UK Traveller Guide
Car Hire In Zanzibar: Locations, Navigation, Pros & Cons
Hiring a car in Zanzibar can be a cost-effective way to explore beaches, villages and spice farms at your own pace, especially if you plan to travel beyond Stone Town. Roads vary from paved main routes to rougher rural tracks, so choose a vehicle that matches your itinerary (a compact car for main roads; a higher-clearance vehicle for uneven surfaces). Expect manual gearboxes to be common, and check whether your rental includes a local driving permit arrangement, as requirements can differ by provider and trip type. For UK travellers, allow extra time to adjust to driving conditions, local road etiquette, and night-time visibility; daytime driving is generally easier.

Zanzibar International Airport (Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, ZNZ) – Arrivals Pick-up
Most convenient for immediate onward travel. Collect your car after landing and head straight to Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje or Jambiani without arranging separate transfers. Pick-up is usually by the terminal/arrivals area or a nearby meeting point; confirm the exact location, signage, and contact number in advance. Pros: widest choice on arrival days and simplest logistics with luggage. Cons: queues at peak times and stricter timing around flight delays—keep your booking details handy.
Stone Town (Central Zanzibar City) – Hotel/Office Collection
Ideal if you are spending a day or two in Stone Town first and do not need a car immediately. Pros: avoids airport rush, easier to inspect the vehicle in daylight, and you can often arrange hotel delivery/collection. Cons: narrow streets, limited parking, and heavier traffic in the historic centre—plan a clear pick-up point outside pedestrian areas.
Ng’ambo / Michenzani (Zanzibar City) – Practical Urban Pick-up
A more accessible area than the old town, with better road access for quick exits towards the coast. Pros: simpler navigation, more space to review documents and check the vehicle. Cons: fewer walkable tourist landmarks and you may still need a taxi from your accommodation depending on where you are staying.

Stone Town's labyrinth of narrow alleyways and congested lanes makes a compact car the most practical choice. Easy to park in tight spots near Forodhani Gardens and the old fort. Excellent fuel economy keeps costs down when pottering between coastal villages such as Nungwi and Kendwa. Air-conditioning is a welcome relief from the tropical heat and humidity, while the elevated driving position helps you spot darting boda-bodas and sudden pedestrians. Light steering is ideal for relaxed, stop-start sightseeing along the breezy east coast.

Zanzibar's reliably warm, dry weather and scenic coastal roads make a convertible a genuinely enjoyable option. Drop the roof along the palm-fringed routes between Paje and Jambiani for ocean breezes and stunning Indian Ocean views. Perfect for couples and honeymooners seeking a leisurely, photo-worthy drive along the east coast. Comfortable seating and modern sound systems suit unhurried journeys to beach bars and seafood shacks. Just remember to apply sunscreen and keep valuables tucked away when parking at popular beaches.

Beyond the main coastal highway, routes to lesser-visited spots such as Jozani Forest, the mangrove boardwalks, and southern villages can become rough, sandy, or potholed, especially after the long rains. A sturdy SUV with higher ground clearance handles these conditions confidently and protects against unexpected flooding. Generous luggage space easily swallows beach gear, snorkelling kit, and shopping from Stone Town's markets. Strong air-conditioning copes with the sweltering midday heat, making longer drives to Michamvi or the northern tip far more comfortable for families and small groups.

Land And Go: Zanzibar Airport Pick-up

Best for UK travellers arriving with luggage and heading straight to the coast. Airport pick-up typically offers the smoothest start, longer opening hours, and easier coordination for late arrivals. Confirm where the handover happens (terminal/meeting point), what documents are needed, and whether the price includes taxes, local permits, and a clear fuel policy.

Zanzibar Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers to common questions about driving and renting a car in Zanzibar

Can I drive in Zanzibar with a UK driving licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is accepted in Tanzania and Zanzibar for short stays, so an International Driving Permit is not strictly required. However, you must carry the printed counterpart paper licence too, as some rental desks and traffic police still ask for it. Most local rental firms also require you to be at least 23 years old, and drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge of roughly USD 5–10 per day.
Is it really safe to drive yourself in Zanzibar, given the road conditions?
Zanzibar drives on the left, the same as the UK, which removes one big adjustment. The main caveat is road quality: tarmac only really exists between Stone Town, Nungwi, the airport and a few key resorts; elsewhere you will meet potholes, sand, coral tracks and the occasional flooded ford, especially in the long rains (March–May and November). Stick to a 4x4 outside the main arteries, drive at 40–60 km/h, and avoid night driving after dark on any unlit road.
What does it actually cost to hire a car in Zanzibar, and what is included?
A small economy hatchback is around USD 30–45 per day, while a 4x4 suitable for beaches and stone-town lanes runs USD 60–110 per day. Basic insurance is usually included, but the excess can be USD 500–1,500 unless you buy the full collision damage waiver. Fuel is extra: petrol stations exist in Stone Town and on Zanzibar City, but away from them you rely on the rental company, so always collect the car with a full tank and return it full.
Do I need cash for fuel, tolls and parking, or will a UK bank card work?
There are essentially no motorway tolls on Zanzibar, so that is one less thing to worry about. Fuel stations accept cash in Tanzanian shillings or US dollars, and some accept Visa and Mastercard, but don't rely on the latter outside Stone Town. Parking in Stone Town and at major beaches is usually charged by a guarded attendant, so keep small TZS or USD notes to hand. A pre-authorisation of roughly USD 200–500 is also taken on your card at pick-up as a deposit.
What insurance should I take out, and is my UK credit card cover enough?
Treat your UK card's policy as a back-up, not the main cover: most UK cards only cover damage to the rental car, not the third-party liability, glass, tyres, sand-salt damage or theft, which are real risks on Zanzibar's rough tracks. Take the rental firm's full CDW, plus a separate third-party liability upgrade of at least USD 50,000, and consider the tyre-and-glass add-on. Without it, a single pothole-blown tyre or a scratched windscreen can cost USD 150–300 from your deposit.
Are there any driving rules or local habits in Zanzibar that catch UK drivers out?
Two issues come up most often. First, the speed limit is 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on open roads, and unmarked police checks are common, so keep your licence, passport and rental contract within reach. Second, dala-dalas (minibus taxis) and boda-bodas (motorbike taxis) pull over with little warning, and pedestrians walk on the carriageway after dark. Use horn flashes rather than overtaking, expect livestock and children near villages, and never drink and drive: the legal limit is 0.08% and roadside checkpoints are frequent at weekends.
