Zacatecas Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Zacatecas is a convenient way to explore viewpoints, colonial towns and countryside sights on your own schedule, particularly if you plan day trips outside the city where public transport can be limited. For UK travellers, the main things to plan for are insurance structure (local liability is essential), a credit-card deposit in the main driver’s name, and realistic driving times on mountain roads. In the historic centre, streets can be narrow and parking is limited, so consider collecting your vehicle after you have checked in, or choose a hotel with parking. Always review the fuel policy, mileage limits, and any restrictions for travel between states before you collect the keys.

General Leobardo C. Ruiz International Airport (ZCL) – Arrivals Area Car Hire
Best for quick access to a vehicle straight after landing, with convenient collection and return for flights. Pros: simple logistics, good choice of vehicles, easier start for road trips. Cons: can include airport surcharges, queues at peak arrival times, and you will need to drive into the city soon after collection.
Historic Centre (Centro Histórico) – Hotel And Office Collection
Handy if you are staying centrally and want to sightsee before driving. Pros: collect after settling in, potentially lower costs than airport, walkable access from many hotels. Cons: limited parking, one-way/narrow streets, and collection desks may have shorter opening hours.
Zacatecas Bus Station Area (Central de Autobuses) – City Access Point
A practical option if you arrive by coach or prefer a less congested pickup spot than the old town. Pros: easier road access, useful for onward travel, often simpler parking. Cons: fewer rental counters than the airport, area may be less convenient from central hotels without a taxi.

Zacatecas old town is wrapped in narrow cobbled streets and one way lanes that punish anything bulky. A small hatchback slips through the central tunnels, fits into the scarce signed parking bays and keeps fuel costs down for short hops between the cathedral and the cable car. British travellers used to city parking will appreciate the light steering and modest footprint. Air conditioning is a welcome relief from the high altitude sun.

Outings to La Quemada, Jerez or the Sierra Fría reward a higher riding position and the extra clearance a compact SUV offers. Steep descents, occasional gravel patches and sharp seasonal temperature swings suit a sturdier chassis with stronger air conditioning. British visitors driving out of the city in summer will value the boot space for cool weather layers and picnic supplies.

Multi generational UK holidays moving between museums, vineyards and silver mine viewpoints benefit from a people carrier’s generous seating and luggage room. A van handles long transfers from Zacatecas Airport calmly, with room for pushchairs, cool boxes and shopping from local markets. Automatic transmission is widely available and takes the strain out of unfamiliar junctions in the historic core.

Zacatecas Car Hire & Driving FAQs

Everything UK road-trippers need to know before hiring and driving a car in colonial Zacatecas

Can I drive in Zacatecas with my UK licence alone, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard driving licence is technically valid in Mexico for tourists, but every major rental desk at Zacatecas International Airport (ZCL) will refuse the keys without a 1949-style International Driving Permit alongside it. Buy the £5.50 paper booklet from the AA or RAC before you fly — it is not sold in Mexico. Minimum rental age is 21, with a young-driver surcharge of MX$250-400 per day for under-25s. Always carry your passport: federal police checkpoints on the Cuota 45 motorway from the airport are routine.
How demanding is the drive from Zacatecas Airport to the city, and what catches first-timers out?
It is only 22 km, but the Cuota 45D drops roughly 600 m through the Cerro de la Virgen with sweeping bends, blind crests and hard-braking lorries. Take the toll motorway (around MX$45) — the free Libre road is tighter, slower and used by hauliers after dark. At 2,440 m altitude, engines feel sluggish and turbo lag is exaggerated. The biggest trap is topes — concrete speed bumps, often unmarked, sometimes 30 cm tall — which shred tyres and buckle alloys. Brake gently on the descent to avoid cooking the discs.
Which fuel should I ask for, and how do I pay motorway tolls?
Most rental cars in Mexico run on Magna unleaded (87 octane, green M pump) or Premium (91+, red P pump); diesel models are rare. Pemex stations on the outskirts are cheapest and usually have a forecourt attendant who fuells for you — tip MX$10-20. Tolls on the Cuota network (for example towards Aguascalientes or Guadalajara) are paid in cash at staffed booths: there is no electronic tag and no card reader. Carry a stash of small MX$ notes, as queues build at bank holidays. A 300 km round trip to Jerez or Sombrerete typically runs MX$300-400 in tolls.
Is the zero-excess insurance at the counter worth the money, and what does the basic policy exclude?
Standard CDW in Mexico carries a deductible of US$800-1,500 and explicitly excludes tyres, windscreen, the roof and underbody damage — all of which you will meet on Zacatecas's cobbled streets and unforgiving topes. The full cover sold at the desk (MX$400-700 per day) is more complete, but read the small print: most policies still exclude damage from topes, potholes or kerbs, the single biggest cause of billshock here. Pay with a credit card so the firm can pre-authorise the deposit; debit cards are routinely turned away at Mexican rental counters.
Where can I safely park in the Centro Histórico, and how do I avoid being towed?
Street parking in the historic centre runs on parquímetros — pay-and-display machines costing MX$8-12 per hour, enforced Monday to Saturday 08:00-20:00. The easiest options are the underground car park beside the Cathedral or the lot next to the Teleférico, where overnight rates are MX$150-200. Never park on a yellow kerb, on a corner, against the flow, or in front of a shop's loading bay: the grúa operates aggressively and release fees start at MX$800 plus MX$200 per day storage. Watch the one-way system around Calle Tacuba — driving the wrong way into a pedestrianised street earns an on-the-spot fine.
