We provided the international driving license certification arranged by the car rental service, the white booklet one, but they still told us we didn't have any certification. It took an hour. Just arrived from Auckland to Christchurch, and the international companies didn't need any of that.
The staff were lovely and even offered us an umbrella to keep in the car as rain was forecast.
The Mercedes car we booked was involved in an accident a couple of days before we arrived but we were notified in advance and adequate replacement was provided with fuel included. It was refreshing not to deal with the big corporate rental companies.
