Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Malaysia renting a car in Spain

Do I really need to rent a car as a Malaysian tourist in Spain?

It depends on your itinerary. If you're mostly staying in big cities like Madrid or Barcelona, public transport is excellent and parking can be a hassle. But if you want to explore countryside villages, coastlines, or remote areas, renting a car offers the most freedom and flexibility.

Can I use my Malaysian driving license to rent a car in Spain?

No. Spanish law requires non-EU visitors to present both their original Malaysian driving license and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Both documents must be shown at the rental counter.

Why do I need an IDP if my Malaysian license has English on it?

The IDP is an official translation recognized by Spanish authorities and rental companies. It helps avoid language misunderstandings with police or during insurance claims. Not having one may invalidate your insurance.

How do I get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Malaysia?

You can apply at any JPJ (Road Transport Department) branch in Malaysia. Bring your valid driving license, MyKad, a passport-sized photo, completed JPJ L1 form, and pay an annual fee (currently RM150). The process is usually same-day.

Is there a minimum age to rent a car in Spain?

Yes. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 and to have held a license for at least one year. Drivers under 25 usually pay a 'young driver surcharge' (€10-€25 per day). For premium cars, the minimum age may be higher.

When should I book my rental car?

Book as early as possible, especially for summer (June–September) and holidays. Booking 1–3 months ahead secures better prices and more vehicle options. Last-minute bookings are more expensive and automatic cars may be sold out.

Which platform should I use to book my rental car?

Use a professional comparison platform like QEEQ. It compares offers from major and local rental companies, has clear pricing, and often provides more affordable third-party insurance options than booking directly at the counter.

Should I choose manual or automatic transmission?

Manual cars are more common and cheaper in Spain, but if you're used to automatics in Malaysia, it's highly recommended to rent an automatic. It makes driving on the right and navigating hills much easier and safer.

What size of vehicle should I rent?

For two people with light luggage, a small/economy car is ideal for city streets and parking. For three or four people or more luggage, opt for a mid-size or estate car. For families or groups, consider an MPV or 7-seater. Keep in mind European cars have smaller trunks than Asian or American models.

Can I drive my rental car from Spain to other countries like Portugal or France?

Yes, but you must inform the rental company in advance. A 'cross-border fee' applies, and extra insurance may be required. If you cross borders without declaring, your insurance becomes void.

What personal information and documents do I need to provide when booking?

Online booking usually requires the main driver's full name (matching passport/license), age, contact info, and a credit card for deposit. Actual documents are checked at pick-up.

Is a child seat mandatory? How do I book one?

Yes, children under 135 cm must use an appropriate seat, usually in the back. You can reserve one during booking, though it comes with an extra fee. For longer trips, buying one locally may be cheaper.

What hidden costs should I watch out for besides the daily rental rate?

Expect additional fees for insurance upgrades, young drivers, extra drivers, one-way drop-offs, cross-border travel, GPS/child seats, airport/train station pick-up, and VAT. Always check the full breakdown before confirming.

What do CDW and TP mean in the rental insurance? Is it enough?

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and TP (Theft Protection) limit your liability for damage or theft to a fixed 'excess' amount. This insurance is basic and usually not enough—it leaves you responsible for a high excess.

What is 'excess' (deductible) in car rental insurance?

The excess is the maximum amount you pay out-of-pocket for damage/theft. For example, if your excess is €1,000 and damage costs €1,500, you pay €1,000 and insurance covers the rest. If damage is €600, you pay the full €600.

How can I avoid paying a high excess? What is 'full insurance'?

'Full insurance' or 'zero excess insurance' covers the excess risk. You can buy it at the rental counter (expensive but hassle-free) or via third-party providers like QEEQ (cheaper, but you pay first and claim later). First-time visitors should strongly consider full coverage.

What is the difference between rental company insurance and QEEQ's third-party insurance?

Rental company insurance is more expensive but you don't have to pay for damages upfront. QEEQ's insurance is cheaper but requires you to pay the excess first and then claim reimbursement, providing you keep all receipts and documents.

Do I need to pay a deposit? How much is it?

Yes, a security deposit is required, frozen on your credit card. Without full insurance, it's usually €800–€2,500. With the rental company's full insurance, it drops to €100–€300. Debit cards and cash are almost never accepted for deposits.

Can I use my Malaysian debit card for the deposit?

No, you need a credit card in the main driver's name with sufficient limit. Rental companies require this to block the deposit. Debit cards or cash are generally not accepted for this purpose.

What is the 'Full to Full' fuel policy, and is it the best option?

'Full to Full' means you pick up and return the car with a full tank. It's the fairest option, as you only pay for what you use. Other policies like 'Full to Empty' let companies charge you for a full tank (often at inflated prices), which is not recommended.

How much does it cost to add an additional driver?

Typically €7–€15 per day, with a maximum cap. All drivers must present their license, IDP, and passport at pick-up. Do not allow unregistered drivers to drive, as this voids insurance.

Are highways in Spain tolled?

Some are. 'Autopistas' (AP-xx) are tolled and high quality; 'Autovías' (A-xx) are free but busier. You can set your GPS to avoid tolls, but it may increase travel time.

Is there an extra cost for one-way rentals?

Yes, a 'one-way fee' applies if you drop the car at a different location, ranging from tens to over a hundred euros depending on distance.

Do I pay the full amount upfront when booking with QEEQ?

It depends. Some bookings require a small deposit with the rest paid at pick-up, while others are fully prepaid. Insurance and deposit are handled separately at the counter.

Where are rental car counters located at Spanish airports?

Most major brands have counters inside the terminal. Some budget companies operate off-airport and provide a free shuttle bus. Always check your booking instructions for details.

What documents do I need to present at the rental counter?

You must show your passport, Malaysian driving license, IDP, credit card in the main driver's name, and your booking confirmation. Additional drivers need the same documents.

If the desk staff push me to buy their expensive insurance but I already bought QEEQ insurance, what should I do?

Politely but firmly decline: 'Thank you, but I already have full coverage from a third party. I'm aware there will be a higher deposit, and that's fine.' They may warn you about third-party claims, but you can insist on your choice.

What should I check before driving away with the rental car?

Thoroughly inspect the car for scratches, dents, or damage. Make sure all are noted on the contract. Take photos and videos of the car from all angles, including the interior and equipment. This is crucial evidence if you face damage claims later.

How do I know if my car uses petrol or diesel?

Never guess! Ask the counter staff, check your contract, look for labels inside the fuel cap ('Gasolina' for petrol, 'Diésel' or 'Gasóleo' for diesel), or check the key tag. Diesel cars are common in Spain.

What if my flight is delayed and I miss my scheduled pick-up?

Inform the rental company or QEEQ's customer service as soon as possible. Most companies hold your car for 1–2 hours after the scheduled time, but late arrivals may result in cancellation and loss of your booking if not notified.

How do I change the GPS language to English?

Most cars have multilingual GPS or infotainment systems. Ask staff to set it to English, or navigate to 'Settings > Language' in the system yourself.

What is 'Siesta' and will it affect car pick-up?

Siesta is Spain's afternoon break (around 2–5 pm). Airport and major city counters are usually open all day, but small city branches may close during siesta. Always check opening hours before booking.

I'm used to driving on the left in Malaysia. Any tips for adapting to right-hand driving in Spain?

Remember: 'Driver in the middle, passenger on the curb.' Follow other cars, drive slowly at first, and consider renting an automatic. Ask your passenger to help check the right side, especially at roundabouts and turns.

How do I navigate roundabouts in Spain?

Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout (from your left). Stay in the outer lane if you're exiting soon, use the inner lane only for later exits (but move to the outer lane before exiting). Always signal right before leaving the roundabout.

What are the speed limits in Spain, and are fines strict?

Speed limits: highways 120 km/h, conventional roads 90 km/h, cities 50 km/h (some streets 30 km/h). Fines for speeding are heavy (€100–€600) and can include license suspension. Speed cameras are common.

What do blue, green, and white lines mean for parking?

Blue zones (Zona Azul): paid parking, pay at the meter, display ticket. Green zones: residents' parking, more expensive for non-residents and with time limits. White zones: free parking (rare in city centers). Yellow lines or 'Prohibido Estacionar': no parking.

What should I do if I'm involved in a traffic accident?

Ensure safety, turn on hazard lights, wear the reflective vest, and place warning triangles. Call 112 if anyone is injured. For minor accidents, fill in the European Accident Statement (found in your rental documents), take photos, and notify the rental company.

What if I'm stopped by the police?

Pull over safely, keep your hands visible, and present your passport, Malaysian license, IDP, and rental documents when asked. Be polite and comply. On-the-spot fines can be discounted if paid immediately.

Can I use my phone while driving?

No. Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal and fined €200. Use hands-free or a fixed mount for navigation.

What is a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) and can I drive there?

Major cities like Madrid and Barcelona have these zones. Only cars with special eco-stickers can enter. Most rental cars meet standards, but rules change often. It's safest to park outside the city and use public transport.

Are petrol stations self-service? How do I pay?

Most are self-service. Park, remember your pump number, pay inside the shop (state the pump number and amount or say 'full tank'), pump your fuel, and pay by credit card or cash.

What is the drink-driving limit in Spain?

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5g/l (0.3g/l for drivers with less than two years' experience). Penalties are severe. The best advice: if you drive, don't drink.

Are there any traffic signs I should pay special attention to?

Yes. STOP signs require a full stop. Yield triangles mean give way. Blue circles with white arrows indicate mandatory directions. Red circles with a white background mean no entry. Learn these before driving.

Is it safe to drive on rural roads at night?

Rural roads can be narrow, winding, and unlit. Drive slower, use high beams when appropriate, and watch for animals. If you're unfamiliar with the area, avoid long night drives.

How do I find the car rental return location at the airport?

Follow signs for 'Car Rental Return' or 'Alquiler de Coches – Devolución' as you approach the airport. The route is well marked and usually includes company logos. Check Google Maps for extra assurance.

What is the process for returning the car? What should I do?

Refuel if on a full-to-full policy, clean out your belongings, wait for staff to inspect the car, and ask them to confirm on your paperwork that there’s no new damage. Get a final receipt as proof of return.

What if I return the car outside business hours?

Most companies offer a key drop box. Park in the designated area, take extensive photos/videos of the car (including fuel and odometer readings), and drop the keys in the box. This is your evidence in case of later damage claims.

When will my deposit be refunded?

Refunds are not instant. After confirming no damage or fines, the company releases the hold within 7–15 business days. If it takes longer than a month, contact your card issuer and then the rental company or QEEQ support.

Why do I see unexpected charges from the rental company on my credit card after returning to Malaysia?

These are usually for traffic fines (with an admin fee) or post-return damage claims. This is why it’s vital to document the car’s condition when returning.

If I receive a traffic fine mailed to Malaysia, do I need to pay it?

Yes, it’s recommended. Unpaid fines can affect future Schengen visa applications or entry. The fine notice usually includes instructions and a website for online payment. Disputes are possible, but often require Spanish.
