"Did you really book the car with only one dollar" my wife asked again when we planned our Oahu trip with the kids. I laughed and said that at the start I also did not fully believe it. In that moment I was a bit torn. I wanted to secure the car but I did not want to pay a big amount right away. We already paid for flights and hotel for the kids and the card bill looked high. If the car fee also came all at once it would look scary. I finally chose this plan and paid the 1 dollar. When I got the payment message I felt much more relaxed. The booking was safe and my mind was not so tight. Some days before our trip I checked my credit card and saw the rest of the money was already charged. The time was just one or two days before we went to Honolulu so I knew everything was paid and I did not need to worry at the counter. For me the whole thing was simple. What I really felt was that I did not need to take a big hit on my card in one day. As a parent the money pressure for the trip felt more spread out. On February 9th in the morning when we got ready to fly to Oahu I thought about the car booking again. I was not worrying like before about payment or wrong charge. When I went to the Avis counter with my booking number I cared more about the kids sleep and our luggage than the card. For someone like me who has to watch the kids and the budget at the same time this pay 1 dollar first and then auto charge plan made the booking part very smooth and it did not give me that sudden credit card pressure. For me that was already very good.
