Car Hire In Vlora, Albania: Competitive Prices And A Practical UK Traveller Guide

Pick up the right car at the best value and explore the Albanian Riviera on your own schedule, with clear advice on locations, insurance, fees and fuel policies.

UK-Friendly Tips
Vlora Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Vlora makes it far easier to reach quieter beaches and viewpoints along the Albanian Riviera, as well as day trips towards Llogara Pass and the coastal villages. For visitors from the United Kingdom, it’s worth planning around local driving habits, variable road surfaces outside main routes, and rental conditions such as deposits, excess (deductible), and fuel policy. If you’re flying into Albania, most travellers collect a car at Tirana International Airport and drive to Vlora; if you’re arriving by ferry into southern ports, picking up in town can be more convenient and cost-effective for shorter rentals.
Lets Drive
Tirana International Airport (TIA) – Main Gateway For Vlora
Most flights from the UK arrive via Tirana. From TIA, the drive to Vlora typically takes around 2–3 hours depending on traffic and season. Car hire desks are usually located in or near the terminal, with pick-up in the adjacent car parks. Pros: widest choice of cars (including automatics), longer hours, easy one-way planning. Cons: can be busier in summer, queues at peak arrival times, and higher daily rates than smaller city branches.
Vlora City Centre (Boulevard/Seafront Area)
Convenient for hotels and apartments along the main boulevard and seafront. Pros: easy walk-up access, good if you only want a car for day trips, and often simpler returns if you’re staying centrally. Cons: limited fleet (automatics can sell out), stricter office hours, and parking/traffic can be challenging in peak season.
Vlora Port Area (Ferry And Coach Connections)
Practical if you arrive by sea or intercity coach and want to drive straight out of town. Pros: handy for travellers linking onwards to the Riviera, and quicker exit routes than the busiest central streets. Cons: fewer suppliers, availability varies by day, and you may need to arrange pick-up in advance outside standard hours.

Vlora's old-town lanes and seafront promenade are tight and busy in July and August, so a small hatchback slips into narrow bayside spots without fuss. It sips fuel on the long coastal stretch south to Himara and Dhërmi, keeping running costs sensible for British travellers on a budget. Light steering and modest dimensions also make it ideal for first-time visitors unfamiliar with local driving habits.

The Llogara Pass climbs sharply from the coast with dozens of hairpin bends, exposed edges and occasional fallen rocks in winter. A compact SUV sits higher, handles the gradients comfortably and carries four adults plus luggage for a Riviera loop. British drivers used to motorway cruising appreciate the extra stability on steep descents and the added grip on wet tarmac in autumn and spring.

Travelling with extended family or a group of friends to Saranda, Butrint or the Karaburun Peninsula is far easier in a people-carrier with seven seats and space for coolers, beach gear and cases. Air-conditioning is genuinely welcome when summer temperatures climb past 35°C along the coast. A taller van also gives a more relaxed view of the dramatic Riviera scenery, which British holidaymakers tend to prefer on longer multi-stop itineraries.

Vlora Car Hire: UK Driver FAQs

Practical answers on licences, mountain roads, insurance and fuel for hiring a car in Vlora, Albania

Does my UK photocard driving licence work in Albania, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You need both. Since Brexit, UK licences are no longer automatically recognised, and every major rental desk in Vlora will ask to see a 1968 IDP alongside your photocard. It costs just £5.50 from the AA or RAC, is issued over the counter in around five minutes, and is valid for one year. Turn up without one and you'll be refused the keys.
I'm used to driving on the left — how quickly will I adapt to Albanian roads, and is the Llogara Pass really that dangerous?
Albania drives on the right, so expect the first day to feel odd, especially at roundabouts and overtaking. The Llogara Pass (1,027 m) on the coast road south to Himarë has 24 tight hairpins but is fully tarmacked and perfectly manageable in a normal hire car. Avoid it after dark, in heavy rain, or between November and March when ice and falling rock become real hazards. Use low gears on the descent.
Are there motorway tolls around Vlora, and do I need to buy a vignette or e-tag?
No. Albania has no motorway toll system, so the A2 coastal motorway, the Vlora bypass and the road to Tirana are entirely free. There is no vignette, e-tag or barrier to worry about. The only charge you might meet is a small €2.50–€5 Komani Lake ferry fee, which is a long day trip north and not relevant to a Riviera drive.
What insurance is actually worth paying for at the Vlora rental desk?
Third-party liability is mandatory and usually included. Theft and Collision Damage Waiver typically come with a €600–€1,500 excess, and most UK credit card policies exclude Albania from their European cover, so that 'free' protection often does not apply. Pay the extra £8–12 per day for a zero-excess upgrade — pothole and stone-chip damage on coastal roads is genuinely common, and you'll sleep easier on the mountain passes.
How much is fuel in Vlora, and will I find petrol stations along the Riviera?
Petrol runs at roughly €1.55–€1.70 per litre (April 2026), about 20% dearer than in the UK, and diesel is slightly cheaper. Stations are plentiful along the Vlora–Tirana corridor, but they thin out sharply once you head south towards Himarë and Sarandë. Always fill up in Vlora before any coastal trip. Most pumps accept cards, though keeping a few thousand lek in cash is wise for rural stations that occasionally lose signal.
