  • Can I drive in Norway with my Belgian license?
  • What types of car insurance are mandatory?
  • What are typical car rental costs in Norway?
  • Can I rent a car for a one-way trip within Norway?
  • Are there significant differences in traffic regulations between Belgium and Norway?

This guide is thoughtfully compiled to address these concerns, ensuring Belgian travelers can confidently rent and drive cars during their visit. By the end, you'll find a quick-reference table summarizing all key aspects for hassle-free planning.

Can Belgian Citizens Drive in Norway with a Rental Car?

Yes, Belgian travelers can legally rent and drive a car in Norway with the correct documents. Age limits and young driver surcharges apply and must be met at pick-up.

  • Form of ID:

Foreign renters must present a valid physical passport.

  • Driving licence:

The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving licence with no major endorsements, held for at least 1 year. Accepted driving licence include:
    • EU/EEA Driving License (Belgian licences are valid across the EU/EEA, as well as in Switzerland and the United Kingdom).

  • Accepted cards:

Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required. Accepted credit cards include Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express and in some cases JCB. Some offers also accept Visa or MasterCard debit cards for deposit, but debit acceptance depends on the specific rental offer. Certain car groups may require two credit cards in the main driver’s name.

  • Age requirements:

Depending on the specific offer, the minimum age to rent ranges between 19 and 21 years. The maximum age is typically 80, and in some cases up to 99. For most offers, drivers aged 19–24 will be charged a young driver fee (for example about US$10–13 per day, sometimes capped at around 10 days for rentals up to 31 days). Young driver fees also usually apply to additional drivers. Some offers may apply an additional check or fee for senior drivers aged 75–80.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Belgium renting a car in Norway

How far in advance should I book a rental car in Norway?

It is highly recommended to book your rental car 3-6 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the summer high season (June to August). Early booking ensures better rates and guarantees availability of popular models, such as automatic or seven-seater cars.

Which platform should I use to book a rental car in Norway?

Use QEEQ, a car rental comparison platform. QEEQ allows you to compare prices from multiple suppliers, offers clear package options (often including extra insurance), transparent terms, and flexible free cancellation—ideal for travelers with changing plans.

What is the difference between high and low season for car rentals in Norway?

High season (June–August) means the highest prices and least vehicle availability, with crowded scenic routes and ferries. Shoulder seasons (May, September) offer moderate prices, good weather, and fewer tourists. Low season (October–April) has the lowest prices but challenging winter driving conditions and some closed mountain roads; winter tires are mandatory during this period.

Can I pick up a rental car in one Norwegian city and return it in another?

Yes, one-way rentals are widely available in Norway and are ideal for linear itineraries. However, expect a significant 'one-way fee' based on distance between locations. QEEQ will automatically calculate and display this fee during booking.

What is typically included in the basic rental cost?

The base rate usually covers vehicle rental, unlimited mileage, mandatory third-party liability insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), and Theft Protection (TP). Note that both CDW and TP have high excess/deductible amounts.

Which airport is best as a starting point for a Norwegian road trip?

It depends on your itinerary: Oslo Airport (OSL) for eastern/central Norway or nationwide tours; Bergen Airport (BGO) for fjord regions; Tromsø (TOS) or Narvik (EVE) for Arctic Circle, Lofoten Islands, and northern adventures.

Can I use my Belgian driver’s license to rent and drive in Norway?

Yes, as an EU member, a standard Belgian (B class) credit card-style license is fully valid in Norway; no translation or notarization is required.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if I have a Belgian license?

No. For holders of EU-standard driver’s licenses, an IDP is not required for renting or driving in Norway.

Are there age restrictions for renting a car in Norway?

Yes. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old and to have held a license for at least one year. Drivers under 25 may be subject to a ‘young driver surcharge,’ and some premium vehicles require a minimum age of 25 or more.

Do I have to use my own credit card for the security deposit?

Yes. The main driver must present a valid credit card in their own name when picking up the car. The rental company will block a security deposit on this card. Debit cards or cards in someone else’s name are not accepted.

How can I add an additional driver to my rental contract?

Request to add an additional driver at pickup. The extra driver must be present with their own valid license and ID. This service usually incurs a daily fee.

What makes up the total cost of renting a car in Norway?

Total cost = base rental fee + any surcharges (one-way, young driver) + extra equipment rental (GPS, child seats) + additional insurance + VAT (included in quotes) + later charges (tolls, admin fees, fines).

What do CDW and TP insurance cover?

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) limits your financial responsibility for vehicle damage to a fixed excess amount. TP (Theft Protection) limits your liability for theft to the excess. Both are included in standard packages but usually have high excess amounts.

What is the 'excess' or 'deductible' in Norwegian car rental insurance?

The excess (Norwegian: egenandel) is the maximum out-of-pocket amount you must pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Norway, this is typically very high, ranging from 10,000 to 25,000 NOK (about €950–€2350), depending on car and company.

How can I reduce or eliminate the high excess?

You can: 1) Buy the rental company’s Super Cover/Zero Excess at pickup (most expensive); 2) Select a 'full insurance' or 'zero excess' package via QEEQ (often better value); 3) Buy independent excess insurance from a third-party provider before travel.

Do I need to purchase Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)?

No. Both Belgian and Norwegian vehicles have mandatory third-party liability insurance that meets EU standards, so additional SLI is not generally necessary for Belgian tourists.

What hidden fees should I watch for in Norwegian car rentals?

Look for: toll administration fees, airport/location surcharges, out-of-hours service fees, and charges for late returns, cleaning, or additional equipment. Always read the rental terms carefully.

Should I choose a manual or automatic transmission?

Norwegian roads are often steep and winding. If you're not completely comfortable with manual transmissions on hills, it's strongly advised to book an automatic car—even at extra cost. Automatics are in short supply, so book early via QEEQ.

Do I need a 4WD for driving in the fjord regions?

In summer (May–September), if you only use paved main roads, a regular two-wheel-drive car is sufficient. 4WD is only necessary in winter or if you plan (and are allowed) to drive on remote mountain tracks.

What car size is suitable for two people with two large suitcases?

A compact estate (wagon) or compact SUV is ideal—these offer enough luggage space without being too bulky for Norway’s narrow roads. Small hatchbacks may be tight for luggage.

Is it better to pick up the car at the airport or city center?

Airport pickup is convenient (no transit needed), but may have extra fees. City pickups are sometimes cheaper and less stressful if you’re unfamiliar with local traffic, but require getting to the rental office and may have shorter opening hours.

What should I check when picking up the car?

Thoroughly inspect the car and record all existing damage with photos and videos (close-ups of scratches, dents, etc.), check the windscreen, tires, and interior. Ensure the damage report matches your findings and notify staff of any discrepancies.

What key questions should I ask the rental staff before leaving?

Confirm: fuel type and grade, fuel return policy (usually full-to-full), whether the car is fitted with AutoPASS (for tolls) and how tolls are billed, emergency contact numbers, and any restrictions on routes or ferry use.

Are headlights mandatory at all times in Norway?

Yes. Norwegian law requires dipped headlights to be on at all times, day and night, regardless of weather or daylight conditions.

What are the standard speed limits in Norway and are fines severe?

Standard limits: 30–50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 90–110 km/h on highways. Norway issues very high speeding fines—even small violations may cost hundreds of euros. Always obey posted limits.

What is Norway’s 'priority to the right' rule?

At intersections without traffic lights or explicit priority signs (yellow diamonds), you must yield to any vehicle coming from your right.

What is important to know about roundabouts in Norway?

Always yield to traffic already in the roundabout. You don’t need to signal when entering, but must signal right when exiting to inform others of your intention.

How do I handle narrow, winding fjord roads?

Drive slowly and stay calm. Use 'Møteplass' (passing places) to let oncoming cars pass. Downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic. Use low gear or engine braking on long descents to prevent brake overheating.

Should I be concerned about wildlife while driving in Norway?

Yes. Especially at dawn and dusk, watch for moose and deer, which can suddenly cross roads. In rural and fjord areas, sheep may be on roadways—slow down and wait for them to clear.

How does winter driving differ from summer in Norway?

Winter (November–April) requires mandatory winter tires, features icy roads (especially in shaded areas and bridges), closed mountain roads, and very short daylight hours. Only attempt winter driving if you have experience; always check road status on vegvesen.no.

How does the AutoPASS toll system work?

Norwegian tolls are fully automated via AutoPASS. Cars are fitted with a chip that is scanned at toll points; charges are logged automatically—no need to stop.

How are tolls handled for rental cars?

Rental cars almost always have AutoPASS chips. The rental company pays your tolls upfront, then bills your credit card (plus an admin fee) after your rental—sometimes weeks later.

Are ferries common in Norway and do I need to book in advance?

Yes, especially in the fjord regions, ferries are part of the road system. Short-distance ferries don’t require booking; just queue and board. For long sightseeing ferries (e.g., Geiranger), advance booking is recommended.

How do I pay for ferries?

Most ferries use AutoPASS Ferje: your car’s chip or license plate is scanned, the fee is billed to the rental company, and later to your card. Some small/private ferries may still allow card or cash payments on board.

Is parking easy in cities like Oslo or Bergen? How do I pay?

Parking is expensive and limited. Use public car parks (P-hus) or underground garages. Curbside parking has strict time limits. Pay via meters (accepting credit cards) or mobile apps like EasyPark. Read signs carefully; fines are steep.

What is a 'parking disc' and do I need one?

Some free parking areas require a parking disc (P-skive) to indicate your arrival time. Rental cars may not include one; buy at gas stations or bookstores if needed.

Is renting an electric vehicle (EV) a good idea in Norway?

Yes, Norway has extensive EV infrastructure. EVs benefit from reduced or free tolls and ferry fares, and offer a smooth driving experience. However, charging requires planning, and cold weather reduces range. The charging/payment process has a learning curve.

How good is the EV charging network, including in remote areas?

Excellent. Fast chargers are widely available on main roads, in towns, shopping centers, and even remote places like the Lofoten Islands.

How do I charge a rented EV?

Rental companies usually provide charging cards or key fobs. Tap these on the charger to start. Alternatively, use apps from major charging operators (e.g., Mer, Circle K, Fortum), register your own credit card, and activate charging via app.

How are EV charging costs billed?

If you use the rental company’s card, charges are billed to your credit card after your rental period. If you use your own app, payment is immediate from your card. Fast charging is usually billed per kWh or per minute.

Is range anxiety a problem with EVs in Norway?

Not for well-planned trips. However, real-world range is lower in cold or mountainous areas (20–40% reduction). Always plan to recharge when below 30% battery.

Any tips for planning an EV road trip?

Use an app like 'A Better Routeplanner' (ABRP), which calculates optimal routes and charging stops based on your EV model, weather, and topography.

What is the basic car return process?

Drive to the rental company’s designated return area, remove all personal items, and return the keys and paperwork to staff. If returning outside office hours, use the key drop box.

What are the fuel or battery requirements when returning a vehicle?

For fuel cars: almost always 'full-to-full'—refuel nearby and keep the receipt. For EVs: policies vary, but 80% battery is a common requirement. Confirm at pickup.

Should I inspect the car upon return?

Yes! Take photos and videos of the vehicle’s condition and the odometer/fuel level as evidence, especially if returning when no staff are present.

Why hasn't my deposit been refunded immediately after returning the car?

The deposit is a pre-authorization, not an actual charge. The rental company releases the hold after return, but your bank may take 7–14 business days to process the release.

Why do I see a new charge from the rental company weeks after my trip?

This is likely for tolls, ferry fares, or fines incurred during your rental, plus the company's admin fee. These are processed after your trip as billing data arrives.

What if I receive a traffic fine after returning to Belgium?

The fine goes to the rental company first, who provides your details to authorities and bills an admin fee to your card. The fine itself will be mailed to you by Norwegian authorities for payment.

How long until my security deposit is released?

It depends on your bank, but typically 7–14 business days after the rental company cancels the pre-authorization. The amount simply becomes available credit again.

What should I do if I disagree with a post-rental charge?

Contact the rental company by email, provide your contract number, and request a detailed bill and justification (e.g., toll breakdown, fine notice, damage report with photos). Keep all correspondence in case you need to dispute the charge with your credit card company.
