Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Morocco renting a car in Spain

Why is it recommended to use a platform like QEEQ.com to book a rental car in Spain?

QEEQ.com is a global car rental comparison and booking platform that is particularly friendly to international travelers. Its main advantages include: price comparison across major brands like Hertz, Avis, and Sixt; frequent all-inclusive insurance packages with transparent pricing; access to exclusive 'Full Protection' insurance (often cheaper than at the rental counter); and multilingual customer support, which helps reduce language barriers and resolve issues efficiently.

What is typically included in the rental price shown on QEEQ?

The price on QEEQ usually includes: the car rental fee, unlimited mileage (or a clearly stated limit), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP), and local taxes. Always check the 'What's Included' section on the booking page to understand the exact details.

What is 'Excess' (also called 'Franquicia') and why is it important?

'Excess' is the maximum amount you would have to pay if the rental car is damaged or stolen, even with insurance. For example, if the excess is €1,000, and repairs cost €2,500, you pay €1,000 and insurance covers the rest. If the damage costs less than the excess, you pay the full amount. Knowing your excess is crucial since it determines your potential financial risk.

Is the price I see on QEEQ the final price, or are there additional fees?

The price on QEEQ is for the booking, but some extra fees may apply at the rental counter, such as: additional driver fee, young driver surcharge (usually under 25), GPS or child seat rental, cross-border travel fee, and airport or after-hours pickup fee. These are listed in the rental terms and on the booking page, so read carefully.

Can I use a Moroccan credit card to book on QEEQ and pay the deposit in Spain?

Yes, you can use an internationally enabled Moroccan credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to book on QEEQ. However, at the rental counter in Spain, you must present a physical embossed credit card (with raised numbers and your name) in the main driver's name for the deposit. Debit cards or non-embossed cards are usually not accepted. Check with your Moroccan bank to ensure your card is enabled for international transactions and has sufficient credit (usually €800-2,000).

Can I cancel my QEEQ booking if my plans change?

In most cases, yes. QEEQ typically offers flexible cancellation policies; many bookings can be canceled for free up to 24 or 48 hours before pickup. The specific policy depends on the car rental company and package you choose, so check the terms carefully during booking.

Can I legally drive in Spain with a Moroccan driving license?

Yes, but with conditions. Thanks to a bilateral agreement, a valid Moroccan license allows you to drive as a tourist in Spain for up to 6 months. However, it is strongly recommended to also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) to avoid language or document issues.

What is an International Driving Permit (IDP) and where can I get one?

An IDP is an official multi-language translation of your national driving license. It is not a license itself and must be presented with your Moroccan license. You can apply for an IDP at Morocco’s National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) or authorized clubs like Touring Club du Maroc.

Which documents must I present at the rental counter in Spain?

You must provide originals of: 1) the main driver's valid passport, 2) the main driver's Moroccan driving license (held for at least one year), 3) International Driving Permit (strongly recommended), 4) an embossed credit card in the main driver’s name, and 5) the rental voucher (printed or digital). Missing any of these may result in being denied the car.

What are the age and driving experience requirements for renting a car in Spain?

Most companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Drivers aged 21–24 usually have to pay a 'young driver surcharge.' Some premium or luxury cars require drivers to be 25 or older. Most companies require at least one year of driving experience, though some require two.

If my friend also wants to drive, what do we need to do?

Your friend must be added as an 'additional driver' at pickup. They must be present and show their passport and valid driving license (and IDP if needed). There is usually a daily fee for additional drivers. Do not let anyone drive who is not registered, as insurance will be void in case of an accident.

If my Moroccan license is not in Latin script (for example, only in Arabic), do I need an IDP?

Yes, absolutely. If your license does not display primary information in Latin letters, an International Driving Permit is mandatory. The IDP provides a recognized translation for Spanish authorities and rental staff.

What does the 'Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)' included in the rental price mean?

CDW is not full insurance, but an agreement to limit your financial responsibility in case of damage to the car. You are liable only up to the excess amount. CDW usually excludes tires, windows, the roof, undercarriage, and keys.

What is 'Theft Protection (TP)'?

TP is similar to CDW but covers the car if it is stolen. Your liability is limited to the excess amount. Theft Protection does not cover loss of personal items inside the car.

What is 'Super Cover' (sometimes called Full Insurance or Zero Excess) offered at the rental counter, and should I buy it?

'Super Cover' is additional insurance to reduce your excess to zero, so you pay nothing in case of insured damage. It often covers parts excluded by CDW, like glass and tires. It is expensive (often €20–40 per day at the counter). Whether you buy it depends on your budget and risk tolerance.

What’s the difference between QEEQ’s 'Full Protection' and the rental company’s 'Super Cover'?

QEEQ’s 'Full Protection' is third-party insurance: if you have damage, you pay the excess to the rental company and later claim reimbursement from QEEQ. It is usually cheaper than buying 'Super Cover' at the counter, but you still need to leave a deposit. The rental company's 'Super Cover' reduces your deposit and excess to zero, but is more expensive.

What happens if I refuse to buy extra insurance at the rental counter?

You are not obligated to buy extra insurance. However, the rental company will freeze a large deposit on your credit card (usually equal to or greater than the excess, around €1,000–2,500), to cover potential damages.

What is Third Party Liability Insurance, and is it included in the price?

Third Party Liability (TPL or SLI) is mandatory in Spain and always included in legal rental prices. It covers injury or property damage to others in an accident, but does not cover your own car or injuries.

What is Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), and do I need it?

PAI covers personal injuries or death of the driver and passengers in an accident. It’s not usually included in basic rental prices. Check if your travel insurance already covers this to avoid paying twice.

Is my insurance still valid if I plan to drive into Portugal?

Standard insurance is only valid in Spain. If you plan to cross into Portugal or France, inform the rental company and purchase 'cross-border cover.' Otherwise, your insurance will be void outside Spain.

After arriving at the airport, how do I find my rental company’s counter?

Follow the 'Car Rental' or 'Alquiler de Coches' signs in the arrivals hall. All counters are usually located together. If your provider is off-airport, your booking confirmation will explain where to catch the shuttle bus.

What contract details should I check before signing at the counter?

Check: the final price matches your booking, any extra fees are explained, fuel policy (full-to-full or otherwise), the excess amount, mileage limits, and the car’s information (license plate and model).

What is a 'Full to Full' fuel policy?

It means you pick up the car with a full tank and must return it full. If you return it less than full, you’ll be charged for missing fuel at a premium rate plus a service fee. Always check the fuel gauge at pickup.

What should I check on the car before driving away?

Inspect the entire car—bodywork, bumpers, doors, mirrors—for scratches or dents. Check the windscreen and tires for damage. Record all issues with photos/videos (with visible date and time), and make sure they are noted on the check-out form.

What if I find unmarked damage on the car?

Go back to the counter or find a staff member and have them mark all damage on your check-out form, and sign it. Do not drive away until this is done, to avoid being charged for it at return.

What if I struggle with English or Spanish at the rental counter?

Use translation apps (like Google Translate) on your phone for real-time conversation. Have all your documents ready to show. Prepare key phrases in advance (e.g., 'No, thank you,' for extra insurance). If needed, call QEEQ’s customer support for help.

Will the rental staff show me how to use the car?

Usually, staff will only give you the keys. Take time to familiarize yourself with the car controls: seat adjustment, mirrors, lights, wipers, hazard lights, and the parking brake. For unfamiliar models, look for basic operation videos on YouTube.

Are Spain’s highways (autopistas/autovías) tolled, and how do I pay?

Spain has free highways ('Autovía,' marked with A, e.g., A-4) and tolled highways ('Autopista,' marked with AP, e.g., AP-7). Tolls ('Peaje') can be paid in cash, by credit card, or using electronic tags (Vía-T). Carry some euro coins for convenience.

What are the speed limits in Spain and how strict are speeding fines?

Speed limits: highways – 120 km/h, regular roads – 90 km/h, cities – 50 km/h (sometimes 30 km/h). Speed cameras are common, and fines start at €100. Strictly observe the posted limits.

How do roundabouts (traffic circles) work in Spain?

Always yield to vehicles already inside the roundabout. Once inside, you have priority. Use the outer lane and signal right when exiting. Do not cut across lanes to exit; this is dangerous and illegal.

What do the different colored parking lines mean in Spanish cities?

Blue lines (Zona Azul): paid, time-limited parking—pay at the meter and display the ticket. Green (Zona Verde): usually for residents, but non-residents can park for a higher fee and shorter time. White: free parking, hard to find. Yellow or 'Prohibido Estacionar': no parking—violators may be fined or towed.

What is a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) and can I drive into one?

ZBE (Zona de Bajas Emisiones) are areas in cities like Madrid or Barcelona restricted to vehicles with certain eco-labels. Most rental cars have the required sticker, but confirm with the rental company. Unauthorized entry can result in heavy fines.

What is the legal alcohol limit for drivers in Spain?

The limit is 0.5 grams per liter of blood (about one glass of beer or wine). For drivers with less than two years’ experience, it’s 0.3 grams. Penalties are severe. The safest practice is: don’t drink and drive.

What equipment must be in the car by law in Spain?

Rental cars must have: two warning triangles and a high-visibility vest. If you have to stop on the roadside, wear the vest before exiting. These items should be provided by the rental company.

Are gas stations in Spain self-service, and how do I ask to fill the tank?

Most highway gas stations have attendants. Tell them your fuel type (Gasóleo/Diesel or Gasolina 95) and say 'Lleno, por favor' ('Fill it up, please'). Some smaller stations are self-service; pay first at the machine, then pump your fuel.

Where do I return the car, and can I drop it off at a different location?

Return the car at the place and time agreed in your booking. QEEQ allows you to book one-way rentals (different pickup/drop-off), but you’ll pay a one-way fee. Follow 'Rental Car Return' or 'Devolución de Coches' signs at airports or city locations.

What should I do before returning the car?

1) Refuel near the drop-off location, keeping the last fuel receipt. 2) Tidy the car inside and out—excess dirt may incur a cleaning fee. 3) Remove all personal items—check glovebox, under seats, and the trunk.

What is the return inspection process like?

Park in the designated area and wait for staff to inspect the car for new damage, fuel level, and mileage. Accompany them during the check. If all is well, they will sign the return form—keep a copy for your records.

What if I return the car outside office hours and no staff is present?

Use the 'key box' system: park in the correct spot and drop the keys in the rental company’s box. Take date-stamped photos or videos of the car, fuel gauge, and mileage as proof of its condition at return.

When will my credit card deposit be refunded?

The deposit is not released instantly. The rental company checks for fines, unpaid tolls, or damages first. It’s usually refunded within 10–20 working days. If not received after a month, contact your bank, then the rental company or QEEQ support.

What should I do if the car breaks down (e.g., flat tire, won't start)?

1) Turn on hazard lights and pull over safely. 2) Put on the reflective vest before exiting. 3) Place warning triangles (50m behind the car; 100m on highways). 4) Call the roadside assistance number on your rental contract. Do not arrange your own repairs.

What should I do if I’m involved in a traffic accident?

1) Stay calm and ensure everyone’s safety; call 112 if there are injuries. 2) Park safely and wear the reflective vest. 3) For minor accidents, fill out the 'European Accident Report' (usually in the glovebox) and exchange info. 4) Notify the rental company immediately. 5) Take photos of the scene, damage, and other car’s plate. 6) Do not admit liability or settle privately.

What should I do if I receive a traffic fine (Multa)?

If stopped by police, pay as instructed. If the fine is from a camera, it will be sent to the rental company, which will charge an admin fee and forward your details to authorities. You will then receive the official fine, which you should pay online. Early payment typically offers a discount.

What if my rental car is towed?

This usually happens due to illegal parking. A notice will be left at the spot with the impound lot's address and contact. Bring your passport and rental contract to the lot, pay fines and fees to retrieve the car. It is expensive and time-consuming, so always park legally.

What if I lose the car keys or lock them inside?

Call the rental company's roadside assistance immediately. Most basic insurance does NOT cover lost or damaged keys; you will likely have to pay for key replacement, transport, and service fees. Always keep the keys safe.
