Pick up at Zagreb Airport or in the city centre, compare providers easily, and hit the road with clear advice on insurance, fuel rules, fees and local driving essentials.

For Travellers From The United Kingdom
Zagreb Car Hire Guide: Where To Collect And What To Expect
Hiring a car in Zagreb is a convenient way to combine the capital with day trips to Plitvice Lakes, Zagorje, Samobor, or the Istrian coast. Public transport works well in the centre, but a car adds flexibility for rural areas and multi-stop itineraries. UK travellers should note that Croatia drives on the right, most rentals are manual unless you book an automatic in advance, and parking and one-way systems can be the biggest stress in the inner city. For best value, compare total cost (including insurance excess, additional driver fees, young driver surcharges, and cross-border permissions) rather than headline daily rates.

Franjo Tuđman Airport Zagreb (ZAG) – Car Rental Area
Zagreb’s main airport is the most popular collection point. Most major rental desks operate in the arrivals area, with vehicles either in the adjacent car park or a signed short walk. Ideal for late arrivals and onward travel without entering central traffic first.
Zagreb Main Railway Station (Glavni kolodvor) Area
Pros: convenient if you arrive by train or are staying near Lower Town; easy onward routes to major boulevards. Cons: limited on-street parking, busy traffic at peak times, and collection/return can be slower due to central congestion.
City Centre – Lower Town (Donji Grad) Offices
Pros: practical for hotels/apartments in the centre and for short hires starting after a few days of sightseeing. Cons: tight streets, one-way systems, and higher likelihood of parking fees or needing a paid garage nearby.

Zagreb's medieval Upper Town is threaded with narrow, steep lanes, and parking in the centre is limited and pricey. A compact hatchback slips into tight spots, sips fuel, and makes light work of the city's café-lined boulevards. Perfect for two travellers keeping the budget in check.

Medvednica rises behind Zagreb, and winter often brings snow to its slopes, while Plitvice Lakes and the Julian Alps lie within a short drive. A mid-size SUV offers reassuring grip on slippery surfaces, roomy boots for hiking kit, and the clearance to tackle unmade mountain tracks with ease.

From Zagreb, the Adriatic coast and Istria are within three to four hours' drive, and a convertible makes the most of Croatia's famously scenic cliff-hugging routes. Drop the roof along the Makarska Riviera or through Istrian hilltop villages, and turn every journey into the destination itself.

Why Choose Zagreb Airport (ZAG) Pick-Up

Airport pick-up typically offers the widest vehicle choice, longer opening hours, and straightforward onward access to the A3/A1 routes for road trips. It can also reduce time spent navigating central one-way streets and paid parking zones—useful if you plan to leave Zagreb soon after landing.

Zagreb Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers on licences, tolls, parking and seasonal driving for UK visitors hiring a car in Croatia's capital.

Can I use my UK driving licence in Croatia, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You need both. Since Brexit, your UK photocard licence alone is no longer recognised — you must also carry a 1968-format International Driving Permit (IDP), issued by the AA or RAC for around £5.50. The paper permit is a legal requirement, not a recommendation, and must be obtained before leaving the UK as neither body issues them abroad. At a roadside check, presenting only the UK card can mean a fine of at least 260 HRK (~£30), refusal to release the hire car, and potentially voided insurance.
How do Croatian motorway tolls work, and is an ENC electronic tag actually worth it?
Croatia doesn't use vignettes — it runs a closed-toll system with staffed booths on most motorways. Expect roughly 0.40–0.50 HRK per km; the 410 km Zagreb–Split run is about 180 HRK one way, and Zagreb to Dubrovnik via the coast around 220 HRK. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most booths, but keep some kuna for older staffed lanes. A prepaid ENC tag from HAC gives a 10% discount and skips the queues, although the 60 HRK deposit is rarely worth it for a single trip.
Is winter driving around Zagreb dangerous, and will I need snow chains?
Snow is common from December to February, and the road up Medvednica mountain north of the city is genuinely hazardous without proper kit. By law, winter tyres (M+S marked) are mandatory on every vehicle from 15 November to 15 April — fines reach 700 HRK if caught without them. Snow chains must be carried in the boot when heading into hilly or coastal mountain areas, and at handover check they are actually present, as budget fleets often omit them.
How does paid parking work in central Zagreb, and what do the colour-coded zones mean?
The centre is split into zones — red (Zone 1) around Ban Jelačić Square, then yellow, green, and white further out. Red zone is roughly 12 HRK per hour, charged Monday to Saturday 07:00–21:00 (Sundays free); the white zone is free but rarely central. Pay at roadside machines using coins, or send an SMS with your plate number to the number printed on the sign. Wardens are very active and fines start at 100 HRK for even a few minutes' overstay.
I'm 23 — can I hire a car in Zagreb, and how much is the young-driver surcharge?
Major firms such as Sixt, Hertz and Avis accept drivers from 21 with at least one year of licence, but add a young-driver fee of around 10–15 EUR per day for anyone under 25. Some budget operators (Goldcar, Surprice) raise the minimum to 23 or 25 outright. The surcharge applies to every day of the rental, so a 7-day trip can add roughly 100 EUR. Always pre-book online, as walk-in airport rates can be 30% higher with the same surcharge on top.
I'm used to driving on the left in the UK — what should I watch out for on Croatian roads?
Croatia drives on the right, so the biggest risk is the first half-hour at roundabouts and motorway slip roads — British drivers regularly cut across lanes. Watch for head-on collisions on rural two-lane roads, where locals overtake aggressively on continuous white lines. Dipped headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day, even in midsummer, and the drink-drive limit is 0.05% — half the UK threshold. A single pint at lunch can put you over, and police checkpoints are common, so keep all documents in one place.
