Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Sweden renting a car in Cyprus

Where is the best place to book my rental car for Cyprus?

Using a reputable comparison and booking platform is your best strategy. We recommend QEEQ, as it allows you to compare prices from various international and local suppliers in one place. It provides transparent information on what's included, fuel policies, and insurance options, helping you avoid surprises at the rental counter.

How can I ensure I'm getting the best deal on my rental?

Book early, be flexible with your dates if possible, and use a comparison site like QEEQ. Also, airport locations are convenient but can sometimes be more expensive than off-airport locations that are just a short shuttle ride away. QEEQ will clearly show you these different options.

What are some common 'hidden costs' I should look out for?

Be aware of potential extra charges such as: young/senior driver fees, one-way rental fees, airport surcharges, out-of-hours pickup/drop-off fees, additional driver fees, and costs for extras like child seats or GPS. A good booking platform like QEEQ will typically list these potential costs in the terms and conditions.

What is a 'fuel policy' and which one should I choose?

The best and most common policy is 'Full-to-Full.' You pick up the car with a full tank of fuel and are required to return it with a full tank. This is the fairest method. Avoid 'Full-to-Empty' policies, where you pay for a full tank upfront (often at an inflated price) and are not refunded for any unused fuel.

What is the security deposit and how much is it?

This is an amount blocked on your credit card to cover potential damages, fines, or fuel charges. It can range from €300 to over €1500, depending on the car category and the insurance you choose. The amount is 'held,' not charged, and is released after you return the car safely (which can take 5-15 business days).

Can I add an additional driver? What is the cost?

Yes, you can usually add one or more additional drivers. They must be present at pickup and show their driving licence and passport. There is almost always a daily fee for each additional driver, typically around €5-€10 per day.

What is typically included in the basic rental price shown on QEEQ?

The basic price usually includes the car rental for the specified period, mandatory third-party liability insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a high excess, theft protection (TP), and local taxes (VAT).

Should I buy the extra insurance offered on the booking website or at the counter?

This is a key decision. The basic CDW has a high excess (your liability, often €800-€2000). To reduce this to zero, you can buy Super CDW (SCDW) at the rental desk, which can be expensive. Alternatively, platforms like QEEQ offer their own comprehensive full insurance policies which are often much cheaper. This is a third-party policy, meaning if damage occurs, you pay the rental company's excess first and then claim it back from the policy provider (QEEQ's insurance partner).

What should I expect at the rental car desk at Larnaca (LCA) or Paphos (PFO) airport?

Have your documents ready (licence, passport, credit card, booking voucher). Be prepared for the agent to offer you an upgrade or their own expensive 'Super' insurance. If you have already purchased full coverage through QEEQ, you can politely decline their offer. Just be firm and say, 'No thank you, I am already fully covered.'

What is the single most important thing to do before driving away?

Inspect the car thoroughly. Walk around the car and check for any existing scratches, dents, or scuffs. Check the windscreen for chips, the wheels for curb damage, and the interior for stains or tears. Use your smartphone to take a detailed video and close-up photos of every single mark, no matter how small. This is your proof against being charged for pre-existing damage.

What if I find damage that isn't on the rental company's diagram?

Do not leave the parking bay. Go back to the agent immediately and insist that they add every single mark you found to the official rental agreement's damage report form. Make sure you both sign the updated form before you leave.

My rental is 'off-airport.' How does that work?

This means the rental office is not in the terminal. After you collect your luggage, you will need to call the rental company or follow the instructions on your voucher to find their shuttle bus. The shuttle will take you on a short (5-10 minute) ride to their office.

What happens during the car return process?

Drive to the designated car rental return area. An agent will inspect the car for new damage (comparing it to the initial report) and check that the fuel tank is full (if you had a Full-to-Full policy). It's a good idea to take another video of the car's condition upon return for your records.

What if I need to return the car when the office is closed (out of hours)?

Many companies offer a 'key box drop-off.' You park the car in the designated area, note the mileage and fuel level, and drop the keys in a secure box. Be aware that you remain responsible for the vehicle until it is officially inspected by staff the next business day.

I'm running late to return the car. Will I be charged?

Most companies have a short grace period (e.g., 29-59 minutes), but if you are later than that, you will almost certainly be charged for a full extra day at a high walk-in rate. If you know you will be late, call the rental company as soon as possible.

When will the security deposit be released from my credit card?

After a successful return with no issues, the rental company will instruct the bank to release the hold. This process can take anywhere from 5 to 15 business days, depending on the banks involved. It will not appear as a refund; the 'blocked' amount will simply vanish from your pending transactions.

I'm Swedish and used to driving on the right. What are the top tips for switching to the left in Cyprus?

1. Book an automatic car. 2. Mantra: 'Stay Left!' especially when turning or exiting roundabouts. 3. The driver should always be in the centre of the road. 4. At roundabouts, give way to traffic coming from your right. 5. Take the first 15 minutes in the car park to get used to the car's dimensions and controls before hitting the main road.

Roundabouts seem common in Cyprus. How do they work?

They are very common. You must give way to any vehicle approaching from your right. Traffic flows clockwise. Use your indicators: signal left when exiting at the first exit, no signal if going straight, and signal right if taking a later exit (switching to a left signal just as you pass the exit before yours).

What are the speed limits in Cyprus?

Speed limits are in kilometres per hour (km/h), just like in Sweden. Motorways: 100 km/h (minimum 65 km/h); Rural/Open Roads: 80 km/h; Built-up/Urban Areas: 50 km/h. Always watch for signs, as limits can change frequently.

Are the road signs easy to understand?

Yes, most road signs follow international EU standards and are in both Greek and English, so you will have no trouble understanding them. Place names on signs are also transliterated into the Latin alphabet.

How does parking work in towns like Paphos or Limassol?

Look for municipal car parks, which are plentiful and cheap. On-street parking is often managed by pay-and-display machines (buy a ticket and place it on your dashboard). A single yellow line means no parking at any time. A double yellow line means no parking or stopping. Illegally parked cars can be fined or even towed.

What are the road conditions like compared to Sweden?

The main motorways (e.g., connecting Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, and Nicosia) are in excellent condition, similar to Swedish motorways. Rural and mountain roads, especially in the Troodos region or Akamas Peninsula, can be very narrow, winding, and sometimes unpaved. Drive cautiously and be prepared for goats or sheep on the road!

What is the law on drinking and driving?

Cyprus has strict laws. The legal blood alcohol limit is lower than in some countries, at 0.22 mg/ml in breath (equivalent to 0.05% BAC). The best and only safe advice is to have a zero-tolerance policy: if you are driving, do not drink any alcohol.

Can I use my mobile phone while driving?

No. It is strictly illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is in a completely hands-free system. Fines are significant.

Are there many speed cameras?

Yes, the use of both fixed and mobile speed cameras is increasing across the island. They are common on motorways and main roads. The only way to avoid a fine is to stick to the speed limit.

What's the local driving etiquette?

Cypriot drivers can seem assertive. Use of the horn is more common than in Sweden, often as a short 'hello' or a warning on a blind corner. Flashing headlights can mean either 'I am letting you go' or 'get out of my way,' so judge the context carefully.

How do I refuel the car?

Petrol stations are easy to find. Most are now self-service and operate 24/7 with credit card payment at the pump. Some smaller, rural stations may still have an attendant who will fill the car for you. Unleaded petrol is '95' or '98,' and diesel is clearly marked.

Any specific advice for driving in the Troodos Mountains?

Drive slowly and carefully, especially on hairpin bends. Use a lower gear for steep descents to save your brakes. Be aware of the potential for rockfalls after rain, and in winter (Jan-Feb), some roads may require snow chains or be closed entirely.

Can you explain the basic rental insurance acronyms: CDW, TP, SCDW?

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): This is NOT full insurance. It limits your financial liability for damage to the rental car to a certain amount, known as the 'excess.' TP (Theft Protection): Limits your liability to the excess amount if the car is stolen. SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver): An optional, extra-cost insurance (usually sold at the desk) that reduces your excess to a very small amount, or even zero.

So, do I really need extra insurance on top of the basic package?

It is highly recommended. Without it, you are liable for an excess that can be over €1500 if you have an accident. You can either buy the expensive SCDW from the rental company or, more economically, purchase a full protection policy beforehand from a third-party like QEEQ. This gives you peace of mind.

What is the exact procedure if I have an accident?

1. Stop safely. Turn on your hazard lights. 2. Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call the pan-European emergency number: 112. 3. Do not move the vehicles unless they pose a major danger. 4. Call the car rental company immediately. Their number will be on your rental agreement and a sticker inside the car. They will guide you. 5. Do not admit fault. 6. Take photos of the scene, the vehicles, and their positions. 7. If another party is involved, exchange details (name, phone, insurance). Wait for the police or the rental company's representative.

What should I do if the car breaks down?

Your rental should include 24/7 breakdown assistance. Find a safe place to pull over, turn on your hazard lights, and call the roadside assistance number provided by the rental company.

What are the main emergency numbers in Cyprus?

The single emergency number for police, ambulance, and fire services is 112. This is the same across the entire EU, so it's easy to remember.

What happens if I get a parking or speeding ticket?

You are responsible for paying it. You can usually pay it at a local municipal office or bank. If you don't pay it, the rental company will be notified by the authorities, pay the fine on your behalf, and then charge your credit card for the fine amount plus a hefty administrative fee.

Does my insurance cover tyres, windscreen, and mirrors?

The basic CDW provided by the rental company almost never covers damage to tyres, windows, mirrors, the undercarriage, or the roof. This is a key reason why purchasing a comprehensive 'full protection' policy (either from the rental desk or a third party like QEEQ) is so valuable, as these policies typically do cover those items.

Can I take my rental car from the Republic of Cyprus (South) to Northern Cyprus?

This is a critical and complex question. Most major rental companies in the South strictly prohibit taking their vehicles across the border. However, some smaller, local companies may permit it. You MUST check the specific policy of your rental company before booking. If you cross in a car from a company that forbids it, all your insurance becomes void.

If my rental company allows crossing, what about insurance?

The insurance provided by your rental company in the South (Republic of Cyprus) is NOT valid in the North. You will be required to purchase a separate, third-party Turkish Cypriot car insurance policy at the border checkpoint. This insurance is basic and only covers the other party, not damage to your rental car.

What is the process at the border checkpoint (e.g., in Nicosia)?

You will need to show your passport and the car's registration documents (which should be in the glove box). You will then go to a small office to purchase the mandatory Northern Cyprus car insurance. You can buy it for a few days, a week, or a month. Payment is usually required in cash (Euros or Turkish Lira).

What happens if I have an accident or the car breaks down in Northern Cyprus?

This is the biggest risk. Your rental company from the South will not provide any roadside assistance or support in the North. You will be entirely on your own to arrange and pay for towing and repairs to get the car back to the border. This can be extremely expensive and complicated.

Given the risks, is it a good idea to drive a rental car to the North?

For most tourists, it is not recommended due to the insurance and breakdown risks. A much safer and easier alternative is to park your rental car in the South (e.g., in Nicosia), walk across the Ledra Street pedestrian crossing, and then either explore North Nicosia on foot or hire a separate car from a Northern Cypriot company for a day if you wish to explore further afield.
