The staff at the car rental company were positive and enthusiastic. Due to language barriers, the employee even used the phone to have another Chinese-speaking colleague assist with the communication. The only regret is that after completing the paperwork, I found a different car (a downgraded model) at the pickup location on the 7th floor. I have lodged a complaint with the rental company and provided all relevant documents via email.
I booked a Grand Cherokee, but when I arrived, they said they didn't have any. They offered me a vehicle of the same class instead. First, they gave me a Hyundai, which I found too small. Then, they offered me a silver Dodge, which was incredibly ugly. They also showed me a Kia, but I couldn't even name the specific model. The space was small, and it didn't look good at all. I chose the Grand Cherokee because it's a 4-wheel drive and I had a lot of luggage, including a long snowboard, which required a spacious vehicle. The Grand Cherokee was perfect for these needs and looked classy. But they just dismissed me with 'We don't have a Cherokee right now'. It was raining outside, and my wife and kids were waiting, so I had no choice but to take the Dodge, which was a commercial vehicle. I don't understand how an off-road vehicle and a commercial vehicle can be considered the same class. One costs around 60-70k, and the other 20-30k, yet they're deemed the same class? As expected, it was a disappointing experience. The front wheel got stuck in a small roadside ditch and took a long time to get out. For a novice, it could have been disastrous, especially with no phone signal. I hope they improve their service and credibility.
I have rented cars abroad dozens of times, but this was my first time with Dollar and it was a terrible experience.
1. This was my second time driving on Highway 1, and I specifically rented a classic American Mustang convertible. When I arrived at the store, they told me there were no cars available. One staff member said the same car model was oversold by six, so basically, I couldn't get it. They offered me an upgrade but wanted to charge me an extra $160. WTF?
2. I reluctantly decided to take a Fusion, but then there was another problem. My credit card authorization for the deposit failed. Neither my wife nor I could use three different credit cards successfully. (Later, another staff member retried, but it still failed). So, I had to call my friend in California to use his license and ID to rent the car, which took another half hour.
3. After getting back in line and waiting for my friend to redo the process, the second staff member finally gave me a free upgrade to a Jaguar XE. However, the whole process took an hour and a half, causing us to miss the most important scenic spot, Big Sur (we planned to catch the sunset there), which was the biggest regret of this trip.
Overall, Dollar has a car shortage and oversells, has slow service, rude staff, and their credit card machines inexplicably fail (I must note that this was the only company where my credit card had issues during my entire US trip, everything else went smoothly). This affected our trip, and the experience was horrible!
Great experience. Picking up and returning the car was very convenient. I thought returning the car would be troublesome, so I arrived at the airport quite early, but it only took about 5 minutes to finish the process. Highly recommended.
Like: Nice clean car with an option of two colors. My first time driving a hybrid car. Wasn’t comfortable at first, but I took some extra time to review all the buttons, dials and mirrors. Overall, I felt it was a good car and easy to drive.
Super convenient, both picking up and dropping off the car were very quick. The car was ready when we arrived, so we got it immediately; returning the car was just as simple, handing over the keys took less than a minute. I opted for the prepaid fuel option, only to later realize that any leftover fuel wouldn't be refunded. So, if you don't mind the hassle, it's better to pick up and return the car with a full tank, rather than prepaying for fuel.
