Yerevan Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Know
Hiring a car in Yerevan can be a cost-effective way to explore Armenia beyond the city—especially if you plan day trips to Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan, or Dilijan. Expect the easiest experience if you book in advance, choose a clear fuel policy (preferably full-to-full), and confirm what insurance is included. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember you will be driving on the right in Armenia, and it is wise to allow time to adjust to local traffic flow, lane discipline, and parking norms. In winter, consider winter tyres and check road conditions for mountain routes. Below are the most popular pick-up areas, with straightforward pros and cons.

Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) – Arrivals Car Rental Desks
Best for landing and leaving the city immediately. Counters are typically in or near the arrivals area, with vehicles collected from designated airport parking. Advantages: widest opening hours, convenient after late flights, simpler for luggage, and easier to start a road trip. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, queues can form at peak arrival times, and prices can be higher than city pick-up—compare inclusions carefully (insurance excess, deposit, and fuel policy).
Kentron (City Centre) – Republic Square & Central Streets
Good if you are staying centrally and only need a car for specific days. Advantages: often competitive rates, convenient walk-up access from central hotels, and easier to inspect the car in daylight. Disadvantages: limited parking around pick-up points, heavier traffic at rush hour, and shorter opening hours than the airport—confirm after-hours return options if you have an early flight.
Northern Avenue / Opera Area – Central Hotel Zone
Popular for visitors based near major attractions and restaurants. Advantages: easy access from many hotels, practical if you want to avoid driving straight from the airport, and good for shorter rentals. Disadvantages: busy pedestrian/traffic mix nearby, kerbside loading restrictions can complicate handover, and you may need to walk a short distance to the vehicle parking area.

Yerevan's central streets tighten around Republic Square and the Cascade district, where parking can be tricky. A small car slips into bays near Vernissage and Garni's modest car park with ease. Low fuel use keeps day trips to Geghard affordable. Air-con copes well with dry summer heat. Both manual and auto suit relaxed city driving.

Southern Armenia's switchbacks to Tatev, the climbs to Lake Sevan, and the hairpins near Dilijan demand a high-riding SUV with confident ground clearance. You can tackle unpaved stretches and potholed village roads without scraping. Boot space swallows hiking gear and market finds. AWD reassures on loose gravel and rain-slicked mountain passes.

Family loops from Yerevan to Khor Virap, Noravank and back are far more comfortable with room to stretch. Seven seats mean grandparents, kids and luggage travel together. Generous boot takes week-long suitcases and regional wine cases. High seating helps on busy intercity roads. Auto transmission eases stop-start traffic around town.

Yerevan Car Hire & Driving FAQs

Practical UK-specific advice on licences, mountain roads, fuel, parking and police checks in Armenia's capital

Will my UK photocard licence work in Yerevan, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is recognised in Armenia, but you must also carry a 1968-convention International Driving Permit, available from the AA or RAC for £5.50. Police checkpoints are routine on rural roads, particularly the M1 to Gyumri and the southern highway to Tatev, and officers will ask for both documents together. Without an IDP, rental desks will refuse the car and any accident claim is likely to be voided. Keep colour photocopies of both as a backup, and note that the paper counterpart is no longer issued in the UK, so the IDP is effectively mandatory.
Will I get stranded in winter, and are snow chains compulsory?
Winter in Yerevan itself is manageable, but the mountain roads to Tatev, Dilijan, Jermuk and Lake Sevan become genuinely hazardous from late November to early April, with ice, black ice and sudden fog even when the capital is sunny. Snow chains are not legally compulsory, yet reputable rental firms (Hertz, Sixt and most local agencies) fit winter tyres as standard between November and March and rent chains for AMD 1,500–2,500 per day. Avoid driving after 17:00, carry warm clothes, water and a charged phone, and check road conditions on the HayPetak app before setting out.
Can I hire a car at 21, and what is the young-driver surcharge?
The minimum hire age is 21 at most firms, though Enterprise, Sixt and a few local agencies will rent to 19- and 20-year-olds into smaller categories. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly USD 8–12 (AMD 3,000–4,600) per day, usually capped at seven days. Drivers over 70 may face an additional insurance loading of about 10 per cent, and those over 75 should carry a recent medical certificate. The age cap itself is typically 75, so check before booking if a senior member of the party intends to drive.
Which petrol grade should I use, and are LPG stations easy to find?
Use 95-octane petrol for nearly all hire cars; 92 is widely sold but can cause knocking on turbocharged engines. Diesel is available at larger stations but is patchy outside Yerevan. LPG autogas is extremely common and cheap at around AMD 280 a litre versus AMD 480 for 95-octane, but hire vehicles rarely run on it. Stations in central Yerevan and on the M1, M2 and M3 accept Visa and Mastercard, though rural pumps are often cash-only. Fill up before leaving the capital for Tatev or Meghri, where diesel pumps can be 50 km apart.
Are there many speed cameras and police stops in Armenia?
Yes. Yerevan has fixed Gatso-style cameras on Mashtots Avenue, Komitas Street, Tigran Mets Avenue and the Hrazdan bridge, with fines deducted automatically from the rental company's local bank account and then charged to your card (around AMD 9,000, or about GBP 18, for 20 km/h over). Mobile patrols are common on the M1 to Gyumri and M2 to Lake Sevan, and weekend breath tests are frequent. Speed limits are 60 km/h in the city, 90 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Keep passport, IDP, licence and the rental contract within easy reach at all times.
How does paid parking work in central Yerevan?
Paid parking in central Yerevan (Republic Square, Northern Avenue, the Opera district and most of Kentron) costs AMD 100–200 per hour in blue-lined bays, payable via the city's SMS parking system, a mobile app, or coin-fed meters. Free parking is hard to find; yellow lines mean no stopping, and yellow zig-zags are tow-away zones with a release fee of about AMD 10,000. Hotel and Zvartnots Airport parking is free, but use a guarded lot overnight; street theft, while uncommon, does occasionally target hire cars with foreign plates.
