Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Israel renting a car in Greece

We’re planning a summer trip to Greece. How far in advance should we book a rental car?

Book as early as possible, especially for July and August, which are peak travel months for both Israelis and other tourists. Ideally, reserve your car at least 2-3 months in advance to ensure availability and better prices, particularly for automatic cars which are in limited supply during high season.

What’s the most reliable platform for booking a rental car in Greece?

I highly recommend booking through QEEQ, a global car rental comparison platform. QEEQ lets you compare prices from major brands like Hertz, Avis, Sixt, as well as reputable local companies, with clear terms and user reviews. You often find better deals than booking directly with the rental companies.

What type of car should I rent for Greek islands versus mainland areas?

On small islands like Santorini or Mykonos, opt for a compact car or even an ATV, as roads are narrow and parking is limited. For Crete or mainland road trips, a compact or midsize car offers more comfort and power. QEEQ allows you to filter car types based on your destination and group size.

Are manual or automatic cars more common in Greece? Which should I choose?

Manual transmission cars are the norm in Greece and are significantly cheaper. If you’re used to driving automatic cars in Israel, make sure to filter for 'automatic' when booking—these are limited and more expensive, especially in peak season. Always select this option early on QEEQ.

Will the rental company ask for my flight number? Why?

Yes, most airport rental bookings require a flight number. This helps the company track flight delays and hold your car if your flight is late. Failure to provide a correct flight number could risk your car being given to someone else if you’re delayed.

Can I trust very cheap local rental companies in Greece?

Greece has many family-run local rental agencies, which can offer great service and prices. However, vehicle quality and insurance terms may vary. Booking via QEEQ adds a layer of reliability, as they only partner with vetted companies and provide customer support in case of disputes.

We’re traveling with kids. How do I reserve child safety seats?

Book child seats as an 'extra' during your car booking process—don’t rely on getting them last-minute at the counter. Greek law requires appropriate child seats for certain ages and heights. QEEQ makes it easy to add the right type and quantity during booking, and costs are clearly listed.

What is a 'one-way rental' in Greece? Is it convenient?

A one-way rental means picking up a car in one location and returning it in another. This is convenient on the mainland (e.g., Athens to Thessaloniki), but usually incurs a significant 'one-way fee.' QEEQ shows all fees transparently when you input different pick-up and drop-off locations.

What’s the minimum age for renting a car in Greece? Are there extra charges for young or senior drivers?

The minimum age is usually 21, with at least 1 year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 almost always pay a daily 'young driver fee.' Some companies charge extra for drivers over 70 or 75. QEEQ displays these policies clearly in the 'Important Information' section before booking.

What important terms should I check when booking on QEEQ?

Always read the 'rental terms' or 'important information' before booking. Focus on: insurance coverage and excess, fuel policy (full-to-full recommended), mileage limits (usually unlimited), deposit amount, and regulations about cross-border or ferry use.

Is my Israeli driver’s license valid in Greece? Do I really need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Strongly recommended. While the newer Israeli license (plastic, B-class, with English) may be accepted in some EU countries, Greek rental agents and police often insist on an IDP as an official translation. Avoid the risk of being refused a car or fined by obtaining an IDP before your trip.

What documents do I need to present at pick-up?

You’ll need: 1) the main driver’s valid passport, 2) original Israeli driver’s license, 3) International Driving Permit (IDP), and 4) a credit card in the main driver’s name to pay the balance and secure the deposit.

Can I pay with my spouse’s credit card or a debit card?

No. The credit card must be in the main driver’s name and must be an embossed credit card—not a debit or prepaid card. This is standard industry practice for deposit guarantees. If you don’t have the correct card, the company may refuse to hand over the car and your deposit may be lost.

Is the car rental counter easy to find at Athens airport? Is the pick-up process complicated?

The rental area at Athens International Airport is well signposted—just follow 'Car Rentals' after arrivals. Show your QEEQ booking confirmation, passport, licenses, IDP, and credit card at the desk. Staff will guide you to the car park for vehicle collection.

How should I inspect the car at pick-up?

Before driving off, use your phone to record a video or take photos of every scratch, dent, bumper, wheel, roof, and glass. Ensure all existing damage is marked on the check-out form. Also check tire pressure, cleanliness, AC, and fuel level.

What if my booked car model is not available?

If the company can’t provide your reserved car group, they must upgrade you for free. If they try to downgrade you, you have the right to refuse and ask for an upgrade or a price reduction.

The counter staff are pushing expensive extra insurance. What should I do?

Stay calm and firm. If you already purchased QEEQ’s full coverage or your credit card provides insurance, politely decline the counter’s upsell by saying, 'Thank you, I am already fully covered.' Know what you’re covered for before you arrive.

If my flight is delayed, will my car reservation be cancelled?

If you provided your flight number, the rental company will track your arrival and usually hold the car for you. Without a flight number, being late (typically more than 1-2 hours) could result in your booking being cancelled as a 'no-show.'

Can I add an additional driver at pick-up? What does it cost?

Yes, but all drivers must be present at pick-up with their passports, licenses, and IDPs. There’s usually a daily fee for each additional driver, though some QEEQ deals include one free additional driver.

Will I have trouble communicating at local rental counters if I don’t speak Greek?

In tourist areas and airports, rental staff generally speak fluent English. Having your QEEQ booking and all documents ready will make the process smoother.

What are the basic driving rules in Greece? Is it different from Israel?

Greece, like Israel, drives on the right with left-hand steering. Basic rules are similar: vehicles in roundabouts generally have right of way, and you cannot turn right on red. Be especially cautious at roundabouts, as local habits can be inconsistent.

Are the roads on Greek islands really as tricky as people say?

Yes—especially in mountainous areas and on small islands. Roads are often narrow, winding, and lack guardrails. Drive slowly, preferably during daylight, and yield to oncoming traffic. Don’t blindly trust GPS, as some small roads may be in poor condition.

How difficult is parking in big Greek cities like Athens or Thessaloniki?

Very difficult—much like parking in Tel Aviv city center. Street parking is scarce and color-coded (blue for paid, white for free, yellow for special use). It’s safest to use a paid parking garage downtown.

Are there toll roads in Greece? How do I pay?

Yes, major highways such as the A1 (Athens-Thessaloniki) have tolls. You can pay at the booths with cash (euros) or credit cards. Always carry some change.

Which navigation apps work best in Greece? How’s the mobile signal?

Google Maps and Waze are both reliable, but in remote areas and mountains, signal can be weak. Download offline maps before your trip. Waze is especially good for speed camera and police alerts.

What’s the typical driving style of Greek locals?

Greek drivers can be assertive and sometimes impatient, enjoying overtaking and frequently honking (not always aggressively). As a visitor, stay calm, follow the rules, and let aggressive drivers pass.

Do I need to pump my own gas in Greece?

Most gas stations are full service—just tell the attendant what type and how much fuel you want, or say 'full tank.' You can pay by cash or card.

Is it safe to drive on rural Greek roads at night?

Be extra cautious. Many rural roads lack street lighting and may have animals like goats wandering onto them. If possible, arrive at your destination before dark. If you must drive at night, go slowly and use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic.

Are road signs in Greece in English?

On highways, major roads, and tourist areas, signs are bilingual (Greek and English). In remote villages, some signs may be only in Greek, so use GPS or offline maps as backup.

What is a ZTL zone, and how do I avoid entering one?

ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) is a restricted traffic zone, common in historic city centers. In Greece, some old towns restrict non-resident vehicles at certain times. Watch for red circle traffic signs and, if unsure, park outside and walk in.

What’s included in the rental price? What is CDW?

The base price usually includes the rental fee, third-party liability insurance (TPL), and collision damage waiver (CDW) plus theft protection (TP). Note that CDW and TP typically have high deductibles ('excess').

What is an 'excess'? How can I reduce it to zero?

The excess is the maximum amount you must pay for damages or theft, often €800-2000. To reduce it to zero, you need to buy the rental company’s expensive 'super cover' at the counter or purchase full coverage via QEEQ for a better price.

Is buying insurance from QEEQ better than from the rental counter?

Yes, QEEQ’s full coverage options are usually much cheaper than the counter’s insurance and often cover more, including wheels, glass, and underbody damage.

Does the rental company’s 'full insurance' cover everything?

No—there are usually exclusions, including tires, glass, undercarriage, roof, lost keys, misfuelling, and damage on unpaved roads. Always read the policy details.

What is the security deposit, and how much is it?

The deposit is an amount blocked on your credit card as a guarantee for damages or unpaid charges. It typically equals or exceeds your insurance excess, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand euros.

When will I get my deposit back?

The deposit is pre-authorized, not charged. After you return the car in good condition, the company releases the hold, but it can take 7-30 business days to show on your card, depending on your bank.

What are common 'hidden fees' in Greek car rentals?

Common extras include: airport surcharge, young/senior driver fees, additional driver, child seats, GPS, one-way fee, out-of-hours pick-up/drop-off, and costly insurance upgrades. QEEQ lists most fees transparently during booking.

What is the 'full-to-full' fuel policy, and is it best?

'Full-to-full' means you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full—this is the fairest policy. Avoid 'full-to-empty,' where you prepay a tank at a premium and are not refunded for unused fuel.

Is gasoline in Greece more expensive than in Israel?

Yes, fuel prices in Greece are generally higher than in Israel—among the higher prices in Europe. Factor this into your travel budget.

How can I save money on car rental in Greece?

Book early via QEEQ for the best rates, choose a manual economy car, opt for full-to-full fuel, avoid expensive counter insurance by using QEEQ’s add-on, and consider city-center pick-up instead of airports. Avoid one-way rentals if possible.

Can I take my rental car on a ferry to another island?

Most rental companies’ insurance does not cover the car on ferries unless you get written permission and buy extra ferry insurance. Always declare your ferry plans during booking or at pick-up—QEEQ will highlight this in the terms.

What’s the typical procedure for returning a rental car?

Drive to the designated return area, where staff will inspect the car for damage, mileage, and fuel. Allow at least 30 minutes for the process, and longer at busy airports.

If I get a traffic fine (e.g., for parking), what should I do?

Pay it promptly at a local post office or bank. If ignored, the rental company will pay it, charge your credit card, and add a hefty administration fee (often €50+).

What should I do if I have a road accident in Greece?

Stay calm. 1) Ensure safety and call 112 for emergencies. 2) Always call the police (100) for an official report—this is needed for insurance. 3) Notify your rental company via their 24/7 hotline. 4) Take photos of the scene, vehicles, and documents.

What if my rental car breaks down?

Call the roadside assistance number provided in your rental contract or on the key tag. Give your exact location (use Google Maps if needed) and describe the issue. They’ll send help or arrange repairs.

What emergency numbers should I know in Greece?

112 is the EU-wide emergency number (ambulance, police, fire), with multilingual support. 100 is for police, 166 is for ambulance.

What if I notice a scratch at return that I missed during pick-up?

This is why thorough check and photos at pick-up are essential. Without proof the damage was pre-existing, you may be liable. If you have zero-excess insurance or QEEQ’s full coverage, you may pay initially but can claim reimbursement later.

Can I return the car late?

Avoid it. Most companies allow a grace period of 30-59 minutes, but after that, they may charge you for an extra full day at the standard rate. If you know you’ll be late, call the rental company as early as possible.

Can I pick up a car on one island and return it on another?

Very rarely, and only at a very high cost due to inter-island transport fees. It’s usually cheaper and easier to rent and return on the same island, then rent a new car on the next island.

What’s the last thing I should do before leaving the car after return?

Double-check the interior! Make sure you haven’t left any belongings—especially valuables and travel documents—before walking away. Retrieving lost items becomes very difficult afterward.
