Updated Traveller Essentials
Vilnius Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Vilnius is a convenient way to explore Lithuania beyond the Old Town—ideal for day trips to Trakai Castle, Aukštaitija National Park, or the Curonian Spit (longer drive). For UK travellers, the main benefits are competitive pricing, flexible schedules, and easy access to regional roads from both the airport and the city. Potential downsides include city-centre parking constraints, occasional peak-time traffic, and stricter deposit/credit card requirements than some UK renters expect. Most visitors collect at Vilnius Airport for speed after landing, while city pickup can suit those spending a day or two in central Vilnius before heading out.

Vilnius Airport (VNO) – Arrivals Terminal Car Hire Desks
Best for immediate pickup after landing. Follow signs for car rental in the arrivals area; most major brands have desks on-site and vehicles collected from nearby airport parking. Advantages: longest opening hours, widest vehicle choice (including automatics and larger cars), easy motorway access towards Vilnius and Kaunas. Disadvantages: airport surcharges can apply, queues at busy times, and pre-authorised deposits may be higher.
Vilnius Old Town / City Centre Pickup
Convenient if you arrive by coach/train or prefer to explore the Old Town first. Advantages: avoid airport queues and potentially skip airport fees; easy to collect close to hotels. Disadvantages: limited parking, one-way streets, and restricted access zones can make collection/return slower; weekend demand can reduce availability.
Vilnius Railway Station Area (Stotis District)
Practical for travellers arriving by train or intercity coach. Advantages: good public transport links and straightforward onward driving to the A3/A4 routes. Disadvantages: traffic can be busy at peak times, and vehicle choice may be narrower than the airport; allow extra time for return if you are catching a train.

A small car slips easily through Vilnius's narrow medieval lanes and squeezes into tight kerbside parking near Cathedral Square. Manual or auto both suit short hops between the Old Town, Užupis, and Gediminas Avenue. Fuel costs stay low when you are weaving in and out of the busy centre. A modest boot is fine for a weekend trip with hand luggage only.

Vilnius is the gateway to the Aukštaitija and Trakai lake regions, where some rural roads are unpaved and can get muddy after rain. An SUV gives you the ground clearance and stability to handle gravel tracks around Kernavė, Molėtai, and the hill forts. Boot space easily swallows hiking kit, picnic supplies, and a folding canoe. Heated seats and a higher driving position are a blessing on long autumn or winter days.

Lithuanian winters drag on from November to March, with temperatures often below minus ten and frequent black ice on the A1 and A2 motorways out of Vilnius. A premium saloon or estate with winter tyres, heated front screen, and robust traction control keeps you relaxed on the long drive to Kaunas or Klaipėda. Refined insulation makes early-morning starts far more bearable. Boot space is generous for ski bags and bulky coats.

Fastest Start: Pick Up at Vilnius Airport

Ideal for UK arrivals who want to get on the road immediately. Airport counters usually offer the broadest fleet, longer opening hours, and simple navigation to major routes. Expect the best choice for automatics, family cars, and late arrivals, though airport fees and peak-time queues can be a trade-off.

Hiring a Car in Vilnius: Your Essential FAQ

Practical advice on licences, winter roads, tolls, fuel and parking for driving in Lithuania's capital

Can I drive in Lithuania with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your valid UK photocard licence is accepted on its own for short stays, so most British travellers do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP). You must, however, carry the licence together with a photo ID. Minimum rental age is usually 21, with drivers under 25 paying a young-driver surcharge of roughly €8-€12 per day, and you need at least one year of driving experience.
What are the speed limits and how do speed cameras work around Vilnius?
Standard limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on dual carriageways and 130 km/h on motorways. Vilnius uses fixed roadside Gatso-style cameras and section-control cameras on main arteries such as the A1 and A2. Fines for speeding range from €30 to over €400, so stick to the limits, especially in school zones where 40 km/h applies at certain times.
Are there any tolls when driving out of Vilnius, and do I need a vignette?
City roads and most regional routes in Lithuania are free, but you must buy an e-vignette before using the A1, A2, A3 or A14 motorways. A 7-day car vignette costs about €11.50 and a 30-day one around €21, purchasable online at lakd.lt, at border petrol stations or via the route.lt app. Failing to display a valid vignette triggers a €120-€300 fine.
Is winter driving from Vilnius airport between November and March actually risky?
Yes, Vilnius sees temperatures drop to -15°C and frequent black ice from November to March. Studded winter tyres (marked M+S with a mountain/snowflake symbol) are compulsory from 10 November to 1 April; most rental companies include them in the winter rate. Carry a scraper, keep the fuel tank above half full, and avoid rural roads at night where snowdrifts are common.
Where can I park cheaply in Vilnius Old Town without getting clamped or fined?
Use the yellow-zone paid bays (€1.20 per hour Mon-Sat 08:00-20:00) or blue residential zones with a RimiPark or UniPark app ticket. Parking is free on Sundays and after 20:00. Avoid leaving any valuables visible, as break-ins in Gediminas Avenue and the old town are common. Never park on pavements or in dedicated taxi/bus lanes, as Vilnius towing fees reach €80-€120 plus daily storage.
