty alpine lanes and small village car parks.

Vail and Eagle County attract hikers, anglers, mountain bikers and campers who need real load space for kit. A pickup handles unpaved forest roads to trailheads, river put-ins and dispersed campsites with ease. Four-wheel drive gives confidence on gravel mountain tracks, and the open bed swallows skis, bikes and coolers in one go.

Pick Up At EGE For The Fastest Start To Your Trip

Collecting at Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is ideal after a flight, especially with ski bags or family luggage. You’ll usually find the widest selection of vehicles (including AWD/4x4 options in winter) and the simplest return process before departure. Expect airport-related fees and higher taxes, so compare total ‘pay today/pay at counter’ pricing rather than headline daily rates.

Vail & Eagle County Car-Hire FAQs

Honest answers for UK travellers on licences, winter driving, tolls, insurance and parking in the Colorado Rockies.

Can I drive in Colorado with my UK driving licence, or do I technically need an IDP?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is valid in Colorado for tourist stays of up to one year, and the state itself does not legally require an International Driving Permit. However, most major rental firms (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Sixt) will refuse to hand over a car at Eagle County Airport (EGE) without an IDP or a certified English translation. Get a 1968-convention IDP from the AA or RAC before you fly; it costs about £5.50 and lasts 12 months. Carry the IDP, your UK licence and your passport together.
Will I get stranded on Vail Pass in winter, and are snow chains compulsory?
Vail Pass climbs to 10,662 ft (3,250 m) on the I-70 corridor, and between November and April snow, black ice and chain-law closures are routine. Colorado does not legally require snow chains on passenger cars, but the State Patrol can impose temporary chain requirements and may close the pass entirely during blizzards. Rental cars are usually fitted with all-season tyres, not proper winter ones, so budget an extra US$15-25 per day for winter tyres in peak ski season, or carry your own chains and fitting gloves.
I'm 23 — will the rental company charge a hefty 'young driver' fee?
Yes, expect one. Virtually every firm at Eagle County Airport (EGE) sets the minimum rental age at 21, and drivers under 25 pay a 'young renter' surcharge of roughly US$20-30 per day on top of the base rate, usually capped at around US$300 per rental. If you're under 21 you will not be able to rent at all. Drivers aged 25+ pay nothing extra, and over-70s face no automatic surcharge, though some firms raise the insurance excess from age 70.
Mountain driving in the Rockies — any tips to avoid brake fade or animal strikes?
The I-70 descent into Vail is a sustained 7% grade over several miles, so brake fade is a real risk if you ride the pedal. Drop two or three gears (or use 'L' mode) for engine braking well before the descent begins. Elk, mule deer and even moose are common on Highway 6, US-24 and the Vail Pass frontage road, particularly at dawn and dusk — slow down and use full beams where legal. Vail sits at 8,150 ft (2,480 m), so drink water and skip alcohol on arrival day to avoid altitude sickness.
Is CDW enough insurance, or should I tick the full-coverage box?
On a beach holiday, CDW is usually fine. Around Vail, however, gravel-strewn winter roads, fallen branches and roof-rack damage at resort car parks are common, and CDW typically excludes tyres, windscreens, underbody and roof damage — exactly what mountain driving tends to break. Colorado's minimum third-party liability is only US$25,000, so add the 'supplemental liability' upgrade (about US$15 per day) for proper protection. Check your UK credit card first: many policies exclude SUVs, roof-top boxes and any driving on unpaved roads.
Are there toll roads around Vail, and how much is parking in the village?
Colorado has almost no tolls, and none on the I-70 corridor between Denver and Vail. The only route you're likely to hit is E-470 or the Express Lanes around Denver, payable online within seven days via ExpressToll — ignore the inflated paper bill posted later. In Vail village itself, expect to pay US$25-40 per day for covered parking in winter, and the structures fill by 09:00 in peak ski weeks. Use the free East Vail, Lionshead or Ford Park car parks and the free in-resort shuttle to dodge both the fee and the cramped ramps.
