Compare airport and downtown pickup options, understand insurance and fees, and choose the right car to explore Veracruz and the Gulf coast on your own timetable.

Updated Guide
Veracruz Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Veracruz is a convenient way to explore the Malecón and historic centre at your own pace, reach nearby beaches and coastal towns without relying on taxis, and make day trips more flexible. It can be particularly good value for couples or families compared with multiple rides. Expect right-hand traffic, busy city driving at peak times, and occasional speed bumps (topes). Most renters will need a passport, a valid UK driving licence, and a credit card in the main driver’s name; check the rental terms for any local insurance requirements and deposit amounts before you travel.

General Heriberto Jara International Airport (VER) – Arrivals Car Hire Area
Best for straightforward pickup after landing. Car hire desks are typically located in or near the arrivals area, with vehicles collected from signed airport parking zones or nearby lots. Advantages: longer opening hours, broader choice of vehicles, and easy one-way start for a road trip. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, queues can be longer at busy periods, and you may need to allow time for vehicle inspection and deposit processing.
Historic Centre (Centro) – Near Zócalo/Cathedral Area
Convenient if you are staying centrally and want to collect a car only for day trips. Pros: walkable pickup from many hotels, often easier to compare nearby branches, and you can avoid paying for airport access if you arrive by bus. Cons: heavier traffic, limited parking, and shorter opening hours than the airport in some cases.
Malecón & Port Area – Waterfront Hotels And Business District
A practical location for cruise/port-side stays and waterfront accommodation. Pros: close to major hotels and the seafront, good for short city breaks with planned outings. Cons: congestion around port activity, tighter streets, and parking can be more expensive during peak periods.

Veracruz Car Rental FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on licences, toll roads, young-driver fees, hurricane-season driving and insurance

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Veracruz with a UK licence?
Your valid UK photocard licence is accepted by every major rental firm at Veracruz Heriberto Jara International Airport, but Mexican traffic law technically requires a Spanish translation. An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by the AA (about £5.50) is therefore strongly recommended and frequently demanded at police checkpoints on the 150D toll road. Make sure you request the 1968 Vienna-convention version, as Mexico does not accept the older 1949 format. Without a valid IDP you risk an on-the-spot fine of around 1,500 MXN. Always carry the IDP, your home licence and your passport together, and remember the IDP expires after 12 months.
How do I pay tolls on the Veracruz–Mexico City motorway, and is a TAG worth it?
Mexico runs two parallel road networks: free 'libre' roads (slower, often rough) and toll 'cuota' roads (faster and well-maintained). The 150D cuota from Veracruz to Mexico City covers roughly 400 km in four to five hours and costs around 550–650 MXN per direction in cash. Most booths accept Mexican pesos only; a few larger ones take Visa or Mastercard. A TAG electronic tag is convenient for residents but cannot be opened by a tourist without a Mexican bank account, so carry plenty of small peso notes. Expect topes (speed bumps) on every village approach on libre roads.
Will I pay a young-driver surcharge if I'm 23, and roughly how much?
Yes. Almost every rental counter at Veracruz airport applies a 'young driver' fee for anyone aged 21–25, typically £12–£15 per day, often capped at £70–£90 per rental. Renters under 21 are usually refused outright, and the surcharge is quoted separately from the headline price on most UK comparison sites. Sixt and Europcar tend to be a few pounds cheaper per day than Hertz or Avis, but policies change. On your 26th birthday every surcharge disappears overnight, so it is worth timing longer rentals to cross the threshold if possible.
Is it safe to drive from Veracruz during hurricane season (June–November)?
Veracruz sits squarely in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and tropical storms between June and November can close coastal Highway 180 for 24–48 hours at a stretch. Sudden downpours cause flash flooding on low-lying sections near Papantla, San Rafael and Tlacotalpan, while unmarked 'vados' (fords) can sweep a car away in just 30 cm of moving water. Inland toll roads are less exposed but still see landslides in the Sierra Madre. Check CONAGUA and Protección Civil alerts each morning, keep the national emergency line 911 saved, and never drive within 12 hours of a named-storm landfall. Plan a buffer night before any flight connection and keep fuel above half a tank.
Is the basic rental insurance enough, or should I buy full cover?
Mexican law mandates third-party liability cover, included by default. Standard CDW/LDW, however, leaves an excess of USD 800–1,500 that you must pay for any damage, and most UK credit-card CDW policies exclude Mexico entirely, or cover only the rental contract and not uninsured extras such as tyres, glass, the roof or the undercarriage. Buy the 'zero excess' upgrade at the counter (about £15–20 per day) or pre-purchase a worldwide annual policy from a UK broker such as Insurance4CarHire. On collection and return, photograph every panel and check that the spare tyre, jack and warning triangle are actually present – rental firms in Mexico often omit them.
