The service was very poor. They lure you with low prices and then forcibly sell you expensive insurance. I initially booked with Mex but canceled after seeing bad reviews and chose Mas instead, thinking a higher rating would mean fewer issues. However, upon arriving at the store, I realized both companies are connected. They found all sorts of faults, claiming my driver's license was new when in fact it was a renewal. After lengthy negotiations with the rental company's customer service, they finally agreed to give me the car but only if I bought their insurance (despite already having full coverage from the platform). They wouldn't listen to the platform's communication either. At that point, I had no choice but to comply. Additionally, they charged an unfavorable exchange rate for the insurance. I advise others to avoid this rental company. Online reviews are overwhelmingly negative, and it's not worth taking the risk; you could be the next person to get ripped off.
They require you to buy insurance, and you can't pick up the car without it. Furthermore, if there are any issues, they make it difficult to dispute. I showed two credit cards, and they deliberately chose the one that had been active for less than a year. When I complained to the car rental platform, MEX Rental Company ignored my complaint citing a credit card discrepancy. So, if you choose MEX Rental Company, you need both courage and luck!
Terrible experience, they are just out to scam you. Never go to MEX again. Long waiting time, requires one year of credit history while other companies don't, plus a $2500 deposit for a lousy car. The deposit alone can buy a car. They're just here to rip you off. Don't rent from this company.
About QEEQ:10.0/10
The rental company is quite formal. Other than not providing the reserved Nissan car, everything was fine, and they didn't push hard on insurance sales. The car return process at 5 AM was also very smooth.
Didn't get the car I wanted. The rental company said it was the same class, but I rented a Toyota SUV overseas and received a Kia instead. It was uncomfortable to drive and sit in. The tire blew out after just 100 kilometers, and there was no signal on the road. I had to pay local people several dozen dollars to change the spare tire. Later, I had to repair the tire in the city, with no receipts provided, making it impossible to claim insurance. The fuel level at pickup was much lower than stated. My husband didn't notice it until we started driving. We were told by the staff at the gate to take a photo as a record. When returning the car, the staff didn't recognize the photo, and we had to pay an extra $14.
They forced me to pay an additional insurance fee of around 1200, and what's worse is they charged my card after I left the store. I contacted the official customer service of the car rental platform, but their English was so weak that they couldn't argue back when the rental company claimed the insurance had already taken effect. The customer service then blamed me, which was really frustrating.
They specifically target Chinese customers! The local company tries to scam you during car handover. The car didn't have an antenna when I picked it up, but they tried to charge me for it when I returned the vehicle. Luckily, I recorded a video during pickup showing no antenna. Their excuse was: because I have your deposit. Thankfully, the domestic customer service later refunded me, which was considerate. The local people were terrible, though.
“Very Negative Experience with MAS - significant and aggressive upselling”
About MEX:4.0/10
Significant and aggressive 'upselling' from the local staff team. The lady said I could not take the car unless I increased my 3rd party liability insurance. We were asked to pay another £300, on an initial booking of £106! Only from speaking separately with Sixt did I get the truth. It took over 2 hours to resolve and get the car. We actually had 37,500 USD of 3rd party insurance, which is the legal minimum, so we ended up taking the car.
About QEEQ:8.0/10
Tries to help resolve the issue, and followed up regularly. They were really good.
Overall, we are satisfied, but the insurance sales pitch took a long time. We repeatedly emphasized that we had already purchased additional insurance, and only then did we get the car.
The Mexican staff member at MAS Car Rental was terrible. She made things difficult just because I'm Asian. First, the shuttle bus stop was hard to find; remember to look for the sign above with 03 after you exit. This might have been my own mistake, so future customers should take note. Then, from the time I showed my booking confirmation to when I finally got the car, she created all possible difficulties. She tried to make me buy full insurance even though I already had it. She wanted proof of third-party liability insurance, which I found out from the rental company's customer service was something they should provide and I don’t need to buy. She claimed my documents were only in Chinese and not in Spanish (which was a lie), so I had to send her the confirmation email on the spot. She said she wouldn't accept my credit card because it was opened in January, and they only accept cards open for more than a year (customer service confirmed this was a lie too). She then took at least 20 minutes to read my bilingual booking and wouldn't let me talk to customer service (thinking I was recording her). Finally, only after I got really angry did she complete the credit card process. Can you imagine it took 1.2 hours? I've driven in over ten countries and didn't expect the worst service to be in Mexico. Future customers should be aware. PS: No problems with police and driving around the Yucatán Peninsula was very easy.
